Lago's Sea Berth Opens 150 Construction Jobs


Some 150 jobs will be pro-
vided when the surface con-
struction stage of Lago's new
Fls. 4 million sea berth begins
this month. Scheduled for com-
pletion by June, 1969, the pro-
ject will provide jobs for weld.
ers, masons, pipefitters and ge-
neral laborers.
Underwater engineering has
been underway for more than
a year. This included aerial
photographs of wave patterns
and use of echo sounding and
other continuous measuring
devices.
The underwater work help-
ed determine the effects of
wind, waves and currents on
ships maneuvering into the sea
berth. With this phase com-
pleted, the surface construc-
tion phase now gets under-
way.
The sizable investment in an
offshore mooring facility be-
came necessary with the in-
creased congestion in the har-
bor. This resulted from, among
other things, increased tanker
cleanliness restrictions which
mean longer loading times.
In addition, because of limi-
tations of the present harbor
facilities, it was necessary to
turn away some of the larger
ships. The present harbor fa-

cilities can safely handle fully
loaded ships only up to 50,000
dwt. and ships up to 72,000
dwt. with a limited draft, the
latter only at No. 3 Finger
Pier.
Officially called a multiple
buoy sea mooring, it will be
used primarily to load fuel oil.
Ships will load from a fixed
60 by 80 feet platform at some
500 feet from shore. A trestle

Help Them Spend

A Safe Vacation
Some 18,000 school children on the island are on vacation this
month.
They spend most of their time at home or in some outdoor
activity.
We all want them to have an enjoyable time and especially a
safe vacation. Whether they are at home or out camping, swim-
ming, hiking or cycling, parents should take extra care for their
safety.
While at home, we should watch out for climbing, playing
with sharp objects, stepping on nails or broken glass, falling,
slipping and bumping into each other.
When they are camping they should be under supervision of
an adult. They should not be allowed to go swimming without
proper supervision or to cycle where there is heavy traffic.
Another precaution is not to let them play with matches, fires
or use gasoline and the like to make fires.
Let's all be extra careful.... for their safety sake.

Boekhoudt Earns MULO Diploma

Studying Even Saturdays/Sundays


"One is never too old to
learn" certainly does not ap-
ply to Raul Th. Boekhoudt of
Mechanical-Metal-Pipe. He is
only 30, but was the oldest
among thirteen students who
successfully completed the
Aruba MULO Evening School
recently. He was the only La-
go employee among the group
to complete the 4-year curri-
culum. He is the fourth Lago
employee to earn the MULO
diploma in his free time. Three
others, Angel Rojer, Girigorio
Brion and Dominico Leest
completed a similar course in
1965.
Raul, a Pipefitter 1st Class
with over 15 years of Lago
service, got interested in fur-
thering his formal education
some four years ago.
He had attended only up to
the 7th grade of a MULO
school before he began with
Lago as an apprentice in 1952.
He graduated at the Lago Vo-
cational School in 1956.
Raul signed up for the MU-
lo course in 1964. Classes were


held at the Mon Plaisir Col-
lege on Mondays, Wednesdays
and Fridays from 6:30 p.m. to
10 p.m. On the other days
he studied right after work
from 6:30 p.m. till midnight.
But during the last year, he
had to attend classes on Sa-
turdays and Sundays as well.
Raul, who is married and lives
at Paradera 82, also had to
sacrifice some of his free-time
activities. He practically had
no chance to practice football,
his favorite sport.
However, the results were
rewarding. He is now not only
a MULO-A graduate (com-
mercial curriculum), but Lago
refunded him two-thirds of
the total cost of the course un-
der the Educational Refund
Plan.
The MULO diploma is not
the final goal for Raul. He
plans to follow a Practical Ac-
counting Course and, later, the
Modern Business Administra-
tion (MBA) course and pro-
bably higher accountancy stu-
dies.

36-inch loading line, a 16-inch
loading line which can also be
used as deballasting and wash-
ing line, a 12.inch bunker line,
a 3-inch air line and a drink-
ing water, line. Parallel to the
S lines will be a 10 feet wide
road to the platform for use
by company vehicles.

which, on the offshore buoys,
rest in some 200 feet of water.
Each anchorage can withstand
a pull of 100 tons.
To prevent the ship from
bumping against the loading
platform, there are two pro-
tective dolphins, one on each
side of the platform.
The new sea berth will be
located southwest of the San
Nicolas Government dump
just off Commandeursbaai.
Here, a shore strip will be
leased for the project. A road
along the shore will connect
the offshore berth with the re-
finery area. Crews of ships
will have the same access to
shore leave as those using the
present finger piers. A park.

30-Year Service Anniversary


Henry Carter Miller was
first employed with Stand-
ard Oil Co. (N.J.) in 1938
and joined Lago in Janua-
ry, 1939 as a cadet engi-
neer II in Engineering. That
same year in July, he trans-
ferred to Technical-Lab.
Here he progressed in the
chemist and group head
positions to group head A
while assigned in the Re-
search, Experimental and
Development sections. In
September, 1961 his title
was changed to senior tech-
nologist.
He transferred to Tech-
nical-Process Engineering


has been technical coordi-
nator since February, 1963.
He completed his 30th ser-
vice anniversary on July 8,
1968.
Mr. Miller is presently
on special assignment with
Esso Research and Engi-
neering Company.

An exposition of Venezuelan
products was held in Aruba
on July 28, 29 and 30 on the
Presidential Transport T-12
"Las Aves". The ship also car-
ried some ten members of Ve-
nezuelan commerce and indus-
try. The exposition is in charge
of Dr. Regalo Campas Marti-
nez, president of the Venezue-
lan Association of Exporters.
The Expo, which drew large
crowds of visitors, was in-
augurated by Lt. Governor
O.S. Henriquez. After a stop in
Aruba, the yacht will visit
Colombia, Jamaica, Miami,
Santo Domingo, Puerto Rico,
Haiti, Barbados, Guyana and
Surinam.


The Aruban community showed great interest in the three-
day exposition held in Oranjestad harbor.
