Rare "Djuku" Plant Grown Here

Produces Seed Used as Charm

A very rare plant has pro-
duced seeds at Mabon 13.
Planted by Dominico Ras in
November, 1966, the plant
started producing long pods
containing three round-like
seeds of about one inch in
diameter seven months later.
The seed is called "djuku".
The botanical name of the
plant is Caesalpinia Ciliata.
The "djuku" belongs to the
Papilionaceae family.
What makes this vine-like
plant remarkable is that the
seeds can be polished to a sheen
and be made into beautiful
pendants for ladies' bracelets.
They can also be studded with
gold ornaments or initials to
serve as souvenirs of Aruba.

The "djuku" is not an Aru-
ba plant. The seeds wash a-
shore along Aruba's east and
north coast. That's where Do-
minico found one and put it
into the ground at his home.
To his surprise and that of
his folks, the seed grew into
a plant and began producing
long pods studded with prick-
les.

When fully dried, the "dju-
ku" seed has a dark brown
to orange-yellow color.
Although it's probably the
first time the "djuku" is
growing here, the seed is used
to make charms in Mexico
and Latin American coun-
tries.

This is Dominico Ras of
plant, which is perhaps

Mabon 13, who sowed this "djuku"
the only one grown on the island.

Esaki ta Dominico Ras di Mabon 13, kende a plant e mata
di djuku aki, cu podiser ta e unico mata cu a nace na Aruba.

Mata Raro di Djuku Creciendo Aki

Ta Produce Semiya como Adorno

Mrs. Ras shows pod with three "dJuku" seeds, with plant in
background at her home, Mabon 13.

Sra. Ras ta munstra balanja cu tries dJuku, cu e mata banda
patras na su cas na Mabon 13.

Un mata masha raro a pro-
duci sernma na Mabon 13. Do-
minico Ras a plante na No-
vember 1966, siete luna des-
pues e mata a cuminza pro-
duci balifia largu cu den cada
un tres semja casi rond6 di
un duim di diametro.
E semUa aki jama djuku.
Su number cientifico ta Ca-
esalpina Ciliata. Djuku ta
pertenece na e famiia di mata
Papilionaceae.
Loke ta haci e mata aki
mas notable ta, cu e sem4a-
nan por word lombrd bunita,
y nan ta bira un adorno pa
pulsera di damas. Tambe pla-
td sa pone den nan adorno di
oro of initial di number di
hende, como recuerdo di Aru-
ba.

Djuku no ta un mata di
Aruba. Lama ta trece e me-
minanan na tera na costa pa-
riba y nord di Aruba. Ta ey-
nan Dominico a hanja un dju-
ku y a plante den curt di su
cas. Pa sorpresa dl dj6 mes
y su famia, e semia a crece
bira un mata cu awor ta pro-
duci balila grandi jena dl
sumpinja.

Ora e ta completamente se-
cu, e semga di djuku ta han-
ja un color bruin scur te geel-
oranje.

Aunke probablemente esaki
ta promer bez cu djuku ta
crece aki, na Mexico y Ame-
rica Latina nan ta usa e se-
mta pa traha adorno cu nd.
