He has plans to visit Canada
on his next vacation. In all,
he has nearly 22 years of La-
go service.

Communications, will assume York.

Ernie came to Lago in De-
cember, 1963 as an assistant
editor. He was named editor
in 1964 and Section Head.
Communications in 1965.


Before coming to Aruba, he
had been working for the
Tampa Times as a sportwriter
and columnist. He also served
as speech writer to a gover-
nor of West Virginia and the
mayor of Tampa, Florida.
A journalism graduate from
Ohio University, he has also
served with Athens Messen-
ger, Athens, Ohio; the New
York Daily News; the Char-

Four Top Suggesters in June

management dinner at the
Aruba Golf Club will be four
top Coin-Your-Ideas winners
for June. They are Alexander
Leon of Mechanical-Machinist;
Justus A. Rodriguez of Proc-
ess-Oil Movements; Anselmo
F. Semeleer of Mechanical-
Carpenter and L. V. de Kort,
of Process-Refining.
In all, they received f. 1860
in CYI awards.
The highest initial award
of this year, Fls. 1000, went
to Alexander Leon, a Mach-
inist A. He suggested to use
the older type compressors at
GAR-1 without governor con-
trol in emergency cases when
no governor parts are avail-
able.
The idea saves maintenance
time in that the compressors
will not have to be shut down.
Also, valuable gas they handle
will no longer have to be
sent to flare.
Though the idea brings
considerable savings, it will
be used for only a limited
period until the two giant
compressors, the Sputnik and
the Gemini, take over the
work of the six older type
compressors.

The next highest initial
award, Fls. 550, was earned
by Justus -A. Rodriguez, a
Marine Dispatcher in Oil Mov-
ements. His idea called for re-
locating the signal lights on
the Marine Tower to the porch
at the Marine Building and,
later when the Oil Movements
Control Center is in operation,
to the south porch of that
Control Center.

This idea will permit better
communication through signal
lights between ships and Ma-
rine personnel. It also elimin-
ates the hazards of climbing
the Marine Tower especially
during dark hours. In addition
to helping speed tanker turn-
around, the new location for
the signal lights permits more
efficient operation.

Mr. Rodriguez won Fls. 500
for his idea and a Problem
Area bonus of Fls. 50 be-
cause his idea relates to tan-
ker turnaround, the Problem
Area for June.

Anselmo F. Semeleer, a
Carpenter A, suggested to in-
stall a roller chuck for the
stern anchor of the Pile Dri-
ver barge. The-idea will per-
mit less friction, longer life
and free running of the cable.
He was awarded Fs. 170 for
this idea.

Levelman L. V. de Kort
earned a supplemental award
of Fls. 140 for his idea to in-
stall a by-pass line with a
block valve adjacent to the
visbreaker side tar safety re-
lief valve. In January, 1967 he
already earned a Fls. 100 ini-
tial award for the idea.

This by-pass line will save
operating time and enable the
operator to backflush the vis-
breaker side tar heatexchanger
while the unit is in operation.

crane operator, fireman
and oiler. Since October,
1963 he has been a tug en-
gineer in Process-Oil Mov-
ements. He commemorated
his 30th service anniversary
on July 13, 1968.

Esmond G. Chittick join-
ed Lago Commissary as a
Laborer D in April, 1937.
He subsequently worked in
Mechanical-Pipe, Marine-
Drydock, and Building &
Maintenance before he
transferred to Mechanical-
Instrument. Here he ad-
vanced to Instrumentman
A. Since February this
year, his title has been
changed to Equipment Tra-
desman A-Instrument. He
reached his 30-year service

A more modern and better
equipped Cultural Center was
re-opened June 21, offering
better facilities and more
space for cultural activities in
Aruba. Originally built in
1957/1958 at a cost of about
Fls. 450,000, the present reno-
vation amounted to Fls. 480,
000. The total investment in
the Center is over Fls. 900,000.
The expansion and improve-
ments to the building inclu-
des: a side stage plus storage
space; a ballet studio which
can be used as a mini concert
hall; three rooms for music
lessons and a new conference
room on the second floor, air-
conditioning of the auditor-
ium, stage, dressing room and


ballet studio; new equipment
for the stage, including new
lighting facilities, an orches-
tra pit and a new paint job.
The renovation project took
about 18 months to complete.
The Netherlands Government
furnished Fls. 400,000 to fin-
ance the modernization pro-
ject.
The present board of the
Aruba Theater Foundation,
which administrates the build-
ing, consists of Mrs. J. M.
Meurs, president; J. H. Beau-
jon, secretary; G. A. Krist,
treasurer; and W. T. J. Huis-
mans, S. A. Frank, V. Kock,
J. Arends, Mrs. A. Maduro and
C. Herrera, members.

Ever Heard of "Fright Second"

Before You Apply Your Brakes?


In recent TV talks as part
of a Defensive Driving Pro-
gram of Lago's Safety Sec-
tion, Traffic Police Chief ..
van Veen related some exper-
iences they had of unsafe traf-
fic in Aruba.

Many accidents, and also
serious ones, Mr. van Veen
noted, are caused because a
safe distance to the car in
front is not observed. He
pointed out that a driver with
a good reaction still needs 0.45
seconds before he actually ap-
plies his brakes. But in most
cases, drivers will react and
apply brakes after 0.50 to 0.55
or 0.60 seconds.
There is a real difference
between these fractions of a
second, as he illustrated.
If your reaction time is 0.45
of a second and you are driv-
ing at 60 km/per hour, then
before you brake effectively,
your car will travel ............
7.50 meters,
with 0.50 of a second reaction
time, your car travels 8.33
meters,
with 0.55 of a second reaction
time, your car travels 9.16
meters,
with 0.60 of a second reaction
time, your car travels 10.00
meters.
These small differences in
seconds may cost you several
hundred guilders and maybe
a lot of suffering, Mr. Van
Veen remarked.

Mr. Van Veen has one good
advice for all drivers: "When
you drive behind another car,
keep a safe distance between
you and the car m front so
that you can always stop in
good time."
A good rule of thumb here
is to keep one car length dis-
tance for every 10 km/hour
speed.
Another important point
Mr. Van Veen touched during
his talks on Tele-Aruba was
the eagerness of the public to
help in an accident. He says
it's in the best interest of the
injured not to move him or her
unless you are well-trained to
do so. Otherwise, wait for a
doctor, police or the ambulance
personnel.
Mr. Van Veen cited one
case where the victim was ly-
ing head down unconscious
and bleeding through his
mouth. When someone tried to
help by turning him face up,
the victim was drowned in his
own blood.

Lago's Most Expensive Product

Is Used as a Chemical in Paint


Among the hundreds of dif-
ferent grades of products
shipped by Lago, napthenic
acid has two distinct features:
it is a chemical and it is La-
go's highest priced product.

Unlike other products man-
ufactured by Lago which are
used as fuel, naphthenic acid
is used for making paint
driers. Because of its limited
supply on the world market,
it sells at a premium price.

Considering its end use in
paint, naphtenic acid must
pass critical color tests at La.
go before being shipped. These
special tests, the Quick Drier
Color test and the Nuodex
Phenolics test, correlate with
actual paint drier manufact-
uring and indicate whether
the product is suitable for the
customer's usage.
In the past, users of this
product encountered difficul-
ties with its color which de-
grated after shipment. How-
ever, improved treating meth-
ods have now eliminated this
problem. The new methods re-
duce to a minimum the com-
ponents phenolss) in the pro-
duct which affect its color
stability.
The first shipment of the
improved product (2753 bar.
rels) was loaded on the "Esso
Nurnberg" on June 13, 1968
bound for the U.S. east coast.
To minimize the chances of
contamination, the ship's tanks
were thoroughly washed and
inspected for cleanliness be-
fore loading.
Naphthenic acid is extract-
ed from distillates (heating
oil, kerosene) during finishing
operations. It is subsequently
treated with sulphuric acid
and then vacuum distilled.
