&awn a asso Lago Oil & Transport Co., Ltd. Aruba, Netherlands Antilles VOL. 30, No. 10 Process Manager MacNutt Retires; Spent Most of Lifetime in Aruba Among the six recruits ar- riving in San Nicolas Harbor on December 20, 1929 on the 12,000-dwt tanker "George G. Henry" was one who could little suspect he would make Aruba his home for nearly forty years and possibly more. An oldtimer who saw the Lago refinery grow from a few units into one of the world's largest refineries, Mr. G L MacNutt began as a 1st Class Helper in the Pressure Stills. Through an ad by Pan Am- erican Petroleum and Trans- port Co., Mr. MacNutt got to know about Aruba and the nascent refinery. He had worked before for two years with Standard Oil of Califor- nia in El Segundo. In the mid thirties, Mr. MacNutt's career at Lago took a favorable turn. He was assigned as shift foreman and later became assistant gen- eral foreman and process foreman of the Cracking Plant area. The year 1937 marked a turning point in Mr. Mac- Nutt's life. Late that year he married Mary Elisabeth, They have two daughters. May 23, 1969 When the refinery was shelled early in the morning of February 16, 1942, Mr. MacNutt was on duty in the plant. Mr MacNutt was among a group of Lago men who ob- served the startup of the cat- alytic cracking unit of Baton Rouge in 1943. In the fall of that year, he helped start up Lago's PCAR. In 1944, Mr. MacNutt had a brief assign- Retiring Process Manager G. L. MacNutt. (Continued on page 2) Gerente di Process G. L. MacNutt cu pension. M. An avid yachtsman, Mr. MacNutt and friends ventur- ed out on the Caribbean Sea as early as in 1930. In a 16- foot sailboat they went to take a close look at the Pa- raguana peninsula. When they returned at 1:30 a.m., some of his friends were sur- prised they made it during that windy night. In another sea venture, they capsized just off the Spanish Lagoon and had a long swim to shore after the boat had sunk. Mr. MacNutt learned to build his own boats, in various shapes and sizes. His favorite ailing boat was the 21-foot Flying Dutchman. (Continued from page 2) A charter member of the first Seroe Colorado Yacht Club, he had been the Club's commodore several times. He is a member of the Aruba Nautical Club and owns a 30- foot fishing boat named "KIM". Looking back to his best years in Aruba, Mr. MacNutt says he liked his work, had an enjoyable time with friends of all ages and a wonderful time in various water sports. "All this will be hard to du- plicate in Aruba or else- where," he remarks. Mr. MacNutt, who spent most of his life in Aruba, is finalizing his plans for a home at Malmok. Although as a director of Coastal Farms Inc. at Estil, South Carolina, he will dedicate much of his time to the business in the U.S., Mr. MacNutt says he feels Aruba is his home and will spend a great part of the year at his Aruba residence. As one who has seen Lago and Aruba grow, Mr. MacNutt remarks that during his years in Aruba he saw tremendous growth, while things were well handled by all concerned. The Government did not let things get out of hand. About new investments in Aruba, Mr. MacNutt sees a great challenge and 'opportunities for Lago employees and others on the island and he is glad that these activities will benefit everybody. They were accompanied by business executives and com- munity leaders. The young men and women, between ages 15 and 18, were winners in the 1968-1969 youth incentive project "Ope- ration Aruba", sponsored by the Junior Achievement or- ganization of Union County in cooperation with the Aruba Government, Aruba Trade & Industry Association, Cham- ber of Commerce of Aruba, Aruba Rotary Club, Kiwanis Club, Lago, and other local civic and educational organi- zations. The youngsters were select- ed from 31 JA Companies established and in operation, with more than 900 boys and girls from 23 public and pa- rochial high schools as active participants. Aruba was chosen because it has world's largest oil re- finery, world's largest salt water evaporating plant, and is an important shipping and trading center. Responding to government stimulation, the hotel and tourist industries in Aruba are also fast developing into important economic fac- tors. Because of all these fac- tors, Aruba offers a unique case study of private enter- prise in action. The Junior Achievers were With Seroe Colorado School Teacher G. D. Lester. The training included a theoretical part and troubleshooting on gas analyzers on the units. A very sophisticated in- strument, the chromatograph system chiefly consists of a gas analyzer and a program- mer. The system does three jobs: it takes a sample and conditions it; it analyzes the process sample based on in- structions from the program- mer (a small special purpose computer); and records the NEW ARRIVALS March 5, 1n, SWENT, John U.S. Navy; A son, Moses Michel. The equipment operates with pneu- matic, mechanical and elec- tronic control devices. Lago has fifteen gas chro- matograph' systems installed on the various units. Working around the clock, some of these analyzers take a sample, analyze and record it in a matter of two minutes. More complicated process stream testing takes about 20 min- utes. The continuous analyz- ing system provides the oper. ator with up-to-date informa- tion to run his unit more ef- ficiently. These on-stream an. alyzers are being used more and more in petroleum indus- try and several of them will be installed on the desulphur- ization units.
