Lago Is Host to IR Conference for CreolelLago Representatives


For the first time, Lago
was host to a Creole/Lago
Industrial Relations Confer-
ence April 10 and 11, 1969.
Attending the conference in
Lago's General Office Build-
ing Conference Room 200
were representatives of Cre-
ole's Eastern and Western
Divisions, Creole-Caracas, Es-
so Inter-America, and Lago.
The conference was opened
by Lago's Industrial Admin-
istrator Awar Hamid, who
was the conference chairman.
The Creole representatives
were J. R. Tarbez, E. Oyar.

mori, H. Riquezes, L. E. Bal-
za, George Hall, J. Coriat, L.
Fernandez and P. B. Chaim-
ness. Also present was George
Dewey of Esso Inter-America,

President W. A. Murray Announces

His Retirement Effective June 1


Early this week, Lago Presi-
dent W.A. Murray announced
his retirement effective June
1, 1969. Having been with La-
go sice January 1, 1957, Mr.
Murray has over 36 years
with Lago and other com-
panies affiliated with Stand-
ard Oil Co. (New Jersey).
President Murray also an-
nounced that with his retire-
ment, Lago's Board of Direc-
tors plans to elect Mr. James
M. Ballenger President, and
Mr. Leroy Johnston Jr., Vice
President and General Man-
ager of Lago, both to be ef-
fective June 1 this year. Mr.
Johnston is at present Assis-
tant Manager of Creole's Re-
fining Department. Mr. Bal-
lenger has been Lago's Vice


President since February, 1966.
In addition to his duties as
President of Lago, Mr. Bal-
lenger will be named Manager
of Creole's Refining Depart-
ment, also effective June 1.
Mr. Ballenger will continue
to reside in Aruba, dividing
his time between Lago and
Creole as necessary.


Lago was the safest refine-
ry in 1968 among a group of
large refineries worldwide as
reported by the National
Safety Council. There were
twenty-nine companies in this
group.

Albino Yarzagaray of Mechanical


Is Promoted to
Effective April 1, Albino O.
Yarzagaray of Mechanical-
Engineering Division was pro-
moted to Senior Engineer in
the Project Engineering Sec-
tion.
A Mechanical Engineering
graduate of the HTS in Bre-
da, The Netherlands, Albino
joined Lago in September
1962. His first assignment as
Engineer was in the Mechani-
cal Department's Technical &
Administration Section.
In January, 1966 he trans-
ferred to Maintenance &
Construction Section as Act-
ing Area Supervisor assigned
to field Work. He later be-
came acting Supervising En-
gineer in the Project Services
Section. In December, 1966,
he left for Canada on a one-
year training assignment with
Imperial Oil Enterprises Ltd.,
in Sarnia, Ontario.
Since his return he has
been assigned to the Mech-
anical Engineering Section,
where among other things he

eer on the installation of new
compressors at Powerhouse 1.
Off the job, Albino's chief
hobby is sports. He enjoys a
good game of soccer and is
chairman of the "S.C.A." soc-
cer club of Paradera.
On his next vacation he is
planning to visit friends in the
U.S.A. and Canada.

1945 he transferred to
Process-L.O.F. as Process
Helper "D" where he ad-
vanced to Pumper in 1948.
Mr. Lambertus, an As-
sistant Operator in Proc-

George Moss Crosses Atlantic


On 30-ft. Yacht
Since July 14, 1967, George
Moss (39, single), hailing
from Knoxville, Tennessee,
has been spending most of his
days in the cabin or on the
deck of his 30 feet yacht
"Morning Light". Born some
700 kilometers from the sea,
he was 22 when he first saw
a sailboat.
On April 9, 1969, "Captain"
Moss dropped anchor in
Oranjestad Harbor after cov-
ering more than 10,000 nauti-
cal miles with his yacht,
equipped with sails and an
auxiliary inboard motor.
Former Acting General
Manager of an American hy-
draulics components company
operating in Europe, George
worked, among others, in
Germany and Holland.
He decided to take a "vac-
ation" and spent it sailing and
seeing more of the world. Af-
ter reading many books on
navigation and the art of
sailing, George bought his
yacht from the Shipyard of
Jan Jongert of Medemblik,
Holland. He and his brother
Robert, a schoolteacher, left
Dutch Naval Base Den Hel-
der July 14, 1967 on their first
sea edvanture. They sailed the
North Sea, then through the
Kiel Canal to Copenhagen,

Denmark. After returning to
Holland, George proceeded
alone to Ostende, Belgium.
From this point, he crossed
the English channel to Burn-
ham-on-Crouch, near London,
where he stayed until Novem-
ber, 1967. His next stop in
England was Falmouth, from
where he set sail on Decem-
ber 11, 1967 for Palma Island
(Canary Islands).
After a voyage of twenty-
six days and somewhat ex-
hausted from three gales,
Skipper Moss arrived at Pal-
ma. During this long stretch,
George got a good chance of
putting his theoretical know-
ledge of navigation and sail-
ing into practice.
To permit him gettifig some
rest, George was assisted by
"Henry", a special automatic
steering gear which he gave
this name. Once set and with
a steady wind direction, this
English patented steering gear
will keep the yacht riding as
if controlled by an expert
helmsman.
On January 25, 1968, Skip-
per Moss weighed anchor at
Palma. His next port of call
was in Barbados. With favor-
able winds and sea, George
made the Atlantic crossing in
24 days, 11 hours and 55

vice April 10. It will be dismantled to make room for the
hydrodesulphurization facilities. The Alky and Cracking
Plant flares will burn the gas formerly handled by the la-
goon flare. Built in 1942 when the PCAR was constructed,
the lagoon flare has served as a night mark for fishermen
along with the Seroe Colorado lighthouse.

George spent several months
in the Lesser Antilles, visit-
ing, among others, Grenada,

to sail with relatives and
friends who came over to vis-

In the Netherlands Antil-
les, George stayed for a few
months in Curagao. He also
participated in a boat race at
Bonaire in March this year.
He was recommended to visit
the friendly island of Aruba
by a South African yachts-
man he met in Grenada.
Seafarer Moss is not sure
of his final destination, but he


will continue his trip probab-
ly to Santa Marta, Cartage-
na, and via the Panama Canal
to Tahiti. Though he travels
alone, he says he does not
mind taking another advent-
urer along on certain condi.
