VOL. 29 No. 12 June 14, 1968 NSC President's Medal Awarded Quick Action of Alice Evans Saves Life of 9-Year-Old Hugo Bruinburg By applying artificial res- piration for fifteen to twenty minutes, Mrs. Alice Evans saved the life of 9-year-old Hugo Bruinburg. For this he- roic act, Mrs. Evans has been awarded the President's Me- dal of the National Safety Council. Presentation of the medal and a certificate signed by National Safety Council's President Howard Pyle was made recently by Lago Pre- sident W. A. Murray on be- half of the Council. Present on this occasion in Mr. Murray's office were Mrs. Alice M. Evans, Glenn Evans, Esso Marketing representative in Aruba, Mrs. Martha Bruin- burg, Hugo Bruinburg, Susan Evans, Lago's Safety Advisor Everett Beaujon, and Public Relations Administrator R. E. Muller. National Safety Council President's Medal In presenting the medal to Mrs. Evans, Mr. Murray re- marked: "I know you must have felt greatly relieved when you noticed the first signs of life again in Hugo. You must have had a won- derful feeling at that time, after the minutes of tension and anxiety. "Your humane deed has been appreciated in Aruba, but It also has been recognized beyond Aruba." On August 23 last year, Hugo Bruinburg and a group of other boys his age went to the Coral Strand Hotel for a swim. Unnoticed, Hugo dived into the pool but never emerged. Thanks to her alert- ness, 11-year-old Susan Evans, who noticed the boy lying lifeless on the bottom of the pool, jumped into the water and pulled the victim to the edge of the basin. Alphabetical Numbering Introduced With Issue of New Employee Badge On June 10, work started to provide all Lago employ- ees on the active payroll with a new 214"x34" rectangular identification badge. The new, lighter badge re- placing the oval badge that has been in use since 1957 has some definite im- provements. It contains the surname, the full first name and other initials with a new payroll number in front, in addition to the employee's picture. On the back, the em- ployee's birthdate and signa- ture are indicated through which the new badge can bet- ter serve as an identification card. Provided with a plastic band and clip, the badge can be conveniently attached on the left shirt pocket or other visible location in the chest area. With the new badge, also a new numbering system will be used. Each employee will get a new payroll number based on alphabetical listing of all employees and annuitants. At the same time, all annuitants will also be issued new num- bers. The numbering starts with 16 and there are 16 reserve numbers between each em- ployee's name. The highest number is 78000. The new numbering system has several advantages. The employee's payroll number will never change. He will re- tain the same number through- out his employment and as an annuitant. Whereas in the past two IBM lists had to be made, one alphabetical and one numerical, now only one list will suffice. Not only will names and payroll numbers be easier to find now, but the new numbering is more in line with the alphabetical files and listing used by other de- partments. In addition, the new payroll numbers will eli- minate the special numbering used for Thrift Plan partici- pants. To receive the new badge, the old badge must be returned. E program nobo tin algun mehora grand: A clean and safe area to work is what Lago wants for its employees. This is the objective of Lago's new Safety-House- keeping Program which went into effect June 1st. The new program contains some major improvements: First: Second: Uniform rules and guidelines have been esta- blished for judging each area as to its safety and housekeeping standing. Fourth: The inspectors' time will be used more effectively in that they will observe safety hazards, unsafe practices while making the housekeeping in- spection. Fifth: Agreed and committed to by the Process & Mechanical Departments, the new Program will have as inspectors a Process Foreman, a Mech- anical Regional Supervisor and the IR Safety Advisor. Sixth: Each area will be inspected at least once every 6 months. Seventh: The results of inspections will be submitted to the Management Committee every first week of the month. The whole refinery is divided into 42 areas; 38 are Process areas and four are Mechanical areas. The quickest way employees can cooperate in this program is by bringing safety hazards and unclean sites to the attention of their area supervisor. They should also practice good house- keeping on any job they do. It's the responsibility of supervisors to report, correct or eliminate hazardous conditions and to have their area cleaned to meet acceptable standards before the time for re-inspection. The program is intended to achieve the following: (a) Prevent accidents by maintaining safe working conditions; (b) Realize material savings on salvageable items; (c) Increase efficiency by maintaining orderly work sites. There were not only more participants and projects, but the projects themselves were generally more advanced than last year." With these words Pre- sident Murray commenced his remarks recently before pre- senting prizes at the Esso Club to the winners of this year's Science Fair. Mr. Murray was introduced by E. O'Brien, chairman of the Lago Science Fair Com- mittee, who thanked the principals, teachers and stu- dents for their efforts in ma- king the fair a success. Speaking to an audience of teachers, some 40 students from ten Aruba schools who won prizes and honorable mentions, and to press, radio and TV representatives, Mr. Murray further remarked: "You put in extra time and creative effort to upgrade the quality of the projects. As a result, your science projects attracted more than 8,000 members of the community. These people came because they felt they gained some- thing from this opportunity to share in your experience. Also, this year's judges were Impressed with the overall improvement." Commenting on today's gen- eration as "action" genera- tion, Mr. Murray said: "Ac- tion in Science is something that benefits the entire com- munity. Personally, I am very optimistic that next year's Science Fair will be even more successful because of the contribution you made this year." Mr. Murray also announced a new Science Program that will replace Lago's TV pro- gram "Combat" in July: "To satisfy the growing interest in science in the entire com- munity, we have arranged with a New York producer to participating with total of 77 projects. purchase a series called 'Science in Action'. "We at Lago hope that by sharing Science in Action with the community, perhaps more adults as well as young people will become involved in the Action in Science," he concluded. When the 1968 Lago Scien- ce Fair was announced last year, eligible participants started to make plans for their projects. The students received as- sistance from their teachers and the Lago Science Fair Committee. One little boy, however, worked all alone. He received no assistance from teachers or from Science Fair Com- mittee members. Not even helpful suggestions from his elder brother who had par- ticipated last year. But eigth-year-old Roonie Boye of P. C. Hooftstraat No. 4, San Nicolas, was determin- ed to build a project. It didn't matter that he was too young to participate in the fair. When his teacher in the third grade of the St. Augus- tinus School had discussed the fair, he had listened at- tentively and had decided that he, too,, would build a pro- ject. What's more, he already knew what his project would be. He diligently set out to work with cans, card board and paste. After several days he proudly showed his work to his parents and brothers.
