aA a Esso Lago Oil & Transport Co., Ltd. 12m VOL. 29, No. 6 March 22, 1968 Lago Veterans Norris, Hatfield, Deese Assist in PCAR Turnaround Not many Lago veterans from the U.S. or other coun- tries come back to Aruba or Lago to work. They usually come back only to visit the island. But three Lago veterans are back in Aruba as foremen of Chicago Bridge & Iron Com- pany, to assist in the PCAR turnaround, which started February 1. W. H. (Bill) Norris, who re- tired in July, 1965 as Refin- ing Division Superintendent, now works at the PCAR turn- around as maintenance fore- man. Bill had 35 years of La- go service when he retired. There are also two Insula- tion foremen working on the PCAR who had worked in La- go's Mechanical Department. They are A. "Doc" Hatfield and Walter E. Deese. "Doc" had been a zone foreman in Mechanical-Mason and retired in January, 1960 after 18 years of service. Walter had 1 ' been a Mason foreman. He left Lago in October, 1961 af- ter nearly 24 years of service. For all three Lago annuit- ants, it's the first time they're back in Aruba since they left Lago. Their job assignment here also gives them a chance to renew old friendship. Lago Policemen Sport NewMatching Uniform Recently Lago Policemen have been supplied with a new set of uniforms. The new attire of the policemen has a more matched color: frost- ed black shirts, dark gray Terlenka pants with match- ing caps. The previous uni- form included light gray shirts. The fourteen dozen shirts and pants and about three dozen caps were ordered from the clothing industry "Cambes (Continued on page 2) Three Lago annuitants from the U.S. also help on PCAR turnaround. M. de Cuba Photographer A Shorter Waq To Accidents? How often do we take short cuts which we later regret? How often do we resolve not to take risks again and then go ahead and commit the same errors ? Living in an atomic age, the stress is on speed and action. We try to produce more, accomplish more and to be more effi- cient. However, we should never forget to stress the importance on SAFETY. We should at all times demonstrate our mental maturity by being competent and safe employees. In every day life, on the job, as well as off the job, we are in constant motion, going from one place to the other. The decisions we make to save time, sometimes mere seconds, can cause us serious injury, maybe even our lives. Yet we go through life in a hurry, without thinking. Although most of the time we escape injury, the danger is always there. Short cuts are dangerous, avoid them! They may be a shorter way to accidents. Caminda Mas Corticu Pa Desgracia? Service Anniversaries 30 Years r March 22 1968 ARUBA ESSO NEWS I IBM's 1410 Computer System Used at Lago Dumped Into Sea Could you imagine a whole computer system being dump- ed into the sea? It did hap- pen in Aruba on Friday, March 8. The whole 1410 computer system owned by IBM, which has been in use at Lago since early 1962 until February 1 this year, was committed to the blue waters of the Carib- bean. In all, six large units with accessory cables were thrown into the sea at Lago's dumping site west of the San Nicolas Harbor. The system included: six magnetic tape units; three processing units; a high speed printer; a reader-punch; one console typewriter and two control units and accessory wiring and cables. When installed, the 1410 computer system had cost about half a million dollars. The dumping proves that even the most sophisticated systems become obsolete and serve no purpose when super- seded by more advanced elec- tronics equipment. The 1410 computer system has been replaced by IBM's 360 computer system at Lago. One after one the IBM 1410 computer units roll into the Caribbean sea. Un tras di otro e computador 1410 di IBM su aparatonan ta lora cai den Mar Caribe. Lago's Old Hasler Postage Meter Goes to Postal Museum as Antique Recently Lago donated its old Hasler postage meter to the Aruba Postal Administra- tion. The machine will be used as an antique for a postal mu- seum to be set up in the fu- ture. The presentation was made by Jim Lambert, head of Comptroller's-Office Services Section, to Postmaster J. C. Quast at Lago's Post Office in the General Office Build- ing. The Hasler postage machine had been in use at Lago for more than twenty-five years and was replaced early this year by a new and more effi- cient Pitney-Bowes postage metering machine. Tempo cu el tabata install, e sistema computador 1410 a costa como mitar million dol- lar. E bentamento afor di e apa- ratonan aki ta proba cu hasta systemanan mas modern ta bira bieuw y no ta sirbi mas ora nan ser surpass pa otro equipo electronic mas avanya. PrinsBernhard 6 ARUBA ESSO NEWS March 22, 1968 Oil Can Be Used As Rainmaker To Make Arid Areas Productive The famines that killed 10 million people in Bengal in 1769 and 1770 were seen by Thomas Malthus as a warn- ing that humanity was out- running its food base and fac- ing disaster. His famous warning, issued in 1798, was premature, for though famin- es continued as they do even today in densely populated areas, mankind's food base has widened. The opening up of new lands in the Western Hemisphere and the introduction of better agricultural techniques have not only enabled mankind to survive but have increased humanity's numbers from the 800 million of Malthus' day to the current world population of just under four billion. Today there are new warn- ings that man is outrunning his food supply. But this time there are no new lands to dis- cover. The world population is expected to double to seven billion by the end of the cen- tury, unless some steps are taken to reduce the rate of the population explosion. New sources of food and new methods of production are also needed to assure ade- quate supplies. A large area of the world that could produce food for millions needs rainfall and other sources of moisture to become productive. These arid lands are being studied by scientists of Esso Research and Engineering Company who believe that oil can make it rain. The principle is simple enough. An arid area, usually a coastal region, is coated with asphalt. This absorbs solar heat. Like a city street or parking lot, it gets 20 to 30 degrees hotter than the surrounding earth. This creates an updraft as the hot air rises. Moist winds are drawn in off the water and carried upward causing condensation. Clouds form and release rain downwind from the asphalt-coated patch. The idea, now about to un- dergo major tests, proves out in small tests and in compu- terized calculations. There is also much man-made and na- tural-science evidence to rein- force the theory. Masses of rain clouds char- acteristically from off the lee- ward shores of Pacific and Caribbean islands. Large forest fires and in- cendiary bombings have pro- duced rainstorms by the effect of their updrafts. Big cities which are really "islands" of heat and big industrial plants are often associated with heavier local rainfall. Moun- tains, by forcing warm air to rise over their peaks into cooler altitudes, produce rain clouds. According to calculations, a large asphalt-coated tract of from 20 to 100 square miles could provide 20 to 30 inches of rain over an area two or three times the size of the "black island." The cost of such rainmaking would run around $75 an acre, with an- nual maintenance costs of about $10 per acre. Large irrigation projects in Egypt and Australia now cost $300 to $600 an acre. Asphalt rainmaking would thus be more economical than present methods, and oilmen believe it can be made more depend- able, too.
