over as Lago's Technical Ma-
nager effective August 10,
1969. He succeeds E. J. Hig-
gins, who held the position
since May 1, 1966. Mr. Higgins
rejoined Esso Research & En-
gineering Co.
Originally employed with
Esso Research & Engineering
Company, Florham Park, New
Jersey, on December 17, 1956,
Mr. Mowell had previously
been with Lago on a special
assignment from October, 1962
till September, 1963. He work-
ed then in the Technical-Pro-
cess Engineering and Econom-
ics & Planning Divisions.
A graduate in mechanical en-
gineering from Clarkson Colle-
ge of Technology in Potsdam,
New York, Mr. Mowell has


offsite functions.
Mr. Mowell has worked on
the process design of a large
number of projects while at
Esso Engineering. These in-
clude many refinery and che-
mical projects for Jersey re-
fineries throughout the world.

Mowell was also the ERE
startup leader for the Esso
Pappas complex in Thessalo-
niki, Greece. This ambitious
project includes a refinery, am-


monia plant, ethylene plant,
caustic-chlorine plant and po-
ly-vinyl-chloride polymerization
plant.
Married, Mr.-Mowell has two
sons (ages 10 and 7) and one
daughter (age 3). His hobbies
include woodworking, bowling
and boating. He also enjoys
hiking and camping.


On the eastern part of the hydrodesulfurization complex
site, work is in progress on the foundations for temporary
office and warehouse space.

VTR Equipment Gives New Dimension

To Lago's TraininglCommunications


Lago's newest training and
communication medium is the
Video-Tape Recorder (VTR).
To keep up with modern trends
in the use of training and com-
munications equipment in in-
dustry, Lago introduced the
VTR in July, 1967.
By means of a TV camera
and microphones, the video-
tape recorder captures moving
pictures and sound simulta-
neously and records both on
either a two-inch or one-inch
magnetic tape much as a con-
ventional audio-tape recorder
records sound. The big differ-
ence from movie films is that
with the VTR the tape can be
played bac k immediately
through a TV set without any
processing. A very flexible
system, video-tape recordings
can be easily edited and up-
dated by changing the sound
and/or picture information on
the tape. The tape can be eras-
ed and re-used.
The VTR equipment at Lago
originally consisted of two 2-
inch tape video-audio record-
ers, a control unit called Min-
con, four small 5-inch screen
TV monitors, two 19-inch
screen TV monitors, a large
25-inch screen TV monitor and
two TV cameras. One of the
cameras has a zoom lens, the
other has a fixed lens. The
equipment, which is also mo-
bile, is installed in a special
TV control room (G.O.B. Room
172), with a TV studio in G.O.
B. Room 174.


Recently, one of the two-inch
video recorders was replaced
by a newer model, the AMPEX
VR-7800, which uses the more
standard, one-inch tape for in-
dustrial and broadcasting use.
The new machine has much
more flexibility which permits
exchange of tapes among affi-
liates, is less expensive to ope-
rate, can be used on both 50
and 60 cycle electrical systems
and also has capability of re-
cording in color.
For training purposes, the
video-tape recorder has been
used for several training pro-
grams, including contract,
work permits, safety, instru-
ment, mechanical and electro-
nic training. These training
sessions can be given either in
the studio or at a job site.
Lago, the first on the island
and in the Caribbean (except
for Puerto Rico) with this new
video-tape equipment, has also
assisted in covering several im-
portant events, such as royal
visits, fishing tournaments, car-
nival and other special events
The recordings were then
transmitted over Tele-Aruba.
As a direct communications
medium with employees, Lago's
video-tape equipment has been
used by top management in
conveying special messages to
its employees.
In charge of the video-tape
facilities of PR/IR-Training is
Jerry Francis. He has a spe-
cial video-tape van equipped

Lago's Skyscrapers Are Provided

With a New "Coat" after 5 Years


Every five years, two of La-
go's highest structures, the
concrete smokestacks of Pow-
erhouses No. 1 and 2, get a
new "coat".
Recently, Chimney Repair
Foreman Willie E. Ford of
Custodis Construction Co. of
Bound Brook, New Jersey, and
his two experienced Chimney
Repair Topmen Wilbert L. Og-
lesby and Carl Lackey com-
pleted the repair and paint job
on Powerhouse No. 1 smoke-
stack. This stack is 303 feet
high and 15 feet in diameter
at its base.
Subsequently, the Custodis
"steeple jacks" tackled the
smokestack of Powerhouse No.
2, the refinery's highest struc-
ture rising 309 feet high.
Before applying two coat-
ings of a special paint called
"Cecodure" heavy body chim-
ney coating cement, the three
Custodis "steeple chasers" had
to inspect, chip, scrape and
patch or gunnite any "infect-
ed" part of the stack. Some
200 gallons of paint were used
on each stack.
The men plan to finish the
work on the two stacks in
four months.
The Custodis experts, who
have thorough knowledge of
masonry construction, rigging,
demolition techniques and the
ability to work at extreme
heights, install their own lad-
ders and scaffolds. Both
smokestacks are provided up

Tank 352, just recently com-
pleted east of the Gasoline
Pumphouse, may look like a
regular cylindrical tank, but
it has several distinct features.
Rising some 93 feet above
ground level (including 17
feet high dome type roof), it
is Lago's highest tank, It is
only 97 feet in diameter, but
has a capacity of 100,000 bar-
rels.
Used to store normal pent-
ane, which is a very volatile
product, the new tank operates
at a maximum pressure of 3
lbs. per square inch. Normal
pentane, a product from the
NFAR unit, is used for blend-
ing to make jet fuels and
naphtha.
Since the tank contains a
highly volatile product, its
dome roof is covered with a
one inch layer of sprayed Ure-
thane foam. This special foam
will help prevent evaporation
loss caused by sun heat.
The new tank, which repla-
ces spheroid tank No. 750, is
equipped with five safety val-
ves. Because of their shape, the
spheroid tanks have numerous


beams inside for support. They
also require considerable main-
tenance. The new tank needs
just normal maintenance and
no special supports for its dome
roof.
For building and raising the
roof, some special techniques
have been used. As none of La-
go's cranes could handle the
lifting job, the roof was con-
structed inside the tank at a
specific height over the man-
holes to fit exactly within the
tank. To lift the roof, air pres-
sure was applied through the
manholes. In less than two
hours, the roof was lifted by
air into position for welding.
Being subject to uplift pres-
sure, this new tank is perhaps
the only cylindrical tank that
is anchored. It is secured at its
base by 52 'bolts of 2 1 inch
thickness.
Work on the tank, built at
a total cost of $375,000 by
Chicago Bridge & Iron Com-
pany, started in March this
year. Project leader was Hil-
ton Hassell of Mechanical-En-
gineering.

Last Sunday, the first epi-
sode of Lago's new television
series "My Three Sons" was
presented over Tele-Aruba.
This comedy replaced the
"ADAM-12" program which
ran out for this year. The half-
hour police series "ADAM-12"
was first presented by Lago
on January 26, 1969.

"My Three Sons" is a pro-
gram for the whole family. It
features a household of an all-
male, motherless family, who
find themselves in the fun-
niest situations at times and
who can come up with the cra-
ziest things.

Starring in the program is
Fred McMurray and his three
"Sons" are Don Grady, Barry
and Stanley Livingston.
This comedy will be shown
every Sunday night, from 8 to
8:30 p.m. until new episodes
of "ADAM-12" are again
available, probably early next
year.

Ever since Tele.Aruba was
inaugurated in 1964, Lago has
been sponsoring a program,
including the musical "Broad-
way Goes Latin", the war se-
ries "Combat", "Science in Ac-


tion", and "ADAM-12". In ad-
dition, the Company presents
various safety films during the
Monday television program
from 6 to 6:30 p.m.
