February 23, 1968 ARUBA ESSO NEWS 7 Rare "Djuku" Plant Grown Here Produces Seed Used as Charm A very rare plant has pro- duced seeds at Mabon 13. Planted by Dominico Ras in November, 1966, the plant started producing long pods containing three round-like seeds of about one inch in diameter seven months later. The seed is called "djuku". The botanical name of the plant is Caesalpinia Ciliata. The "djuku" belongs to the Papilionaceae family. What makes this vine-like plant remarkable is that the seeds can be polished to a sheen and be made into beautiful pendants for ladies' bracelets. They can also be studded with gold ornaments or initials to serve as souvenirs of Aruba. The "djuku" is not an Aru- ba plant. The seeds wash a- shore along Aruba's east and north coast. That's where Do- minico found one and put it into the ground at his home. To his surprise and that of his folks, the seed grew into a plant and began producing long pods studded with prick- les. When fully dried, the "dju- ku" seed has a dark brown to orange-yellow color. Although it's probably the first time the "djuku" is growing here, the seed is used to make charms in Mexico and Latin American coun- tries. This is Dominico Ras of plant, which is perhaps Mabon 13, who sowed this "djuku" the only one grown on the island. Esaki ta Dominico Ras di Mabon 13, kende a plant e mata di djuku aki, cu podiser ta e unico mata cu a nace na Aruba.
