To New Project
Two refinery engineers.
Mr. A. A. (Ali Britten of
Mechanical-Engineering and
Mr. A. (Alex H. Hoo of
Technical-Process Engineer-
ing, have been promoted to
the newly created position of
Project Engineer effective
November 1, 1969.
This position recognizes en-
gineers who have demon-
strated they can fully and
independently plan, organize
and execute complex projects.
Project engineers can, with
only a minimum of super-
vision, define, schedule and
execute their work within the
time and budget allotted.
Their assignments can cover
such broad and diversified
areas as solving plant oper-
ating or maintenance prob-
lems, designing new facilities,
executing projects and head-
ing task forces to study
special plant problems.
Al started with Lago as
an LVS student in 1952. As
a Lago scholarship .student,
he attended the Marianapolis
Prep School in 1957. In 1962

he graduated from the Cath-
olic University of America,
Washington, D.C., earning a
B.S. degree in mechanical en-
gineering, specializing in
thermodynamics.
At Lago Al worked, among
others, as project engineer
for the new compressor (Ge-
mini) at GAR-1, charged
with coordinating contractor
engineering, procurement and
construction. He has also been
coordinator for engineering
and contracting work on the
PCAR revamp job in Feb-

Maintenance Coordinator Nov. 1st


Juan C. Hermans of Proc-
ess-Refining, has been prom-
oted to maintenance coordina-
tor in Acid & Edeleanu ef-
fective November 1. He will
continue acting as process
foreman for an indefinite
period.
Juan started at Lago as a
mechanical apprentice "D"
in the Lago Vocational School
in 1945. Following his grad-
uation in 1950, he worked in
the Acid & Edeleanu Plant
as process helper "A". He
advanced to controlman in
1954.

After leaving Aruba in 1962 for service in Europe and the Middle East, a somewhat dif-
ferent "Esso Aruba" visited Aruba Nov. 14. The 47,446 deadweight ton tanker now dis-
plays a bulbous bow and has a black coating above water line instead of its original silver
band. Her captain now is N. Olivari. She will probably make a couple of crude hauls
from Maracaibo to Aruba before taking on new assignments..

In 1957 Juan was promot-
ed to assistant operator. A
subsequent promotion made
him operator in January,
1965. Two years later he
progressed to shift foreman,
the position he held at the
time of his November 1
promotion.
With over 24 years' exper-
ience in the Acid, Edeleanu,
Sulphur and Acid Treating
Plants, Juan followed a 13-
week process training course,
a Middle Distillate Upgrade
course and a Gas Testing
course at Lago. On his own,
he completed correspondence

C.C. Lieffers Named Administrator

Of Industrial Services Division


Effective November 1, 1969
Clinton C. Lieffers was nam-
ed administrator of the new-
ly formed Industrial Services
Division. Its responsibilities
include the supervision of the
Lago Police and Fire Sec-
tions. The division reports
directly to the president and
vice president.
Mr. Lieffers, who has ex-
tensive experience in plant
and camp security, fire pro-
tection and emergency con-
trol programs, transferred
from Creole's Eastern Division
where he had been Industrial
Services Group Head of the
Quiriquire production, oper-
ation.
A graduate from the Uni-
versity of Southern California
with a B.S. degree in geology,
Mr. Lieffers started with
Creole as a geologist on Dec-
ember 26, 1948. After three
years of exploration work in
the Venezuelan jungle, Mr.
Lieffers was assigned to the
production areas in both the
Eastern and Western Divi-
sions from 1952 to 1960.


In 1960, he transferred to
the Industrial Services De-
partment. and began his new
work in the WXVesrn Division

as protection supervisor. He
was named Industrial Services
group head in Amuay in 1965,
and transferred to the East-
ern Division in 1967 in the
same capacity.
A resident of Venezuela for
nearly 21 years, Mr. Lieffers
is very conversant in Span-
ish. His hobbies include sail-
ing, fishing, skin diving, 'ama-
teur radio and cooking.

ation seminar.
Al, who had been a senior
engineer since October 1,
1967, is on the Committee on


Safe Operations (COSO).
Alex was first employed in
the Executive Dept. -in Sep-
tember, 1956. With a Lago
Scholarship, he earned a B.S.
degree in chemical engineer-
ing from the Illinois Institute
of Technology. He was as-
signed as an engineer in
Tech.-Process in July 1962.
In Call, Colombia, Alex at-
tended a process design
course and at Lago an auto-
matic process control course,
the ODL program, Effective
Management and Fortran
program.
Alex has been contact en-
gineer on several refinery
units. From September 1966
to September 1967 he work-

Anibal RasmUn was or-
iginally employed as mes-
senger at Lago. In 1940
he worked in the former
Accounting Department as
an office boy and later as
an apprentice typist. He
was transferred to the
Laboratories in 1941 as a
sample boy and progress-
ed to Tester G in 1942.
Mr. Rasmijn later trans-
ferred to the L.OF. De-
partment as process helper
"D", progressing to Trea-
ter in 1947.
An assistant operator
since 1965, he completed
30 years of service Nov-
ember 5.

Esyldro Koolman of
Process-Oil Movements be-
gan his Lago employment
as office messenger in the
Marine Department, where
he advanced to disburse-
ment clerk in 1946.
Mr. Koolman became
section head Invoices in
1951. A year later he was
promoted to shift dis-
patcher. A 1956 promotion
give him the title of signal
tower operator.

Ignacio Wernet


Ignacio Wernet began
in the Mechanical Depart-
ment as mechanical ap-
prentice "A" in the Mach-
inist Section. In 1940 he

"A" in 1945.
Mr. Wernet worked in
the various garage mech-
anic categories from 1951
to 1962. He became crane

Ismael Croes began as
an office boy in the Mar-
ine Office in 1936. In
1942 he transferred to the
Process Department -
Pressure Stills where he
started as process helper
and advanced to houseman
in 1942. Following a short
break in service due to
resignation, he was re-
employed in the Esso Club.
He transferred to the
Accounting Department,
in 1948 as an apprentice
clerk, advancing to utility
clerk II in 1957.
Mr. Croes, who is a
cable clerk in Comptrol-
ler's Office Services
since 1960, celebrated his
service anniversary Nov-
ember 19.

as messenger 30 years ago.
He subsequently worked
as mechanical apprentice,
senior apprentice and lab-
orer in the Mechanical
Department up to Novem-
ber 1943 when he joined

transferred to Process -
Receiving & Shipping as
process helper "D", work-
ing his way up to pumper.
In 1961 he was promoted

position he still holds.

vision and the Supply Division.
The Terminal Division, com-
prising the Fuel & Docks, Ma-
rine and Control Center Pro-
ject areas of activity, is under
Division Superintendent James
R. Buchanan.
The Supply Division, with
August Genser as Division
Superintendent, includes Oper-
ations Coordination and the
Crude & Light Oils areas of
activity.
Mr. Buchanan is a chemical
engineer who transferred from

which time he transferred to
Caracas.
Mr. Genser, who started with
Lago in 1961 in the Laborato-
ries, has a BS degree in chem-
istry from Loyola University.
He was promoted to operations
coordinator in Process-Oil Mo-
vements on August 1, 1969.
