ed 209 rooms to Aruba's grow-
ing tourist industry. These new
rooms belong to the beautiful
Holiday Inn of Aruba, the
third luxury hotel to adorn the
skyline of Aruba's Palm
Beach.
Over 600 invited guests cele-
brated the opening afterwards
in a.cocktail party hosted by
directors A. Jesurun, B. Jesu-
run and M. Vlietman of Aruba
Real Estate, N.V., owner of the

000,000, the Holiday Inn boasts
several "firsts", in the local ho-
tel business. Constructed in a
record 12month period, Octo-
ber 28, 1968 October 22,
1969, the Holiday Inn is the
first privately financed luxury
hotel and the first on the is-
land with a TV set in each
room and an ice cube machine
on each of its seven floors. For
those guests who wish to do
their own laundry, there is a
self-service laundromat on the
seventh floor.

long and 25 feet wide shopping

It Can Happen,

Anywhere, Anytime. .
When you work in a refinery and you discuss safety, people
usually have the tendency to think of safety in the field, on
the units or in the Laboratories. People working in these areas
are provided with protective equipment, such as safety hats,
shoes, goggles, coveralls, gloves, etc. They are required, how-
ever, to use their common sense and to be safety conscious in
order to prevent injury to themselves, to others or damage to
equipment in the refinery.
In a place where overhead equipment pipelines or cranes
loom over the employee, one can certainly see the need for ex-
tra safety precaution. But what about the office employee ?
Although the tools or equipment used cannot be compared
with the ones within the refinery, the office employee is also
subject to accidents. Accidents, which can be serious and
which can result in infections.
The office worker is not provided with safety gloves, cover-
alls, etc. Besides being a nuisance, these safety tools can
sometimes even add to an accident. Therefore, an office em-
ployee should rely on his or her common sense, alertness and
safety consciousness.
An ordinary pencil or rubber band lying on the floor can
cause a bad fall resulting in a broken leg or spinal injury. A
pencil point may pierce a finger.
Shortcuts, passing too close to an open file cabinet, waste
paper basket or telephone cord can cause serious injury.
When using the stairs, always step on the rubber mats to
avoid slipping. When reaching for books or file folders on a
high shelf, use an adequate ladder. Don't overreach !
And, don't you forget, paper can cut delicate hands !

A Flat Tire Is Something Common,

But Have You Seen a "Flat" Pipe?


In a large oil refinery with
a maze of piping in various
sizes and shapes and operating
under different pressures, a
common occurrence may be
leaking lines. But a collapsed
pipe line, 44-inch in diameter,
flattened by the impact of ex-
ternal forces is certainly an
unusual sight. Such an inci-
dent has occurred at Lago and
at other places where large
diameter, thin wall (0.25 inch)
pipe lines have been installed.
The incident occurred at La-
go in a 44-inch line used to
load a ship with a cargo of
fuel oil. The pump being used
was started without first open-
ing the suction valve of the
product tank. The thin wall
pipe can withstand an internal
pressure reduction to about
11.2 pounds per square inch
absolute (PSIA). Although the
pump has a safety feature to
kick off when the pressure
reaches 11.7 PSIA, the pump
continues to run for some time
before it comes to a com-
plete halt. This caused the
pressure inside the pipe to
drop to about 3.8 PSIA, which
is lower than the atmospheric
pressure on the outside of the

line. The effect was like suck-
ing the air out of a thin elastic
tube. The result was a col-
lapsed line, flattened over a
length of about 160 feet.
To prevent future incident of
this type which result in large
diameter pipe lines getting a
"flat", a simple low cost de-
vice called a vacuum breaker
has been installed. The device
is an 8-inch diameter open
standpipe which is tied into
the suction line between a
valve and the pump. In the
event of situations such as
have occurred, free air will
flow in the affected pipe to
maintain the internal line pres-
sure. The standpipe runs to the
nearest tank and rises over the
top of the tank to take care
of possible back flow.
Several of these vacuum
breakers have already been in-
stalled on the various large
diameter, thin wall suction
lines throughout the refinery.
The vacuum breakers have
been designed by Francisco
Kock of Technical-Process En-
gineering and installed under
the supervision of job leaders

In addition, the new Holiday
Inn is home of Aruba's third
casino, the largest and most

mentioned plans for additional
Holiday Inn hotels in St. Maar-
ten and Bonaire. "With one ho-
tel on each island, it will be
possible to offer package tours
to the Antilles", he remarked.

Most Traffic Problems and Signs

Date Back to the Ancient Times


The traffic odds are probab-
ly not equally divided between
men and women drivers. .But
it was as early as in 396 B.C.
that women were first given
the reins literally. A Ro-
man legislator by the name of
Camillius, probably to snare
the female vote,, sponsored the
Law of Camillius which gave
Roman lasses the right to
drive their conveyances
through the streets of Rome.
Early on the first day the
new law was in effect a Ro-
man clotheshorse had his
brand new toga nipped by a
woman driver who cut a cor-
ner too close with her chariot.

Too Many Cars?

Even Julius Caesar had
trouble with traffic in his days.
And he took drastic action to
remedy it. History does not re-
veal whether Caesar got hung
up in a traffic jam and was
late for a date with Cleopatra.
It does tell us that, upset about
the traffic situation, he issued
an order prohibiting the pass-
age of wagons through the
central district of Rome for 10
hours after sunrise.

Traffic Signs ?

These signs started back
about 3000 B.C. Inscribed sto-
nes marked the trade routes
across Persia, Arabia and Af.
ghanistan. The Phoenicians
used basalt obelisks for the
same purpose. And when the
Romans built their magnificent
50,000-mile network of paved
roads linking the empire, stone
arrows inset in the road guid-
ed the charioteer to his desti-
nation. Other signs warned him
of driving restrictions and
detours, no doubt.


Speed Limits?

In the year 1802 Richard
Trevithick was tooling along
a road near London, England,
at the frightful speed of 10
miles an hour.

He lost control of his vehicle
and banged into a fence, clip-
ping off several pales. It was
auto accident No. 1.

For a while it was the only
one. Citizens of London were
so alarmed that city officials
called an emergency meeting
and decreed that no such pesky
machine could run at large in
the future.
Even as late as 1896 England
had a law prohibiting any po-
wer-propelled vehicle from tra-
veling over the highway at a
speed of more than four miles
an hour. The law also requir-
ed that a man had to walk in
front of it carrying a red flag.

Science Fair Committee 1970 Meets

With Schoolteachers and the Press


The Lago Science Fair Com-
mittee held two separate meet-
ings recently, one with fifteen
school representatives and the
other with members of the
press, radio and TV. Both were
held at the Coral Strand Hotel.

The highlights discussed
were: several alternatives for
encouraging participation and
increasing the quality of the
students' projects; a newly
adopted system to assist stu-
dents with technical advice,
and publicity.

The publicity campaign will
include radio spots, TV chats,
press news and posters.

The schools were represent-

At the press conference Com-
mittee Chairman Alex Hoo
made a special appeal to those
present: "We believe that if
our press people pay periodic
visits to the schools to inter-
view the participating students
about the progress of their
projects, greater interest will
be generated among those not
participating when they read
or hear about the work of
others for the fair," he said.

on a particular project may
