Isaac J. Chin was promoted
to Engineering Associate -
General Engineering Section
in the Mechanical-Engineering
Division.
Isaac has spent his entire
Lago career in the Engineer-
ing Division. He was employ-
ed in 1944 as Junior Clerk II
in the Technical-Engineering
Division, where he progressed
to Draftsman "B" in 1947.
The following year he resign-
ed to study in the U.S.A.
where he obtained his B.S.
degree in Civil Engineering
from the Indiana Institute of
Technology. He also took
graduate courses in Hydrau-
lics and Reinforced Concrete
at the Purdue University. Af-
ter graduating in 1951 he
worked for a year with Fos-
ter Wheeler Limited on a re-
finery expansion project in
Trinidad as an Assistant Ci-
vil Engineer.
In 1952 Isaac was reem-
ployed in Lago's Technical-
Engineering Division as
Draftsman "A". He advanced
to Engineering Assistant "A"
a year later and to Engineer
"A" in 1954. He was promot-

Engineer in Mechanical-En-

Isaac also holds an ICS di-
ploma in Architecture. In
fact, he has worked chiefly in
the structural and architectu-
ral design of most of Lago's
refinery structures.
An activity he especially
enjoyed has been training ju-
nior engineering division per-
sonnel.
Isaac is married and has a

purposes at this gathering.
Their stag party at the
Aruba Golf Club was attend-
ed by some 43 men, including
Mechanical-Engineering per-
sonnel and some guests.
While the proceeds of the
1967 fund drive went to AR-
CA (Aruba Charity Associa-
tion), last year's collection
was designated to help buy
Christmas parcels for needy
Brasil parishioners.
Those at the party contri-
buted f. 156 which was hand-
ed to Father J. Goes of Bra-
sil's Cristo Rey Church.
The welcoming address was
given by Isaac Chin, while
Mechanical-Engineering Div-
ision Superintendent R. D.
Merrick delivered a Christmas
message at the party.
The chief organizers of the
occasion were Henry F. Coffi,
Al Britten and Ken Brook.

Lago's representative at the MULTI-AMP Institute's Coordination Seminar held in Cran-
ford, New Jersey, recently was Henry F. Coffi, a senior engineer in Mechanical-Engineer-

Lago Makes Donation

To Help Winkel Society

In Charitable Work
President W. A. Murray,
presented a cash donation to
the F W. P. Winkel Charit-
able Society at Christmas
time. This Society renders as-
sistance to charity cases is-
land-wide throughout the year.
In presenting a check to
Winkel Society's President H.
M. T. Steenhuizen, Mr. Mur-
ray commented that "we are
pleased to assist your society
in its charitable work among
the needy families of our
community, especially at this
time of the year."
In addition to its regular
distribution of food baskets,
the Winkel Society helps ad-
ditional families with special
baskets at Christmas time.
Lago's donation went towards
the Christmas baskets project.

New PCAR Passenger /Freight Lift

Rides Now Like a Hotel Elevator


All operating personnel and
other employees having to
work on -the elevated floors
of the PCAR can now have a
faster and smoother ride than
before. The new elevator tra-
vels in 45 seconds from the
1st to the 14th floor, taking
a maximum load of 4,400 lbs.

The new freight/passenger
elevator is easy to operate
and has a self-levelling feat-
ure. This means that the car
will stop on exactly even level
with each floor no matter
what the load is. This was
not so with the old lift.

Unlike the old elevator,
which was in use since the
PCAR was built in 1942, the
doors of the new lift also open
and close automatically like
a hotel lift.

The moving car has two
emergency features. There is
a telephone for communica-
tion with the PCAR operator
and there is an alarm button.


This is the controller for
the new lift in the machine
room on the 16th floor of
the PCAR.

In addition, operating person-
nel using the two-way radio
system can contact each other
from inside the elevator car.

The new lift will also re-
place the Ali-Hoist that was
temporarily used for the
PCAR turnaround and during
construction of the new ele-
vator. Work on the elevator
started in May, 1968 and end-
ed in December, 1968. The
total project, including dis-
mantling of the old lift,
amounted to approximately
$ 55,000. The work was carried
out by the Otis Elevator Co.
and Lago personnel. Project
leader for the new lift was
Henry F. Coffi of Mechanical-
Engineering.

Two smaller lifts are used
in the refinery: one in the
Laboratories and one at the
Storehouse, both for trans-
porting materials. The Lago
Hospital has two passenger
and two freight elevators.

Lago Is First to Host Seminar

On Chemical Cleaning Manual S i


Recently Lago was the site
for a three-day Chemical
Cleaning Seminar sponsored
by Esso Research and Engin-
eering Company. Coordinators
for the seminar were B. Sear-
les and B. Howe of Esso Res-
earch.

The seminar is the first
held to introduce a Chemical
Cleaning Manual to South
and Central American affil-
iates. The manual is prepared
by Esso Research people.

The seminar included dis-
cussions, problem solving ses-
sions and one field demon-
stration of chemical cleaning
equipment.

The manual deals with such
topics as Principles of Chem-
ical Cleaning, Operational
Chemical Cleaning, Chemical
Cleaning Equipment, High
Pressure Jetting Equipment,
Anti-Fouling Techniques and
how each company can esta-
blish its own chemical clean-
ing program.

While mechanical cleaning
has been the chief method of
removing rust and scale from
furnace and boiler tubes, this
manual now emphasizes the


use of a high pressure jetting
machine using water for this
type of work. Also other
cleaning methods using air,
water, steam, sand or chem-
icals were explained during
the seminar.

This new cleaning method
is faster, more efficient, req-
uires minimum dismantling of
equipment and virtually elim-
inates metal surface damage
during cleaning.

The high pressure equip-
ment should, however, be used
by well-trained personnel as
the water jet, for instance, is
capable of cutting timber and
even bricks. It can be oper-
ated at a capacity of as high
as 10,000 pounds per square
inch.

The seminar was attended
by affiliates' representatives
from Jamaica, Colombia, Am-
uay and Aruba Chemical In-
dustries. Attending from La-

C. Richardson and P. J. Za-
gers, Safety Advisor E. A.
Beaujon, and F. E. Dowling
and John W. Hodgson, both
of Mechanical-Engineering.
