Merry Christmas 1968 Lago Oil & Transport Co., Ltd. A Preside t's Message On behalf of my associates and myself, I take this oppor- tunity to extend Season's Greetings to all Lago employ- ees and annuttants, their fam- ilies, and friends. Christmas each year brings a rebirth of faith; it's a season filled wzth good intentions and hopes for a brighter future At this time, I'm happy to say, a brighter future is as- President W. sured for Lago and Aruba through several large projects that will be under conrruction in our refinery during the next two to three years. Like all progressive companies, Logo has to keep modifying and innovat'ing to meet the constantly chaigingl demands on the pol industry. We can be proud that ie are able to meet thrse challenges We may also take pride in our safety performance So far this year, we have had an overall improvement of about 80c/ over our safety performance in 1967. This year has also been marked by several other f major mo- provements: A number of huge tanks have been built, and mod- ernization of our piers has been completed recently. Our sea panorama will be changed by the Offshore Mooring Facllitics, now under construction. All these facilities will help us keep pace wzth progress in the petroleum industry. They also provide greater job security for us and employment for many hundreds of construction workers. This gives us a sense of satisfaction and confidence in a better future. It is in this spirit and with the hope for better things in 1969 that I wish each and everyone of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Santa Claus rides over the refinery area, bringing a bright star. The star represents the lights that will brighten the many new plants of the desulphurization facilities and the new offshore berth. It also means a brighter future that these new pro- jects will bring. The Santa Claus scene is a water color painting by Joe de Cuba, who also took the pictures. The Back Page The frame around the two poems by Miss Mercedes Beaujon illustrates some of the things that bring more joy to the Christmas season: musical instruments, de- corations, gifts. The water color painting is by Miss Lydia I. de Lange. Nos Cubierta E cubierta di e anja aki ta munstra refineria, cu mas cu mil luz cendi. As agreed upon last year between the ASU and Dago, at the time of transfer Lago would assist the Aruba Sport Union with a five-year sub- sidy amounting to approxim- ately Fls. 215,000 over a five- year period. The Sport Park offers fac- ilities for numerous sports, such asitrack andifield events, baseball, softball, football, volleyball, basketball, tennis, cricket, boxing and judo. ARUBA ESSO NEWS December 20 1968 r a iki Beaujon Brings Brighter Christmas to Her Neighborhood Many Lago employees un. dertake special activities dur- ing the season to help make Christmas brighter for others. One of them who shares her joy of Christmas with others is Miss Mercedes (Siki) Beau- jon of Compt.-Office Services. Each year at Christmas time Siki rounds up the child- ren in her neighborhood at Simeon Antonio and teaches them carols and prepares them for a Christmas play. Siki, who writes the plays herself, also designs the costumes for the children and also accom. panies them with her organ music. The week before Christmas, she invites the parents of the children, neigh- bors and co-workers to her home, where in her spacious garden, she brings the spirit of the season to her many guests. In addition to all these pre- parations which take up most of her time after office hours and her weekends, she and the kids make Christmas de- corations to raise funds. The proceeds go towards the pur- chase of food for a large Christmas basket. For three consecutive years, each Christ- mas Siki and "her" children have been making a poor family happy with their gift. Siki has, no doubt, taught '-pif these children the pleasure of giving, not only material things, but their time and ef- forts as well. An Office Clerk in the Of- fice Services Section, she rec- ently received a gold watch for 25 years of company serv. ice. During seventeen years of her Lago career she worked in the Marine Department. Siki accompanies her child- ren choir on the organ. Siki ta acompanja su koor di much ariba orgel. Her hobbies include writing poems and bowling. She has participated in various island bowling tournaments and has won several trophies. This year Siki shares yet another of her talents. Though the moment- ous occasion will be celebrat- ed by people in many lands, the way they celebrate it will vary from country to country. In Aruba, there are people of some 40 nationalite: -wiho will, .to doubt, celebrate Christmas according to their own traditions. Whatever their customs, the event is a univer- sal, but yet a personal, feast day. In the very beginning, Christmas was mainly a rel- igious holiday. But, as the custom spread, local ways of celebrating began to blend with the central theme of The Nativity. Christmas Decorations As one of the practices dur. ing the feast of Saturn, for example, the Romans decorat- ed their temples with green boughs and flowers. The Druids on the other hand made It a practice of collecting mist- letoe and hanging it in their homes as a symbol of the season. From the Saxons, today's Christmas received the cus- tom of decorating with holly, ivy and bay. The use of Christmas trees as holiday symbols began in Germany in the 8th Century. Although the oak tree had been used as a sign to Odin, a god usually associated with Norse myth, the first Christ- mas tree, a fir, replaced the oak later and became a sym- bol of the Christ Child. Later, candles and orna- ments began to appear on the trees as special adornment. Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria, is said to have introduced the custom in Great Britain. Carols Music also has grown into an important Christmas tra- dition. Originally, liturgical singing alone was done, too theological for popular use. The 13th Century, however, saw the beginnings of popular carols, written in the local language, largely through the influence of Francis of Assisi. From Italy, the practice spread to France, Germany. England and other countries. Even today, the practice of house to house carol singing is part of the spirit of Christ- mas season. In South America, especial- ly in nearby Venezuela, the "Aguinaldos" and "Gaitas" are popular during the entire season. In Aruba, these local (Continued on page 14) Pascu Den E fiesta di mas important den mundu Cristian ta jegan- do trobe, esta Nacemento di Cristo. Pero den di Siglo 13 nos ta mira cu- minzamento di canticanan, scirbi den e idioma local, pa majoria parti bao influencia di San Francisco di Assisi.
