LeRoy Johnston Jr. Comes to Lago


With 18 Years'
LeRoy Johnston Jr. (46)
joined Lago June 1 as vice
president and general mana-
ger. He brings to Lago more
than 18 years' experience in
the petroleum industry in Ve-
nezuela, where he worked in
Maracaibo, Amuay, Caripito,
La Salina and Caracas.
Mr. Johnston, who speaks
Spanish fluently, comes from
Creole-Caracas, where he had
been assistant manager of the
Refining Department.
With a BS degree in Me-
chanical Engineering from the
University of Kansas, Mr.
Johnston was originally em-
ployed June, 1948 with Creole-
Maracaibo as mechanical en-
gineer. He transferred to the
Amuay Refinery Sept. 27, '48.
Most of his career with
Creole Mr. Johnston spent at

the Amuay Refinery where he
became assistant refinery ma-
nager on September 1, 1965.
He was named acting refine-
ry manager on February 1,
1967 and manager on August
1, 1967. He held that post un-
til July 1, 1968 when he trans-
ferred to Creole-Caracas.
During the Second World
War, Mr. Johnston served as
a pilot in the U.S. Naval Air
Corps and served in the At-
lantic Fleet.
His hobbies include flying,
sailing and fishing. He owns
a gyrocopter at his farm in
Kansas.
Mr. Johnston is married
and has a son, LeRoy III (14),
who is attending Phillips Exe-
ter Academy in the U.S., and
a daughter, Jan (11), who is
attending grade school.

Departments. Joaquin Croes
of Process-Refining Division
advanced to Operations Su-
pervisor, while in Technical-
Economics & Planning Divi-
sion Ronald van Heeswijk
moved up to Senior Engineer.


Joaquin's first job at Lago
was as Messenger "B" in the
Industrial Relations Depart-
ment in December 1943. He
later transferred to Process
Department where he pro-
gressed to Levelman in the
Catalytic & Light Ends area
in 1952. He became Assistant
Operator in 1954 and Oper-

bility for all units presently
on DDC control in the Light
Ends area, the entire Refin-
ing Central Control House

After 6 -Year Creole Assignment


James R. Buchanan Jr. re-
joined Lago June 1, 1969 as
Operations Coordinator in Pro-
cess-Operations Coordination
Division. He returns to Lago
after more than 6-1/2 years
with Creole-Caracas.
On November 8, 1962, Mr.
Buchanan transferred from La-
go to Creole as Sr. Coordina-
tion Supply Analyst I. When
he left the Caracas office May
31, 1969, he held the position
of Supervising Coordination
Supply Analyst.
Mr. Buchanan, who has a
BS degree in chemical engin-
eering from North Carolina
State College and an MS de-
gree in chemical engineering
from the Massachusetts Insti-
tute of Technology, started at

Turbine Course in Philadel-
phia a couple of years ago.
Married, he has five children,
ranging in age from fifteen to
six years. On his next vaca.

zuela and Colombia.
Ron began as an engineer
with the Technical-Process
Engineering Division in 1963.
A B.S. graduate in Chemical
Engineering of the HTS in
Groningen, Holland, he was
assigned as contact engineer
for the Isomerization and Al-
kylation units until 1964 when
he went on a three-month
loan assignment to Aruba
Chemical Industries.
He returned to Lago's Pro-
cess Engineering Division in
January, 19i5. In October


that year he was sent to Esso
Research & Engineering Cen-
ter in Florham Park on an-
other loan assignment. Short.
ly after returning to Aruba
he left on a one-year loan as-
signment to the Esso Rotter-
dam Refinery in Holland. In
1967 he returned to Lago and
was assigned to the Econom-
ics & Planning Division.
Recently he was named
1970 Budget Coordinator. Du-
ring his employment Ron has
followed many courses, among
others, the Process Design
Course in Lima, Peru; Design
and Application for Auto-
matic Control in Geneva, New
York, and Linear Program-
ming at Florham Park, New
Jersey.
A Lago Science Fair Com-
mittee member, Ron is also
Director of Activities of the
Esso Club. In his spare time
he enjoys playing tennis.
Married, he has two daugh-
ters, five and three years old.

The first and important
part of the preparatory work
for the Fla. 150,000,000 Hy-
drodesulphurization P r o ject
was completed May 26, 1969
by the dredge "Georgia" of
Great Lakes Dredge & Dock
Company. This company car-
ried out the project as sub-
contractor for the Royal
Netherlands Harbour Works.
Since the time dredging oper-
ations started in the lagoon
at Lago on April 2, a huge
amount of material has been
removed.
The dredge cut a new en-
trance through the reef, 500
feet wide on the surface and
sloping down to 300 feet at
the bottom with a depth of
37 feet. Within the lagoon, a
turning basin was dredged to
34 feet. The material dredged
filled up an area extending
from Powerhouse No. 1 to the
General Office Building (see
map). Part of the reclaimed
area, rising some 10 feet
above mean sea water level,
will be used to erect the HDS
facilities.
At present a 325 feet pier
is being built at the new re-
claimed site by the Royal
Netherlands Harbor Works.


The pier will be used for
landing heavy equipment and
later for dry cargo shipment.
The total cost of the dredg-
ing project is valued at ap-
proximately Fls. 1,400,000.
The dredge "Georgia", with
Billy P. Coleman as captain,
Jim Lane as chief engineer
and Chief Mate E. W. Pier-
son, came from Tampa, Flo-
rida, after dredging a harbor
there. The project at Lago is
their third job. Field engineer
for the project was L. Mal-
oney, while J. Wilkerson was
Project Superintendent.

Employees' Identification Badges in The Course of Years

In the course of years, employee
identifications have changed in size,
shape and content. Until 1939, the
oval metal badge contained only a
number as identification.
However, during the war years it
became necessary to have better and
more personalized identification
badges. Since that time all badges
have been provided with the em-
ployee's picture. The first picture
badge was rectangular and a later
type was round, all in metal frames.
In 1950, the era of plastic badges
started. The first plastic badge was
square, followed by the oval type.
The new badge is since 1968.

tor. He is now president of the First Federal Savings and
Loan Association of Broward County, Fort Lauderdale.
