Home Financing Plan Announced By Lago to Assist Its Employees Recently management of Lago announced a new home financing plan for its emplo- yees. This financing can be arranged through Lago's Home Building Foundation. The plan will assist employees to buy or build their first home or to make additions to their pre- sent home. The house must be intended for the personal oc- cupancy by the employee. With the expansion of ac- tivities of the Home Building Foundation, mortgage money can now be made available to New'Esso Oranjestad' Arrives in Home Port After crossing the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea for 7 days, 17 hours and 54 minutes, the new Lago tug "Esso Oranjestad" tied up in San Nicolas Harbor at about 12:30 p.m. Friday, May 2. The tug left Port Arthur Thursday, April 24, at 19:00 hours. The first of two new tugs ordered by Lago from Gulf (Continued on page 6) employees with a nominal downpayment based on the employee's building plans. Unlike past practice, the foundation will not build hous- es to. be sold to employees. Rather, the new mortgage ar- rangement makes it possible for employees to obtain their own home designed and con- structed according to their in- dividual liking and location. For some time employees have faced difficulties in ob- taining suitable mortgages for building or purchasing a home. This situation has al- so been discussed frequently between the Independent Oil Workers Union of Aruba and Lago Management. Some highlights of the plan are: Relatively long period for loan repayment; minimum downpayment is 5%; low In- terest rate; payroll deduction for loan repayment, easier system of collateral; mortgage loan can be used to liquidate an existing high interest mortgage, and a number of building plans will be made (Continued on page 8) Aawm a g 5Pss& Ben J. Francis opened the training session for the first group of 23 technical school graduates under La- go's Pre-Employment Pre- paratory Program. The pro- gram offers a six-month trai- ning opportunity with the possibility of employment with Lago during or upon successful completion of the course. A second group of 23 students will begin a similar training June 23. Depending on their training and job performance, those trainees accepted for em- ployment may in the future advance to the position of Tradesman A or to a super- visory level. The trainees, who are be- tween ages 18-25, will receive an allowance of Fls. 2 for each session they attend to help cover transportation costs. Classes are scheduled three times a week from 7-9 p.m. in the Administration Building, Room 277. During the training, a student may be dropped at any time due to poor academic perform- ance, poor attitude, frequent absence, or a combination of all three. The course will cover Ref- inning Fundamentals. Petrol- eum Chemistry. Equipment Skills (Instrument, Electric- al, Machinist) and Safety. All instruction will be in English. The instructors, all Antil- lean engineers and other highly qualified National em- ployees, are: Felix Croes, H. A. Kelly, Carlos de Cuba, Alex Hoo, J. Noguera, C. As- sang, Ray Farro, F. E. Dow- ling, A. Martinus, A. Britten, H. Coffi, F. Bikker, E. A. Beaujon and W. Brinkman. Those offered employment will be assigned to the Mech- anical Department and will start as trainees. Home Financing (Continued from page 1) available free of charge. One condition for obtaining a mortgage from the Home Building Foundation under the new plan is that the house must be built in Aruba on long lease or property land. The amount of the loan is determined for each indivi- dual case, depending on the repayment capacity of the employee. Applications for a mortgage loan under the new plan should be submitted to: E. D. Fowler, GOB Room 163. Ben J. L. MacNutt Witty MC Gerry Smit President W. A. Murray Reciter G. Cvejanovich Retiring "Lou" MacNutt "The Retiring of Lou MacNutt" By G. J. Cvejanovich Lou came to Aruba in 29 straight from Union High. Got off the tanker, took one look around and almost said goodbye. Now a fella named Rodgers was running the show when Lou first came our way. Lou was getting 180 per month, or over 10 guilders a day! He was working 56 hours a week to earn that princely sum. But got his room, board and laundry free and an occasional L bottle of rum. SStarted out as a helper first class, not as a chem engineer. Finally made operator 1st class, a high point in his career. About that time Captain Rodgers was out and L.G. Smith took his place. But Lou kept on plugging right along keeping that same steady pace. The Process Foreman's slot opened up, Lou's star was start- ing to rise. He became the boss of the whole Cracking Plant to every- one's utter surprise. As the years rolled by Lou had a good life working for LO&T. He had his kids, he had his boats and of course his wife Mary. In 46 another change came when Smith said goodbye to the bunch. Joe Horigan came and took over command, but Lou just rol- led with the punch. The Div. Sup's spot was next on the list of our Hero's long climb to the top. He looked toward that day when his mother could say "you can't call my fine son a flop." Horigan left around 56 and Mingus rode tall in the saddle. Lou is still here, but Mingus has gone to Tyler to tend to his cattle. Now Lou was starting to set his sights high his ambition grew to excess. The Process Manager's job moved him up the ladder of suc- cess. Bud Murray took over in 61, but that didn't faze Lou at all. He knew he'd be here till the end of time, answering de.- S.r.; tiny's call. 1"- Lou finally rose to the top of the heap an acting Lago V.P. I MacNutt assumed he was here to stay on this I think we all agree. Then Bud had enough, called Lou in one day early last No- vember. Said "Lou you've been around here too long, we're throwing you out in December." Now Lou's Lago consultant will he ever quit? The answer seems to be never.
