There are for- ty of them and they operate the five amateur short wave stations located in the head office of Esso Germany and its four refineries. So far only one Lago em- ployee, Sylvan Paul (Mech- anical-Shop Zone), has res- ponded to the "Diario" art- icle. Sylvan, who is president of the Aruba Amateur Radio Club, recently received ack- nowledgement of his reply from the Esso Germany club- operating frequencies and 38 addresses of other ESSO- hams, including Sylvan's, who have responded to the club's first call. They are from such countries as Venezuela, USA, Philippines, Ireland, France, England, Belgium, Germany, Greece and Aruba. The initiative of Esso Ger- many's radio amateurs opens new possibilities of more con- tact between Esso employees world-wide. To Keep up with Progress With the higher demands on human efforts imposed by tech- nological developments, every man needs to be better prepared for his career. These technological developments have been manifesting themselves in the oil industry as well. To prepare Lago employees to handle more sophisticated in- struments and equipment, a number of employees have followed a one-year advanced electronics instrumentation training. In addition, the majority of Process employees have already taken a 13-week Process Training. Other Process employees enroll in Lago-sponsored courses from International Correspondence Schools for Stationary Fire- men. Mechanical personnel receive continuous training to make them better tradesmen. They also follow Mechanical Engineer- ing courses from ICS. Training programs for supervisors give managers the modern concepts and practices of effective supervision. Techical training not available in Aruba is offered through correspondence study, programmed instruction, seminars, video- taped presentations, Latin American Training Center courses, financial assistance for study abroad, visits to courses sponsored by equipment manufacturers and attendance at technical and professional society meetings. Many employees have already received the benefit of these training possibilities. In fact, on the average each employee has followed from two to four courses at Lago. Applied learning is one sure way we can keep up with pro- gress, both as individuals and as industry. Entrenamento constante... ARUBA ESSO NEWS May 31. 1968 Mlay 31.,1968ARBESONW "Inverrosa" Visits Robert Wilkie At Pompano Beach but Gets Stuck "On the morning of May 9 I got up to find my old ship hard aground on the beach, practically in my own back- yard," Robert N. Wilkie wrote to the Aruba Esso News recently. The ship, once Lake Tanker "Inverrosa" which started hauling crude from Lake Ma- racaibo to Aruba in 1925, ran aground at Pompano Beach, Florida, close to Mr. Wilkie's home on 1850 S. Ocean Blvd. Mr. Wilkie, who was super- visor of Ship Operations in the Marine Department when he retired from Lago on March 1, 1965, had been on the "Inverrosa" at Aruba in 1926. Later, he was assigned on the "Invercorrie", "Inver- ruba" and "Inverlago". "Since more than 40 years have elapsed," says Mr. Wil- kie, "I failed to recognize my old friend at once parti- cularly since she has been converted to a freighter (in 1962) with the bridge struc- ture aft". An oldtimer in Aruba who worked under Captain R. Rodger, Mr. Wilkie recalls that the "Inverrosa", one of the shallow-draft tan- kers, was built at Belfast, Ireland, in 1925. She arrived at Aruba late that year. At that time, the crude was pumped into a depot ship at Malmok from which it was transferred to ocean tankers for delivery to U.S. ports. When the refinery went into operation in 1929, the Lake tankers proceeded direct San Nicolas harbor to charge their crude car The Lake Fleet finally farewell to Aruba in the 1950s when the Mara sandbar was made navi to much larger vessels. Mr. Wilkie further not his letter: "I had comp] lost track of the 'Inver though I had never forg her, especially in respes the many Aruban frien made in Oranjestad serving aboard her, like Beaujon and his sister 'Siki' Beaujon." He certainly looks well and hap- py with his new family," Mrs. Ralph Duggan of Illinois wrote Lago PR/IR Manager B. E. Nixon recently. This is the happy ending of the story of a stray dog, which drew interest of tour- ists at Aruba's Manchebo Beach Hotel. He was a hand- some and playful young dog, but had some bloody wounds when he came at the hotel. One of the hotel employees, Abraham Benjamin Escalona, asked the hotel manager if he could take the dog home for his children. The manager that Mrs. Duggan saw what she thought was a cruel at- tack on a friendly dog. Impressed by such treat- ment to a pet, Mrs. Duggan approached Lago to assist in getting a home for the dog. Lago's letter explained the situation and pictures were sent showing the dog was now well cared for by the Es- calona family. A second letter from Mrs. Duggan, one of the thousands of U.S. tourists who visit Aruba each year, says that "I completely underestimated the people of Aruba! It would peem that not only the clim- ate of Aruba is warm, but the hearts of the people as well." Heading the list was Pedro A. Croes, an assistant oper- ator in Process-Oil Move- ments-CR&S, who earned Fls. 100 as initial award. His idea called for making a tie-in from the discharge line of Pump 1829 and Pumps 404-406 at the Black Oil Pumphouse to the 20" fuel loop for blending any fuel tank while using Tank 247 or Tank 256. This idea will speed up ope- rations at the Black Oil Pumphouse and will save some line washing. Pedro will be a special guest at a management dinner at the Aruba Golf Club tonight during which he will be pre- sented his CYI award. (Continued on page 7) WOMEN! MWEENEW ARUBA ESSO NEWS I May 31' 1968 IL- When You Buy New Appliances, Be Safety-Wise What do you look for when buying a new portable appli- ance? Probably you're inter- ested in performance, a bar- gain price, and graceful des- ign. Before you buy, look for safety features as well. A faulty or misused small appli- ance can burn, cut or electro- cute besides toasting bread or brewing coffee. - Is the appliance the right size for family needs? A port- able appliance that is big for your family will wear bet- ter and can therefore be used safely for a longer time. - Do all parts fit together smoothly with no jutting screws or parts? Are interior and exterior surfaces rust re- sistant and relatively free from seams and crevices? electric meat cutter cortador electric pa carni The hundreds of kinds and models of small appliances make it difficult to determine the exact number of accidents involving unsafe or improperly used appliances. But Sara Mi- les, home economist in the Na- tional Safety Council's home department, notes: "Mishaps with appliances are without a doubt a significant cause of the 28,000 to 30,000 deaths and 43,000,000 or more disabling injuries from home accidents each year." Recently, the U.S. Public Health Service also named 12 types of household equipment most often involved in acci- dental home injuries. At least five of the 12 categories in- cluded portable appliances, such as electric drills and power saws, space heaters, electric skillets, appliance cords and sun lamps. Both the manufacturer and the consumer are responsible for preventing home accidents involving these small appli- ances. Reputable manufactur- ers and dealers are concerned about the design, construction, and servicing of their prod- ucts. Check the warranty or guarantee coverage of appli- ances. The UL marker indi- cates that appliances, cords, and plugs are reasonably safe for the use designed. The National Safety Coun- cil urges you to ask these questions before buying a portable appliance: - Are portable appliances well balanced for carrying and light enough to carry easily when filled with food or li- quid? A child or elderly per- son may spill an overweight appliance. - Are there waterproof cords on appliances that would be used on wet 'surfaces? Can the cord be cleaned by wiping with a damp cloth. Remember that electricity and water are a dangerous mixture. Every year some 300 Americans are electrocuted in home accidents involving everything from te- levision sets to electric gui- tars. - Does the appliance stand firmly and level without dan- ger of tipping? - Are operating and cleaning instructions provided, and are they clear and easy to follow? Consider these points before you shop and not afterwards when it may be too late. Buy carefully and then take care of your buy.
