Twenty Four Students Receive

Aid To Further Education Abroad

This year, the Lago Schol- grants, amounting to over
arship Foundation has grant- Fls. 1,250,000 investment in

Aruba students for the school
year 1968-1969. Of these,
eighteen are renewals to stu-
dents now attending universi-
ties or colleges in the U.S. or
in Holland, and six are new
grants. Three of the new
scholarship recipients will
study in the U.S., one in Puer-
to Rico and two in Holland.
Since 1957 the Lago Schol-
arship Foundation has been
awarding scholarship grants to Training Section head F. S.

The all-expense paid pro-
gram is aimed at developing
trained technical and profes-
sional national employees in

quirements for such personnel.

A Direct Digital Control
(DDC) training course began
for a group of sixteen employ-
ees August 12. Participants
included process engineers,
process foremen and shift
foremen.

An Engineer's Training
Course, this training is aimed
at acquainting a selected
group of employees with the
capabilities of the control
system over and above con-
trol functions.

This new system controls,
among others, such variables
as temperature, pressure, level
and flow rates of the various
process units.

Lago's Safe Driving Program Pays Off Every Three Months


Initiated over ten years ago,
Lago's Safe Driving Program
pays off for Lago drivers both
in safety and cash. If they
operate their automotive
equipment safely for three
consecutive months, they will
earn a cash award of FlU. 10
for each quarter.
Qualifying under the pro-
gram will be any employee
whose regular and major duty
is to operate a truck, pickup,
regular automobile, tractor,
Ross carrier, fork lift truck
and rubber tire crane and who
during any quarter of the
year does not commit a traffic
offense as a driver.
In addition, each driver
must pass a test for the
equipment he is to operate and
he is examined as to his
knowledge of traffic laws and
signs.
Disqualified for an award
under the program will be
any participant who is AWOL
for 3 days or more, who is


involved in a collision, whose
license is revoked, who drives
recklessly, who is caught
speeding, who takes on an un-
authorized rider, whose job
performance is unsatisfactory,
who transfers or gets a job
reassignment or who termin-
ates.

With a total of approxima-
tely 47 drivers participating
in the program, the number of
drivers who qualified for an
award of Fls. 10 each quarter
of 1967 was 41, 41, 39 and 42,
respectively. For the first two
quarters of 1968, there were
41 and 38 qualifying partici-
pants, respectively.
The Safe Driving Program
helps provide Lago with a
group of drivers who are
skilled and can handle auto.
motive equipment safely.
While most of the drivers are
from Mechanical, some have a
long record of safe driving at
Lago.

The 190,800-dwt "Esso Ber-
nicia" was christened recently
at the Kieler Howaldtswerke-
Deutsche Werft A.G. in Kiel
Germany, by Mrs. M.L. Hai-
der, wife of the Chairman of
the Board of Standard Oil
Company (New Jersey).
This latest addition to the
Esso Petroleum Company fleet
is due for completion in Octo-
ber and will then become the
largest ship in the company's
fleet. She is the second of the
new generation of super tank-
ers to be named after ancient
British kingdoms. The first
was the 170,800-dwt "Esso
Mercia" which was launched
on August 18, 1967. Esso Pe-
troleum is the principal oper-
ating affiliate of Jersey Stand-
ard in the United Kingdom.
The "Esso Bernicia" will
carry crude oil to the com-
pany's refineries at Fawley
and Milford Haven, England.
With a draft of more than 60
feet, she will not be able to
berth at Fawley with a full
cargo, but the channel at Mil-
ford Haven is being dredged
to accommodate the fully la-
den ship.
Principal characteristics of
the ship are: Overall length -
1,062 feet; Breadth moulded -
154 feet, 9 inches; Depth
moulded 77 feet, 9 inches;


summer deadweight 190,800
tons; summer draft 60 feet
5-3/4 inches; maximum horse-
power 30,000; and service
speed 16.6 knots.
The "Esso Bernicia" is the
second of three 190,800-d*t
tankers which the Esso orga-
nization has ordered from Kie-
ler Howaldtswerke-Deutsche

the "Esso Malaysia," was
christened on August 15, 1967
and is now in service with
Esso Transport Inc.
These vessels are equipped
with the most modern naviga-
tion and safety equipment, in-
cluding gyro compass, echo
sounding gear, two radars, dec-
ca navigator, and radio direc-
tion finder.
The fully airconditioned
crew's quarters in the stern
feature individual cabins for
each crew member and a swim-
ming pool on the boat deck.

In July, seven employees
won cash awards for their
CYI's, totalling Fls. 300.
Receiving FIs. 60 for his idea
was Jacinto Croes, assistant
operator in Process Refin-
ing, whose suggestion called
for the installation of spare
strainers for slurry pumps.
The other six employees
each won FIs. 40 for their sug-
gestions.
F.R. Maduro, electrician in
Mechanical Electrical, sug-
gested that three existing
light stanchions be reconnect-
ed to newly installed lighting
panel at Low Octane Slop
Pump no. 1052.
H. I. H. Euson, assistant
operator Cracking, submit-
ted an idea to install a bleeder
line before the 2" main block
valve to blowdown line at
M.D. coalescers.
Another prizewinning sug-
gestion was that of Edwin R.
Croes, assistant operator, Pro-
cess Refining. His idea was
to install a valve extension on
the 4" valve located on the
slurry direct to Tar Plant.
Ricardo S. Geerman, assist-
ant operator at Acid Plant
suggested the fabrication and
installation of an extension
on the by-pass valve of the
98% Acid Controller at the
S.A.R. Plant.
An operator of Process -
Refining, Juan Yarzagaray's
idea called for the installation
of suitable guard posts for
computer cables north east of
Utility Building at no. 10
R.V.B. unit.
Franklin Robles de Medina,
acting area supervisor, Me-
chanical C & T Zone, sug-
gested to weld hinges on
header doors at Vis. Furnace
inside wall header doors.
