He is taking over the posi-
tion of Industrial Relations
head, formerly held by Oscar
V. Antonette.
Mr. Hamid came to Lago
from Esso Standard Eastern's
Employee Relations Depart-
ment in New York. His New
York assignment included a
brief orientation in employee
relations. Prior to leaving
New York for Aruba, he at-
tended a seminar in Personnel
Administration given by the
National Industrial Confer-
ence Board at Atlantic City,
N.J.
After completing school in
Indonesia, Mr. Hamid attend-
ed the American University of
Beirut, Lebanon, where he
earned his Bachelor's degree


in Business Administration.

Save Those Qreat Treasures
A large percentage of injuries caused on the job are related
to the hands. This is very natural, as practically every job is
done with their help. And that's why even office employees
injure their hands on file drawers, electric fans, desk plate
glass, and other equipment.
All these injuries, like any other injuries, can be avoided by
taking the necessary precautions.
No matter how skillful you are with your hands, they cannot
think, they are your servants as they will go wherever you want
them to go. Therefore, you have to think first, if you want to
keep them safe and sound.
Here are some recommendations that will help you preserve
these precious treasures your hands:
a. Do not operate any machinery if their protective guards are
not in place.
b. Stop your machine before cleaning, greasing or repairing it.
c. Use the proper size tools for the work you are doing.
d. Never use a wrench as a hammer, a file as a lever or pliers
as a wrench. Each tool has its specific application.
e. Use protective gloves each time you have to handle rough
or chipped materials.
f. Avoid putting your hands in direct contact with acids, al-
kalis, solvents or petroleum derivatives and keep your hands
clean and free from irritant chemicals.
g. Do not use solvents, naphtha or turpentine for cleaning
hands. Wash them with soap or other adequate detergents.
h. When an injury or scratch is sustained, no matter how
minor it may appear, get first aid at once.
The time spent in caring for your hands will avoid a series
of problems for you and will save you time in the long run.
Don't endanger your hands! Remember, you earn your daily
bread with them! Take care of them!

Modernized Acid HandlinglStorage

Ensure More Efficient Operation


Lago's acid handling and
storage system has now been
improved by more efficient
use of tankage, installation of
new and more powerful
pumps, new instruments and
renewal of piping.
Whereas 18 tanks had for-
merly been used in three wi-
dely separated areas (Acid
Plant, Acid Treating Plant
and Alkylation Plant), now
six tanks at the S.A.R. and
two tanks at the Acid Treat-
ting Plant will handle all the
fresh acid, spent acid and vir-
gin sludge.
Ten pumps formerly in acid
service have also been replac-


ed by six new, larger pumps.
For more efficient oper-
ation the acid tanks at S.A.R.,
which had to be manually
tape-gaged, can now be con.
trolled through boardmounted
level gages and flow record-
ers. A safety system at the
S.A.R. includes an alarm that
will go off whenever the fresh
acid line pressure is too high
or too low.
New magnetic flow indica-
tor/controllers have also been
installed in the acid line to
AAR-2 to control acid flow to
the reactors. A safety feature
introduced on several acid

Gilhuys Teaches Squad Leaders

Advanced Course in First Aid M


A First Aid Training began
recently for nine squad leaders
in the Administration Build-
ing, Room 277. Three are from
Technical, three from Mecha-
nical and three from Comp-
troller's.
The 26-hour course with
Head Nurse U.E. Gilhuys as
instructor is being taught from
1 to 3 p.m. on Tuesdays and
Thursday.
The First Aid training is in-
tended to assure better care
of the injured, to contribute


to greater interest in matters
of personal health and to help
develop safety consciousness.
The course, which includes
lectures, demonstrations and
films, covers subjects such as
General Directions, Checking
for Injuries and Wounds, Arti-
ficial Respiration and Asphyx-
iation, Fractures, Treatment
for Shock and Unconscious-
ness.
In the future, a First Aid
training will also be given to
a group of supervisors.

tem that will warn when the
tank level is too high or too
low. All these changes also
involved renewals and alter-
ations to acid piping.
These alterations are des-
igned to improve the acid
system from an inefficient,
time-consuming batch oper-
ation to a continuous oper-
ation. The total cost was ap-
proximately $110,000.
Whereas work on these
changes began in March this
year, part of the new improv-
ed acid system was placed in
service last month.

changing the system was Hil-
ton B. Hassell of Mechanical-
