Lago Helps Piedra Plat Youth Group

Present Activities at Social Center

Recently, President W. A.
Murray presented a donation
to Reverend J. A. Visser of
the Protestant Youth Group
of Aruba during a visit to the
Piedra Plat Youth Center. The
youth group will use this as-
sistance for meeting the costs
of operating their social and
recreational center which is
under the direction of Rever-
end Visser.
Presenting the donation,
Mr. Murray commented on
the excellent work being done
by Reverend Visser and his
associates, adding "there is no
doubt that the work being
done by the Protestant Youth
Group is of great value to the
youth of Aruba and will help
them become more construc-
tive citizens. That is an im-

portant asset for any commu-
nity."
Sponsored by the Dutch
Reformed Church, the Piedra
Plat Youth Center caters to
the social needs of the Prot-
estant community of Santa
Cruz and Piedra Plat. Other
groups of young-people also
use the facilities regularly.
The center provides enter-
tainment, such as movies,
games, musical festivals, lect-
ures, stage plays, camps. So
far this year, three schools
have used the center as a
camping site. Also, the Dutch
Marines, Teacher's College,
and Protestant Chris tian
School have had their recrea-
tional and educational week-
ends there.

PRESIDENT W. A. Murray (r) hands over check to Rev. J. A. Visser
to assist work of Piedra Plat Youth Center.

Courses at Training Center in Lima

Attended by Over
One hundred and thirty-
four Lago employees have
participated in courses at the
Latin American Training Cen-
ter since its inception in 1957.
Most of them took courses in
the technical area, such as
refinery economics, process
design, process economics and
mechanical design, while some
followed courses in problem
analysis and decision making.
Since the center got start-
ed, 6.6 of all candidates par-
ticipating in all courses came
The Centro, as it is com-
manly called in Latin Ameri-
ca, is supported on a coopera-
tive basis by seven Efso Latin
American affiliates. Each af-
filiate has a representative in
a Management Committee
which directs the activities of
the Cntro. Lago's representa-
tive is President W. A. Mur-
ray.
The Centro, located in Li-
ma, Peru, caters to the train-
ing needs of the Eso Latin
American affiliates and offers
course in three broad cate-
goris: technical, marketing
and miscellaneous. Courses
offered are common to the

participating affiliates and
are too expensive for any par-
ticular company to sponsor on
its own for its employees.
Members of the teaching
staff at the Centro are select-
ed from the participating af-
filiates and Jersey's domestic
affiliates. So far in the his-
tory of the Centro, Lago has
provided 5% of the total num-
ber of instructors.

by the Centro. Two of these
courses covered refinery eco-

Annuitants A prcpat
Deing Kept Up To Date
Through Company Paper
A survey conducted recent-
ly among 650 annuitants who
left Lago more than five
years ago indicated their in-
terest in continuing to receive
the Aruba Esso News.
Says one of them: "...over
the years my family enjoyed
reading them to me as well as
our friends. They are the only
direct link of communication
between Lago and me to keep
me informed of the progress,
changes and improvements of
the company."
Another annuitant remarks
that the "Esso News is pretty
well worn after circulating to
four different addresses in the
U.S."
As remarked by an annuit-
ant, the Aruba Esso News is
also used in the 9th grade
Spanish class at a U.S. high
school.
After working for 29 years
and 9 months, one remarked,
"I should have some sort of
interest in the happenings of
the company and its prog-
ress."
Letters were sent to Euro-
pe, Australia, New Zealand,
North and South America.

IBM 360 Offers More Speed, Flexibility

Lgo has installed a new
IBM System 860 computer for
greater flexibility and speed
in solving its daily informa-
ti hand problems
The computer arrived in
September and wll replace
1410 equipment which Lago
has been using since 1961.
This replacement is part of
the company's continuing ef-
forts to modernize its overall
operations.
The IBM 360 consists of
eleven units, including those
to store information, to proe-
es information, to get the in-
formation in and out of com-
puters and to communicate
with display stations at rem-
ote points.
It provides emulation,
which makes it possible to use
1410 programs on the 360
computer until conversion is
completed.
A more compact system, it
operates at a lower cost per
job and requires less mainten-
ance. Because of its miniature
transistors (micro-circuitry),
it calculates at the speed of
one billionth of a second.
In operation, no interrup-
tion is usually necessary be-
cause the machine can handle

more than one program sim-
ultaneously. Unlike the 1410
which operates on the basis of
firt-in-first-out, this new
system gives priority to the
information more urgently re-
quired.
One other significant fea-
ture of this system is its dir-
ect access storage. This is the
ability to use magnetic disks
in addition to magnetic tapes
and punched cards. The disks
give direct access to the in-
formation required without
the searching operation nec-
essary in cards or tapes.
The new installation meets
the need for increased flexibi-
lity in the kinds of informa-
tion necessary to operate our
business. This system is cap-
able of serving all depart-
ments, including programs for
Public and Industrial Rela-
tions Department.
Within the past five years,
technical computing has in-
creased to approximately 50%
of the total time and is stead-
ily going up. The system 360
will help reduce manual cal-
culations in the Technical
area and eliminate much pa-
per work. Most importantly,
it will free engineers for more

Plans for the future include
the use of display tubes sim-

remote locations. These would
be linked electronically with
the IBM 360. This visual sys-

Henflih Fradl and Rene Wolf,
systems analysts, spent a

IBM education centers in Phil-

Boilers Are Overhauled Regularly

For Safe And Efficient Service
A major overhaul of a Powerhouse boiler actually
means repairing, renewing and cleaning the "bowels"
inside a building 25 feet wide, 30 ft. long, 30 ft. high.
Enclosed in this huge box are a maze of pipes and
two 25-feet long drums, 5 feet in diameter with 2%2-
inch steel walls. The steam drum is at the top and a
mud drum is at the bottom of the boiler. Another
important part inside the boiler is the superheater,
which heats the steam from 540" F. to 7500 F.
The major overhaul, now being made on the No. 3
boiler in Powerhouse No. 1 after ten years' operation,
includes repairing or renewing the front wall, the
side wall, roof and floor, baffles, 144 superheater
tubes ani other tubes and some 50 valves. Cleaning
and removal of scale deposits are done through chem-
ical and mechanical cleaning. To handle such a job,
some 20 men work night and day. Coordinator for
all this work is Mario Croes of Mech.-Engineering.
The boilers are also submitted to general inspec-
tions by a government inspector every two years. A
complete check is made, including safety equipment
such as safety valves, water gauges, and alarms. In
addition, every eight to twelve months, the-boilers
are removed from service for ten days for furnace
cleaning and checking of all safety equipment.
During and after a major overhaul or regular in-
spections, the boilers have to pass a 540 lbs. per
square inch test by a government inspector. Before
that, Lago inspectors put the boiler to the rigid test
of 690 lbs. per square inch. A boiler normally oper-
ates at 410 lbs. per square inch and 7500 F. steam
outlet temperature. The gas temperature within the
furnace, however, may reach as high as 1800 F. At
this temperature, the steel tubes actually would
start softening, were it not for the lower tempera-
ture water and steam flowing inside these tubes.
To ensure safe operation, there are three safety
valves on the steam drum, which pop at 465 lbs. per
square inch. Another safety valve is on the super-
heater which is set to blow at 435 lbs. per square
inch. Other instruments to watch are the two water
level gauges on the steam drum.
The boiler walls consist of an outer shell of y%"
steel, caposite insulation, fire bricks and fire tiles.
The steam produced by the boiler is obtained by
heating some 6,000 barrels of fresh water per day
pumped at a pressure of 530 lbs. per square inch.

THIS STEAM drum with y2V-inch steel wall located 30
feet high has three safety valves and water level gauges.
E STIEM drum aki di 2 -duim di staal diki na 30 pia
haltu tin valve di seguridad y medidor dl nivel di awa.

THIS MAZE of piping is connected to the steam drum.
E LABIRINTO di tubo aki ta conecta cu drum di stiem.

A "TIME tunnel"? No, it's the inside of the mud drum
of boiler No. 3 some 25 feet below the steam drum.
UN "TUNNEL di tempo"? No, e ta paden di e drum pa
lodo di Boiler No. 3 y ta 25 pia bao di e drum di stiem.

The two Lago Powerhouses have nine boilers.
They supply 850,000 pounds of high pressure steam
(410 p.s.i.) per hour which is used to operate the
turbo-generators and auxiliary equipment in the
powerhouses. After serving.this purpose, a Jower
pressure steam of about 150 p.s.i. leaves the turbo-
generators for use in the refinery units. The steam
is condensed and this water is reused in the boilers.

and inspection work on Powerhouse boiler Noe. 3 & 4.
