Whereas the material of the course has been planned for a 28-month study, Bill completed the course in April this year, or in about one year. The course is schedul- ed for completion in May, 1969. To achieved this, he at ti- mes spent up to 8 hours per day studying at home while off from shift work. The re- ward for his efforts was 93% of A's and the rest B's for his lessons. But, in most cases, these acci- dents could have been prev- ented if someone had been more alert, if the equipment had been checked or if some- one had reported a hazardous condition in time. Your senses can help you discover safety hazards. SIGHT: Watch where you're going, whether in a car or on foot. Look around and see if there is anything that might cause an accident. Watch what you're doing. Read instructions carefully before using tools, read la- bels, observe regulations. HEARING: Listen for un- usual sound in your car or any other equipment you're using for any defects or maladjustment. SMELL: You can smell smoke, gas or any other odor that might cause fire or explosion. TOUCH: You can touch equipment and feel unusual heat, vibrations or parts missing. Modernization of Finger Piers Will Improve Tanker Turnaround In a few months, work will start on Finger Pier No 2, the first of the three Lago Fin- ger Piers to be modernized. The Pier Modernization Project includes new loading facilities for Finger Pier 1, 2 and 3 and the installation of shore piping. Some of the major work involved on each pier are: - Removing the existing loading structures and flexible rubber hose handl- ing arrangements. - Installing ten new, coun- terbalanced all metal loading arms together with support structure. - Installing a new piping manifold. - Replacing existing moor- ing bollards with modern quick release mooring hooks. On shore, a new 36-inch fuel oil line will be installed running from the Loading Pumphouse over the skyway and along the shore to the piers. The project will help de- crease tanker turnaround time by permitting higher loading rates because of more efficient metal loading arms and the larger fuel oil line. It also enables faster ship berthing and unberthing through the use of the new quick release hooks and the new loading arms. Each of the loading arms will be fitted with a quick coupling device. The first phase of the pro- ject consisting of moderniza- tion of the No. 2 Finger Pier and installation of shore pip- ing has been awarded to Con- tractor McKee. Prefabrication work on shore piping started early this month. The No. 2 Finger Pier is expected to be out of service for about six weeks commen- cing mid July for moderniza- tion work. The overall pro- ject on the three piers, cost- ing about $2.5 million, will require about one year to complete. Project manager is Allan Temple while Alex van de Ven is project engineer. E project aki lo reduci e tempu cu tankeronan mester ta den haf pa carga y des- carga, haciendo posibel pa carga zeta den bapornan mas rapidamente y mas eficaz cu e brazanan di metal y tubo- nan mas hanchu pa zeta. Tambe lo ta posibel pa traca y los bapornan usando e haaknan nobo pa mara y los barcunan, y e brazanan nobo pa pomp zeta door di nan. Before he left Lago, Alex had been acting supervising engineer in the Crude Processing & Oil Movements Section of Technical-Process Engineer- ing Division. During his six to nine months with ERE, he will be assigned to one of the Proc- ess Engineering Design Sec- tions in the Petroleum-New Investments area. Alex, who holds a B.S. de- gree in chemical engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology, started with La- go six years ago. He has been a senior en- gineer since March 1, 1967. Last year he acted for sever- al months as Supervising Chemist in Lab-Inspection Section. During his stay in the U.S., Alex will be accompanied by his wife and two children. Lago Assignment by Ted Burton, Mechanical and Long Range Planning. Jack came to Lago in No- vember, 1964 on a one-year loan and later transferred to the Lago organization. He was first assigned to the Oil Movements task force as chairman to develop inform- ation for a long range plan. Later he helped developed the budget items for the Oil Movements project and was then named project manager. A remarkable thing about his Lago career was that Jack was able to see a ma- jor project through from the idea stages to the final stages. While at Lago, Jack did a lot of business traveling in connection with the Oil Mov- ements project. He has been off the island for about 50% of the time he was here. To obtain information about communications systems and progress in the field of elec- tronics, he visited several missile installations in the U.S. At the NASA center in Houston, he saw the compu- ter simulation of the planned Gemini flight. This was one in a series of tests. It was in one of the later Gemini tests that three astronauts were killed. One of the areas Jack will be dealing with on his new job is future maintenance plans and personnel training in connection with fuel oil desulphurization equipment to be installed at Amuay. tA The Aruba Jaycees are serious with their San Nicolas Clean- up Campaign. The new arrangement means that the employees concerned receive their pay eight hours sooner and actu- ally gain a full day in day- light time.
