FIs. 150,000,000 Investment in Desulphurization


Facilities Announced by President W. A. Murray


In announcements made last week, President W. A.
Murray reported that Lago will build a desulphuriza-
tion complex of over NAFls. 150,000,000.
This project will represent the largest single new in-
vestment ever made in the history of the Netherlands
Antilles and will have a most favorable impact on the
Aruban and the Antillean economy.
In the first place, the new facilities will provide new
permanent jobs for 200 employees. Secondly, during
the construction period there will be a peak employment
of up to 2000 construction workers. Hence, its effect
will be felt in every sector of the business community.


The entire project will in-
clude four major parts:
(1) The processing complex


will include a vacuum still,
hydrogen generating facilities,

The following Cost-of-Living
bonus payment, Thrift earn-
ings and additional contribu-
tion have been announced for
Lago employees:

Cost-of-Living Payment
In accordance with the Col-
lective Working Agreement
signed between Lago and
IOWUA on July 14, 1967, a
cost-of-living bonus payment
of 85% of the employee's reg-
ular monthly earnings will be
made again in December, 1968.
This lump sum is an advanced


payment for cost of living
from December 3, 1968 to Dec-
ember 2, 1969. This COL bonus
will be paid on December 9,
1968.
58 Cents per Guilder-
Additional Thrift
Contribution
Lago Management also an-
nounced that each Lago Thrift
Plan participant will be cred-
ited with 58 cents for every
guilder he contributed during
the twelve months ending Oc-
tober 31, 1968. A minimum of


FIs. 300 additional Thrift Con-
tribution is guaranteed for
every participant who contri-
buted 10% for the full 12-
month period.
Any participant who is se-
parated from the Company
after October 31, 1968 for any
reason other than discharge or
resignation (except under
C.W.A. Art. 21), will also be
granted an additional contri-
bution calculated on the above
basis.

hydrodesulphurizers, a gas
scrubber and a sulphur plant.
(2) The harbor facilities will
be improved.
(3) A pipeline will be built
from Venezuela to Aruba to
transport natural gas to Lago
for use in the desulphuriza-
tion process. This gas will be
used to manufacture the hy-
drogen required for the proc-
ess as well as for fuel.
(4) New tanks will be con-
structed with a total capacity
of over 3,000,000 barrels.

processing and harbor facili-
ties will be the area southeast
of Powerhouse No. 1.
In the desulphurization pro-
cess an entirely new proc-
ess at Lago present refin-


ery streams will be conducted
through the new facilities,
which will separate them into
components that can be treat.

phur blending stocks will be
made by this process. These
stocks will be used to blend
the desired end product: Low
Sulphur Fuels.
Some of the plants will be
working at nearly a 1000 lbs.

The Propane Loading Rack, once located at the Snow Pile
area, has been movbd to the central loading area for pro-
ducts sold locally, such as aviation gasoline, motor gasoline,
jet fuel, kerosene and gasoil. Stored in two tanks (Nos. 806-
807) in liquid form, the propane is pumped here through
metal loading arms into customer tank truck. Charged with
the operations of the Loading Rack is Isaril Arnell (left),
who handles business with truck driver N. Franken.


Retroactive Participation in

Annuity & Insurance Plan Approved
Lago's Board of Directors approved retroactive
participation in the Annuity and Insurance Plan.
Re-opening of the enrollment period begins Dec-
ember 1, 1968 and ends January 31, 1969. During
this two-month period, those employees who are not
presently in this Plan will be permitted to partici-
pate retroactive to January 1, 1965.
To enable these employees to contribute to the
Annuity and Insurance Plan retroactive to January
1, 1965, new participants will be permitted to use
their non-withdrawable credits in the Thrift Plan.

the U.S. East Coast increased
their efforts to find a solution
for the air pollution problem.
It is known that one of the
major pollutants is the sul-
phur which finds its way into
the air when fuel oils are
burned in the heavily indus-
trialized cities on the East
Coast. Government agencies
announced some time ago that
laws will be passed limiting
the maximum content of sul-
phur in the fuels to be used
in the affected areas.
"We realized at once that
the decision to limit the sul-
phur content of the fuels
would have a tremendous im-
pact on Lago since the U.S.
East Coast is our largest
marketing area. To meet the
low-sulphur levels, some of
which have already become
effective, our people began
developing the Desulphuriza-
tion Project."
"If everything goes accord-
ing to plan," Mr. Murray
stated, "we will let the con-
tracts in a few weeks, and we
expect work to begin before
the end of this year and be
completed in late 1971. In fact,

two years' time."
Concluding his remarks, Mr.
Murray said: "Our task in
securing this 150 million guil-
der investment for Lago was
not an easy one. We had to
design and redesign many,
many times and carry on num-
erous negotiations with all

the project is ready to be ex-
ecuted, I would like to say
that once again Lago has
demonstrated its faith in its
people and in the future of
Aruba. With this project La-
go now has a brighter future."

Know What to Do in These Traffic Emergencies!


While driving you may find
yourself in many emergency
situations. It's important that
you know beforehand what is
the best thing to do. But
whatever the situation, there
are two basic things you can
do that may save your life:
1. Stay calm! Don't panic!
2. Know what to do!
On this page, there are some
emergencies you may exper.
ience as a driver. The hints
given may help you choose
the right defensive action to
put the odds in your favor.


Your Brake Fails


If your brake pedal slaps
on the floor uselessly, you can
do several things:

1. Try to pump the pedal.
You may still be able to
work up enough pressure
to stop or slow down.

2. If there is no pressure,
use your parking brake.

3. By shifting into second
gear, you will let engine
compression help you stop
or slow down.

When going downhill, look
for something to sideswipe -
roadside brush, a guardrail,
or even parked cars. (Dented
sheet metal can be repaired).
Another precaution is to use
your horn or light to warn
other drivers and pedestrians
that you are out of control.

What To Do If
You Go Into A Skid

Abrupt turns, sudden
change of lane or hard brak-
ing can throw you into a dan-
gerous skid, especially on wet
roads. What could you do if
the rear end of your car starts


to slide? Here are some do's
and don't's:
- Take your foot off the
gas pedal at once.
- Don't turn the steering
wheel hard away from
the direction of the skid.
Otherwise, you may get
into a spin.
- Instead, turn your wheels
in the same direction the
rear of the car is skid-
ding. But don't oversteer.
- Never hit the brakes dur-
ing a side skid correction.
