The Tank Farm area, pre-
viously known as the Spheroid
Field, is being cleared for the
construction of six tanks. These
new tanks form part of the
HDS Project's Seasonal Stor-
age tankage which calls for a
total of fourteen tanks, thir-
teen of 400,000 barrel capacity
and one 80,000 barrel tank.
Although work on four tank
foundations at the Snowpile
area has already begun, involv-
ing site pre-loading work by
local contractor Johnson's En-

For Best Suggestion Since 1953


Simeon Farro, an operator
in Process-Oil Movements, was
presented with a CYI award
of Fls. 3,285 at a special CYI
dinner at the Coral Strand Ho-
tel on September 12, 1969.
Four other CYI winners also
received awards at this dinner,
totalling Fls. 1,750.
The presentations were made
by Vice-President LeRoy John-
ston.
Simeon's idea called for the
conversion of the suction late-
ral of Tank No. 352 into an
aviation gasoline leading hea-
der after dismantling the tank.
Implementation of the idea
produced savings in ships'
delays, overtime and circula-
tion time to bring the tetra
ethyl lead in solution thereby
releasing pumps and lines for
loading. Total annual savings
amount to Fls. 21,885.
Frits Maduro, operator in
Process-Refining, won Fis. 510
for his idea to install a 3-inch
line after the olefin feed pres-


sure central valve to existing
valve on No. 10 line to stora-
ge at AAR-2. Adoption of this
idea eliminated overheating
of pumps, the problem of me-
chanical seal blowout and the
problem of stopping olefin feed
to reactors. Estimated annual
savings, Fls. 3,400.
An award of FIs. 310 was
presented to Esyldro Koolman,
shift supervisor.in Process-Oil
Movements, for his suggestion
to install at Tank No. 360 two
short tie-in lines to the lower
level lines. The purpose of
this idea, estimated to save
Fls. 2,400 annually, is to main-
tain a better suction and load-
ing rate, because of the lower
level and shorter lines.
Seven hundred and fifty
guilders went to Eusebio Kool-
man, a Tradesman "A" in Me-
chanical-Oil Movements Zone,
for his CYI to install a 1-inch
air balancing line from the
air main inlet on oil pumps

paration due to coral rock for-
mation which had to be remov-
ed and leveled.
Almost every other day
since September 8, coral rock
has been blasted with the use
of explosives. In carrying out
this job, blasting mats are
used as a safety precaution.
These mats, made of heavy
steel cables, measure 15 by

Eusebio Koolman of Me-
chanical-Equipment Section
started at Lago as Mecha-
nical Apprentice "D" in the
Dry Dock area. In 1943 he
advanced to Trade Appren-
tice "A". Later that year
he joined the military ser-
vice, returning to Lago in
1946.
Mr. Koolman advanced
to Machinist "B" in the
Shipyard in 1951. In 1954
he worked briefly in Me-
chanical Machinist.

ence Schools in 1965, Calvin R.
Assang of Technical-Process
Engineering was the first to
complete the course recently.
He was presented with the
ICS certificate by J. R. Beis-
sel, Division Supt. of Technical


Process Engineering.
An engineering technician in
the Crude Processing & Light
Ends Section, Calvin dedicated
eight to ten hours a week to
the course. He did very well in
his study, achieving 51 A's
and 3 B's. He completed the 4-
year program in 3% years.

record stating : "During the
first eight months of 1968, 63
ideas were adopted with
awards totalling Fls. 5,010. In
1969 during the same pe-
riod, 125 were adopted earning
Fls. 11,585 in awards. Both
ideas and awards doubled and
this is truly a remarkable
accomplishment on the part of
our employees".

The highest award ever paid
out under the CYI Plan since
its start in 1934 amounted to
Fls. 5000. It went to C. R.
Bond, a former employee in.

The idea of a brass band be-
gan in 1964, when a group of
Y.M.C.A. members, most of
them amateur musicians, un-
dertook this worthwhile endea-
your. The Y.M.C.A., an organi-
zation devoted to the develop-
ment of both adult and youth
activities, gave them full sup-
port.
Some of the band members
owned their own musical in-
struments. But, more was need-
ded. The idea was not only to
have a band for those who al-
ready could play, but also to
encourage the island's youth
to study music and eventually
perform in the band.
Help came from the Lago
Community Council and Lago
Public Relations which donat-
ed an array of instruments to
the new band.
Under the leadership of Ar-
nold Beyde, the band flourish-
ed over the years expanding in

print reading began recently
for 23 men in Mechanical-
Equipment Section. Offered on
a voluntary basis, the Interna-
tional Correspondence School
course falls under the Educa-
tional Refund Plan. Under this

plete the course. Instructor is
Narcisio Krozendfjk.
Subjects covered include
arithmetic, the different phases
of electricity, and schematic
diagrams. Course duration will
be about one year.
The men meet twice a
week for one hour to discuss
problems, but most of the work
is done at home. Class discus-
sions are tailored to meet in-
dividual needs and each indivi-
dual therefore sets his own
pace. Mr. Krozendik who
leads the discussion says that

All the 23 men have had the
basic electricity course and ac-
cording to Mr. Krozendgk the
present course should stand
them in good stead if they at-
tempt advanced studies.
"This course should be a
real boost for the tradesmen
on the job," Mr. Krozendgk
believes, "because the trend is
toward more intricate electri-
cal equipment and understan-
ding of the blueprints is im-
perative to properly service the
equipment."
Instructor Krozendik, a de-
dicated student himself, brings
to his training assignment an
appreciation of the challenge
and problems of correspond-
ence study: he has completed
correspondence courses in elec-
tric motor repair and electro-
nics. He also has a VEV and
Related Electricity diploma.

Red Brick Smokestack Comes Down

As Last Remnant of Early Days


A giant landmark will dis-
appear from the Lago sky-
line this week when the
smokestack of the former Hy-
dro Plant Reformer Furnace
is torn down.
The smokestack went out of
service when the Hydro Plant
was dismantled around 1946.
But it continued to serve as a
support for the HsS flare, a
pilot burner, and as a lightning
rod.
Repairs on the flare have
become excessive and uneco-
nomical recently and it was de-
cided to dismantle it.
So the Hydro Plant stack
had outlived its usefulness and
had to be demolished.
Moreover, the proximity of
the central control house to
the flare made it desirable to
do away with flare and thus


the smokestacks.
HsS flaring is now handled
by the AAR-2 and Sulphur
Plant flares.
Few employees remember
when the 130-foot stack (with
a 6-foot diameter at the base)
was built. Some long-service
men who were asked about the
stack answered: "The stack
was there before I came to
Lago". But estimates of the
stack's age range from 30 to
35 years.
Bricks from the Hydro
Plant stack will be salvaged
and used as filling material.
Chances are that the red bricks
from this stack will find their
way into foundations of future
projects that will continue to
change the Lago skyline. This
would be a most fitting resting
place for the parts of a dur-

ing performed by three drilling
and blasting specialists of the
firm of McAlinden Construe-
tion Company of Hopewell,
New Jersey. McAlinden is a
subcontractor to the prime con-
tractor, Ralph M. Parsons
Company, and has performed
previous controlled explosive
demolition work in the refinery
for the Royal Netherlands
Harbour Works and Lago.
Following site preparation,
the construction of tank pads
will be carried out by Aru-
baanse Wegenbouw N.V. Sub-
sequent to all this Chicago
Bridge & Iron Company will
move in to erect the 14 tanks.
The tanks will be used for
storage of Seasonal Fuel, In-
termediate Products and Blen-
ding Components, with a total
combined capacity of 5,280,000
barrels.
The HDS Tankage Project,
built at a cost of approximate-
ly Fla. 10,000,000, is scheduled
for completion in August of
next year.
Presently in progress is an-
other blasting job involving the
demolition of old foundations
at the former Rerun Stills
north of Powerhouse No. 1 to
clear the area for the new Hy-
drogen Plants.

The Eso Bunkering facili-
ties at the Oranjestad Harbor
will soon grow by one tank.

Construction on a new 80,000-
barrel tank measuring 120 feet
in diameter and 40 feet high
will begin at year's end. The
tank will add more flexibility
to the Oranjestad Bunkering
Terminal.

Besides enlarging invento-
ries, the tank will enable Easo
to offer another grade of fuel
for bunkering ships.

The five existing tanks in
Oranjestad contain gas oil, die-
sel oil, and low vanadium fuel
oil.
