Lago Oil &Transport Co., Ltd. Lago Oil & Transport Co., Ltd. a-m *- a VOL. 28, no. No 0191ww 7- THIS DERRICK tower will be used for complete turnaround of PCAR scheduled for February next year. E TOREN y grua aki lo word usi pa reparation complete di PCAR Is Erected by Chicago Bridge Men A hole dug near the PCAR in August, poured with con- crete into a "first base", is now the support of the 307- foot high derrick crane instal- led south of the Cat Cracker by Chicago Bridge Men. Only the Powerhouse No. 2 smoke- stack rises a little higher: 315.6" high. This derrick crane will be the "main arm" to handle most of the heavy equipment for the turnaround of the PCAR, which is sched- uled to start in February next year. A gang of fourteen men were responsible for erecting the 25-ton capacity crane. The man who did most of the climbing to the highest point is the Brazilian Miguel Piza- neri, a field erection foreman of Chicago Bridge. Another field erection foreman who worked on the project is Clyde Waver. Although it's the first time Miguel worked in Aruba, he gsay he tackle many similar jobs In Brail and elsewhere during his fifteen years with hicago Bridge. He likes swimming and fishing most, but did some mountain climb- ing in Brail. The derrick cranw onlstsu ot'two section. Holding the derrick crane in place are four double sets of one-inch guy wires anchor- ed at some distance in all four covers of the wind, secured at the tower and at the mast top. The mast and boom on the rotating "second base" were lifted in place from inside the square tower. The crane, which is controlled by an American hoist, is operated by Julio Dorothal. In the United Kingdom, Es- so Petroleum Company, Ltd. has placed orders for four ships, two with the Swan Hunter Group on Tyneside and two with Harland and Wolff in Belfast These com- bined orders represent the largest tonnage placed at one time in the United Kingdom by any oil company. - . In Denmark, orders have been placed by Esso Trans- port Company for two of the ships to be built at the Odense Steel Shipyards in Denmark, and one, t the Verolme Yard in Rotterdam, Holland, in ad- dition to the' orders for two ail-r new Eao vessels rec- ently announced. These orders, including a previous order for three sim- ilar ships to be built by A. G. All the new Eso tankers will follow the same general specifications: 1,100 feet long, 170 feet beam, 84 -feet deep with a draft of 63 feet, and with an operating speed of some 15 knots. They will be engaged in international trade, transporting crude oil from Persian Gulf ports to Europe. These tankers are .the larg- est single-screw ships ever constructed and all will have the bulbous bow designed by Eso Research and Engineer- ing Company to improve speed and economy of fuel con- sumption. Head Comes First, But Protection Goes Down To Toes For the worker of Lago, no part of the body is overlook- ed a- far as protective equip- ment is concerned. Such per- sonal equipment are available for protecting head and face, hand and arm, body, foot and leg, respiratory and hearing organs. An all important item is the safety hat In view of present conditions of continuing over- head work on refinery units and the increase in construe- tion work throughout the ref- Inery and tankfarm areas, Lago's safety hat regulation has been revised. Lago employees must now adhere to the following rules: "Safety hats must be worn at all times when within the Lago industrial area, as well as in any other locations where there is a falling object hazard. "Safety hats need not be worn inside vehicles, offices and utility buildings, lunch shelters, controlrooms, shops or storage areas, unless lifts or overhead work is in pro- grees." In the past years, Lago had supplied various types of saf- ety hats First there was the fiber hat. Painted in various colors, these helmets denoted different crafts. After these, employees had been using alu- minum hats. The aluminum hats have now been replaced by the new plastic safety hats, which are supplied in white. Other equipment to protect head and face are the shields or hoods for welders and saf- ety glasses and goggles for tradesmen whose work req- uires their use. There are var- ious type of goggles: The spec- tacle-type goggles to guard against heavy and moderate impacts and rubber type gog- gles for protection against splashes of injurious liquids, vapors, gases and dust In ad- dition, there are special gog- gles to protect welders against injurious light rays, such as from acetylene burning and arc welding. For protection against ef- fects of chemicals, oils and from heat, workers are prov- ided with gloves. Protective sleeves are also available for protection against molten me- tal in welding and burning operations and against hot tar or asphalt. For body protection, aprons or even coveralls for protect- ing the full body are furnish- ed for specific jobs. Another important protect- ive item is the safety shoe. Where necessary, leggings made of heavy canvas or leather are provided to protect workers against burns from molten metal, welding and burning operations. Also rub- ber boots and gloves are sup- plied for work with corrosive chemicals. The respiratory organs are protected by means of gas masks and respirators, dep- ending on the type of work. for work at an altitude or whenever a fresh air hose mask is used in tanks, excava- tions, condenser boxes, a saf- ety belt must be used. When working on or around deep waters, employees are furn- ished with life belts. Protection of the hearing organ is provided by a new type "cotton-down" personal ear protector, which replaces the ear plugs.
