Prevent Fires,

Before They Hurt...
Fires usually don't start by themselves. They are caused -
either by actions of people or by some conditions where fuel,
heat and oxygen may combine to start a fire;
At home, it is usually children who cause most of the fires.
Matches or anything that may start a fire should be kept out
of children's reach. However, adults also can cause home fires
by forgetting to turn off stoves or to unplug electric irons or
toasters
SOn the job, employees should be conscious of those operations
that may cause a fire. But in all job situations, you should ob-
serve the necessary safety precautions. For instance, wherever
required obtain the necessary hot work permits.
Conditions that may lead to a fire should be reported right
away. Oil spills and leakages, flammable liquids in open con-
tainers and exposed electrical wires are all particularly dang-
erous
. The task of preventing fire is not only the duty of the Fire
Department personnel. Every employee can help prevent fires
from starting by reporting fire hazards. It's always better and
les costly to prevent fires than to put them out

To Lago After Completing
Assignment in Rotterdam
Another employee to com-
plete an overseas loan assign-
ment is Ronald A. van Hees-
wijk, who returned to Lago
on September 25.
Ron, whose assignment
took him to Esso Nederland
Refinery in Rotterdam, spent
eighteen months in their Eco-

His work there included fin-
ancial forecasting.
A graduate in chemical en-
gineering from the Hogere
Technische School in Gronin-
gen, Netherland, Ron joined
Lago in 1963.
A year later' he went on
loan to Aruba Chemical In-
dustries where he spent four
months as process engineer
in the Ammonia Plant. He al-
so trained A.C.I. operators on
the principles of combustion.
Since his return to Lago he
is working in the Technical-
Economics '& Planning Div-
ision.

The first Lago/ICS Mech-
anical Engineering Course be-
gan in 1963. Victor and Ra-
mon belong to a second group
of Mechanical employees who
started this course in Sep-
tember, 1965. The first par-
ticipant of this group to rec-
eive his diploma was Federico
Farro, Engineering Division.
Besides dedicating much of
their spare time studying,
Ramon and Victor also work-
ed together on their assign-
ments during the lunch hour.
Several engineers in their sec-
tion assisted them, whenever
required. When each assign-
ment was completed, Lago's
Training Division handled the
mailing for them.
Under the Lago Educatio-
nal Refund Plan, Lago ab-
sorbs two-third of the cost of
the training while the em-
ployee is required to pay on-
ly one third of the cost
Both men are Lago Voca-
tion School graduates. Victor
has participated in the Lago

Thernal insulation requirements for the Harvey Alumina and
Hess Oil Refinery projects in St. Croix from October 1965
to December 1966. As resident project manager I employed
several Arubans as insulation mechanics under our U.S. De-

ed by Nilo Swaen of Public &
Industrial Relations, who sug-
gested that the asbestos fence

count House" be extended
with approximately six more
asbestos sheets. This would
prevent papers from being
blown through Lago's fence
into the pipe alley south of
the parking lot. The accumu-
lation of paper there, would
create a fire hazard. This idea
also helps maintain "good
housekeeping" in that area.

vide covers for all emergency
switches and Motor Operated
Valve switches in PCAR Con-

Largest Crude Tank Ever Built at Lago

Dwarfs Surrounding Tanks Eight Times


The first tank to be com-
pleted in the Oil Movements
Project is also the largest at
Lago. This gigantic crude re-
servoir, Tank No. 914, was-put
into service September 22,
1967.
This tank is so large, that
two regular 80,000 bbl. tanks
had to be taken down to make
room for it. Located north-
west of the Gasoline Pump-
house, the tank has a diame-
ter of 250 feet and is 76 feet
high, including a four-foot
extension for its floating roof.
With a capacity of 637,000
barrels, the tank has the stor-
age space equivalent to about
eight regular tanks in the
tank farm.
Slightly more than two
ships are required to fill
the tank. The first barrel of
crude was pumped into the
new tank by Esso Brussels at
about 5:30 p.m. The Esso Ro-
ma and the Esso Maracaibo
each discharged part of their
load into the tank until it
was filled.
Instead of manual opera-
tion, a button was pushed
and an air-operated valve ac-


tuator started the discharge
of the crude into the tank. At
present 1400 Ledeen air-oper-
ated valves are being installed
throughout the refinery.
As part of the Oil Move-
ments Project, four fuel tanks
and another crude tank are
being constructed.
Not as large as Tank No.
914, the crude tank will have
a storage capacity of 500,000
barrels. It is expected to be
completed in January 1968.

Firefighters for Doing "Wonderful Job"


Friday night, September
29, the volunteer firefighters
and their wives were honored
at a dinner dance for their
Contribution towards fire-
fighting at Lago.
Seated for the "rijsttafel",
the volunteer firefighters,
their wives and guests were
welcomed by vice President H.
L. Siegele who mentioned that
from what he had observed
during three fires, the men did
a "wonderful job."
Process Manager J. M.
Whitlock thanked the fire-
fighters for the way they res-
ponded to fire alarms, wheth-
er it was at 2 in the morning
or whether it was raining."


Said he: "We certainly ap-
preeiate your response to ra-
dio calls and your vital ac-
tivity and responsibility in
this part of Lago operations."
He announced that in ap-
preciation of their services,
the volunteer firefighters and
their wives will receive free
passes for attending movies
at the Esso Club for one year.
In concluding the dinner,
Fire Chief Wim Brinkman
thanked the firemen for their
cooperation. He had a surprise
for them: Ten home fire-ex-
tinguishers. These were raf-
fled among the volunteer fire-
fighters.
