Lang Geerman Earns Gold Medal

For Activities in Cultural Field


A Gold Medal of Honor in
the Order of Orange-Nassau
was awaderd recently to La-
go employee Laureano Geer-
man by H. M. Queen Juliana
on the occasion of Her Ma-
jesty's birthday. Laureano, or
"Lang", received this royal
distinction in appreciation of
his activities in the cultural
field.
Presentation of the royal
decoration was made on April
29, 1968 by Lt. Governor O.
S. Henriquez during a special
ceremony at the governor's
I -.L p lf


residence. Fourteen other re-
sidents of Aruba were decor-
ated on this occasion. Among
those present were govern-
ment ministers, aldermen and
Lago President W. A. Murray.
After completing military
service in 1947 as sergeant in
the Medical Corps and super-
intendent of the Army Hos-
pital in Aruba, Lang organ-
ized several groups of scouts
and rovers. He remained lea-
der of these groups for twelve
years.

cond Science Fair Monday,
May 6, at 4:30 p.m. at the
Don Bosco Club in San Ni-
colas.

O'Brien, Mr. Murray noted in
his speech that "it is very
encouraging to note that this
year's second Lago Science
Fair is much larger than it
was last year, both in the
number of students partici-


pating and in the number of
projects developed."

He continued saying: "We
hope this increased interest
in the scientific field is indi-
cative of the trend we at La-
go are trying to encourage
of having more students di-
rect their course of study in-
to the technologies of science
so that the future supply of
technical personnel will be
assured, both for the man-

promoted to shift foreman in
Process-Refining Division.

Benjamin E. (Benny) Al-
ders started with the Lago
Vocational School in 1945 as
mechanical apprentice "D".
Following his graduation
he became process helper "C"
in Process-Cracking in 1949
Between 1950 and 1952 he
worked as fireman, houseman
and levelman. He was prom-
oted to assistant operator in
1959.
Benny, who has over twen-
ty-two years with the com-
pany, had been operator in
Process-Refining prior to his
recent promotion.
In his spare time he enjoys
fishing. He is married and
has three children, a girl and
two boys.


Andresito (Chito) Croes
began his Lago career as an
LVS student in 1947.
Following his apprentice
training, he became process
helper "C" in Process Crack-
ing in 1951. In 1954 he was
promoted to process helper
"A" and in 1960 to assistant
operator in Process-Cat. & Lt.
Ends.
Before his recent promo-
tion, Chito had been operator
since 1965.
Chito has followed the 13-
week Lago Process Training
and the Effective Manage-
ment Course He also nttend-

His hobbies include playing
football and swimming. He's
married and has three daugh-
ters. On his next vacation he
plans to visit Europe.

Ten Aruba schools participated in the second Lago Science
Fair with 77 projects made by 125 students. Opened at 4:30
p.m. May 6 by Presigent W. A. Murray, the fifty-five individual
projects and twenty-two group projects were on exhibition un-
til May 7 at the Don Bosco Club in San Nicolas. In Oranjestad,
they were exhibited in Sociedad Bolivariana on May 10 and 11.

Dutch Cleanser Treatment Saves

Waterways from Shipping Waste


The 1968 LSP/ABBA Baseball competition was inaugurated
at Lago Sport Park May 8.


Clean water conservation is
an acute problem the world
over, and Holland's inland
waterways are feeling the ill
effects of some 3 million gal-
lons of shipping waste an-
nually. Although shipping is
believed to contribute less to
the pollution of Dutch water-
ways than industrial and
domestic sources, it has been
blamed for considerable wa-
ter pollution in the Nether-
lands.
Esso Nederland N.V., dur-
ing 1967, took steps to help
remedy the situation. It be-
gan installing separators on
board, or next to, 10 of its
inland waterways bunker-
ships. The equipment remov-
es polluted water from the
barges and separates oil from
the water. It keeps the oil,
which is returned for further
processing, and returns the
clean water overboard.
By the end of November,
five of the 10 installations


were completed. They were
at the shipping centers of
Dordrecht, Lobith, Botlek
area of the Rotterdam har-
bor, Maasbracht and Gronin-
gen.
Taking the waste water
from the barges during bun-
kering is a free service offer-
ed by Esso.
Prior to Esso installations
there were only two waste
liquid dumping facilities av-
ailable to barge skippers in
Holland to discharge waste
and spent oils. Most skippers
were forced to pump it over-
board, but this risked prose-
cution.
The bilge water separators
installed by Esso operate
fully automatically and se-
parate oil from the waste
water with an average effi-
ciency of 20 milligrams per
liter of cleaned water a
standard set by the German
Department of Waterways
and Shipping.

60 Managers Follow

Kepner-TregoeCourse
This month 60 management
members will have completed
a one-week Kepner-Tregoe
course in Problem Analysis
and Decision Making.
The first course started
May 6 for twenty manage-
ment members. The second
course began May 13. Both
were given by Robert H. Van
Steelant, an associate with the
firm of Kepner-Tregoe and
Associates, Inc. who are spe-
cialists in Organization Dev-
elopment and Research.
The third course for an-
other group of 20 manage-
ment members will start May
27th. It will be taught by
Harold L. Loew, who is also
an associate of the firm of
Kepner-Tregoe and Associates,
Inc.

Simon A. Wever has been
in Lago's service almost 20
years. Also an ex-Lago Voc-
ational School student, he
started to work as process
helper "C" in Process-Cat. &
Lt. Ends after graduating in
1952. He progressed to assis-
tant operator in 1959.
Simon was promoted to
process technician in 1963. He
has taken the Basic Compu-
ter Theory Course and has al-
so participated in the 13-week
Process Training program
sponsored by Lago.
An avid football fan, he
enjoys watching a good game
in his leisure time. His other
hobbies include gardening and
reading.
He is married and has
three sons. On his next vaca-
tion he intends to visit the
U.S.A.

Former LVS Student Juan Kusmus

Is Senior Inspector in Holland


Visiting Aruba and Lago
recently while on vacation
was Juan L. N. Kusmus, a
former LVS graduate of the
1943 class. He worked at the
PCAR when he left Lago in
1953.
Juan is now a senior con-
struction inspector employed
for four years with the Hol-
land branch of Bechtel In-
ternational Co., an industrial
design and engineering com-
pany from Califonia.
After arriving in Holland
in 1953, Juan joined Chicago
Bridge & Iron Company as a
welder. During his ten years
with Chicago Bridge, he
worked in the hot deserts
(1260F) of Kuwait, Persia,
Bahrein, Saudi Arabia. He
also worked in many Euro-
pean countries.
Being conversant in sever-
al languages, such as French,
German, Spanish, Italian,


English and Dutch, he had
also been a welding instruc-
tor and welding supervisor.
In 1960, he helped install an
atomic reactor in Italy. He
also worked on the installa-
tion of thousands of miles of
natural gas lines in many
provinces of Holland. Most
recently, he was assigned on
the construction of a marine
crude oil terminal at Rotter-
dam's Europoort for Mobile
Oil.
Juan still finds time to
practice his favorite hobbies
like photography, auto mech-
anic and cabinet making. An
elder brother of Moi Kusmus
of Technical-Process Engin-
eering and of Amado Kusmus
of Process-Refining, Juan is
married in Rotterdam and
has six children. After hav-
ing been away from Aruba
for fifteen years, Juan says
"Aruba is beautiful as ever".
