Prevent Fires,

Before They Hurt...
Fires usually don't start by themselves. They are caused -
either by actions of people or by some conditions where fuel,
heat and oxygen may combine to start a fire;
At home, it is usually children who cause most of the fires.
Matches or anything that may start a fire should be kept out
of children's reach. However, adults also can cause home fires
by forgetting to turn off stoves or to unplug electric irons or
toasters
SOn the job, employees should be conscious of those operations
that may cause a fire. But in all job situations, you should ob-
serve the necessary safety precautions. For instance, wherever
required obtain the necessary hot work permits.
Conditions that may lead to a fire should be reported right
away. Oil spills and leakages, flammable liquids in open con-
tainers and exposed electrical wires are all particularly dang-
erous
. The task of preventing fire is not only the duty of the Fire
Department personnel. Every employee can help prevent fires
from starting by reporting fire hazards. It's always better and
les costly to prevent fires than to put them out
Repeumber, fire hurts!

Lago Oil and Transport Co., Ltd.
St. Nicholas, Aruba, U. A.
Attention: Mr. N. P. Schindler,
Coordinator, Job Placement
Dear Mr. Schindler:
During a recent visit and discussion with Mr. 5. T.
Hodge, I was advised that your office was responsible for
the placement of some Aruban workmen in the Virgin Islands
during 1965 and 1966.
My company had the contracts to supply and instal the
Thernal insulation requirements for the Harvey Alumina and
Hess Oil Refinery projects in St. Croix from October 1965
to December 1966. As resident project manager I employed
several Arubans as insulation mechanics under our U.S. De-
partment of Immigration Bonding System. I am happy to say
that these men did an excellent job and contributed greatly
to the overall success of both projects.
When I learned from Mr. Hodge that you were directly
responsible for sending us these excellent workers, I felt
that I must thank you. Unfortunately, you were not in your
office when I tried to visit you, however, I look forward to
meeting you during my next trip to Aruba and to thank you
again personally.
Very truly yours,
JOHNS-MANVILLE DE P. R., INC.

Joseph A. Bruno

Five Men Share FIs. 200
In CYI Awards for Ideas
Adopted During Sept.
A total of Fl. 200 was paid
out in CYI cash pries during
Stenmber. Altogether five
auggatlon were adopted by
the CYI Committee, each of
them winning Fla. 40.
Ireno Winterdaal, mainten-
ance man in TD-Laboratories,
suggested that a sign "Do
Not Park Nor Drive Closer
Than 20 Feet Behind This
Truck" be painted on the rear
end of all trucks with a. tall-
gate lift
A safety idea was conceiv-
ed by Nilo Swaen of Public &
Industrial Relations, who sug-
gested that the asbestos fence
west of 'a Esperanza Dis-
count House" be extended
with approximately six more
asbestos sheets. This would
prevent papers from being
blown through Lago's fence
into the pipe alley south of
the parking lot. The accumu-
lation of paper there, would
create a fire hazard. This idea
also helps maintain "good
housekeeping" in that area.
Another prize-winning dea
came from J. P. Falcoz, as-
sistant operator in Proces-
Refining. His idea wa to pro-
vide covers for all emergency
switches and Motor Operated
Valve switches in PCAR Con-
trol house and to paint the
covers red.
Other employees who rec-
eived Fls. 40 cash awards
were: John Arrindell Recla-
mation clerk Mechanical -
Materials Peter J. Beaujon -
Engineering assistant "B" -
Mechanical E.LS.

Total di F. 200 Reparti
Na Premio Na 5 Empleado
Pa Ideas Den September
Un suma total di f. 200 com-
pania a paga na premio di
placa pa CYI durante Septem-
ber. Na tur cincu sugerencia
a worde acepti door di comi-
sion di CYI, y cada un a re-
cibi f. 40 como premio.
Ireno Winterdaal, mainten-
ance man den TD-laboratorio
a sugeri pa un serial cu ta bi-
sa: "No para ni core mas cer-
'ca cu 20 pia tras di e truck
aki", worde geverf na banda
atras di tur truck eu tin un
lift na nan port atras.
Un idea di seguridad a bini
di Nilo Swaen cu ta traha na
Public & Industrial Relations.
kende a sugeri pa e transhi di
asbest pabao di "La Esperan-
za Discount House" worde ex-
tendi cu seis plancha di as-
best mas. Esey lo evita cu
bientu tira papel door di Lago
su fence cu por cai den un ca-
reda di tuberia pa zuid di lu-
gar di parkeer autonan. Gran
acumulacion di papel eynan
por traha un risen di candela.
Ademas e idea aki ta juda
mantene "limpieza na trabao"
den e vecindario.
Premio a bai tambe pa un
idea di J. P. Falconi, un as-
sistant operator den Process-
Refining. Su idea tabata pa
pone tapadera riba tur switch
di emergencia y switchnan cu
ta actua door di motor den
PCAR su control house y verf
nan tur corA.
SOtro empleado cu a recibi
premto na placa di f. 40 ta-
bata: John Arrindell, klerk na

terials; Peter J. Beaujon, en-
gineering assistant 'B'-Mech-
anical-EJS.

WORKMEN PUT the finishing touches on the gigantic Tank No. 914, the first of its TRAHADORNAN TA pone ultimo man na e gigantesco Tanki No. 914, e promer di su
kind at Lago. This huge crude reservoir dwarfs surrounding tanks, clause na Lago. E tanki di crudo grand aki ta haci e otro tankinan parce miniature.

Largest Crude Tank Ever Built at Lago

Dwarfs Surrounding Tanks Eight Times

The first tank to be com-
pleted in the Oil Movements
Project is also the largest at
Lago. This gigantic crude re-
servoir, Tank No. 914, was-put
into service September 22,
1967.
This tank is so large, that
two regular 80,000 bbl. tanks
had to be taken down to make
room for it. Located north-
west of the Gasoline Pump-
house, the tank has a diame-
ter of 250 feet and is 76 feet
high, including a four-foot
extension for its floating roof.
With a capacity of 637,000
barrels, the tank has the stor-
age space equivalent to about
eight regular tanks in the
tank farm.
Slightly more than two
ships are required to fill
the tank. The first barrel of
crude was pumped into the
new tank by Esso Brussels at
about 5:30 p.m. The Esso Ro-
ma and the Esso Maracaibo
each discharged part of their
load into the tank until it
was filled.
Instead of manual opera-
tion, a button was pushed
and an air-operated valve ac-

tuator started the discharge
of the crude into the tank. At
present 1400 Ledeen air-oper-
ated valves are being installed
throughout the refinery.
As part of the Oil Move-
ments Project, four fuel tanks
and another crude tank are
being constructed.
Not as large as Tank No.
914, the crude tank will have
a storage capacity of 500,000
barrels. It is expected to be
completed in January 1968.

Clothing Fires Ki...
Fashion may be the "mini,"
but there's nothing "mini"
about clothing fires.

Statistics indicate that
burns from clothing fires
cause hundreds of deaths,
thousands of serious, often
disfiguring injuries. Most
frequent victims are children
and the elderly.
Designs avoiding billowing
folds of material and long,
loose sleeves reduce chances
of clothing catching fire.
Most important of all is to
appreciate that just about any
clothing can burn, that a
flame, spark or other intense
heat may start it burning and
that the burning may be dan-
gerously rapid.
Safety from dangerous
clothing fires calls for watch-
ful care in all activities around
stoves, fireplaces and outdoor

fires, and in uaing matihe
and smoking materials. .
OhAdre Left Alonem..
Parents, tempted to leave
small children alone for "Just
a minute," should stop and
think that children are the
most unpredlctlble creatures
There are many ezampnes of
children left alone who have
caused death to themselves
and others and complete des-
truction of homes.
Always remember: Fire
needs Just moments to do Its
deadly work, and children left
alone are easy victims.

Do you take care not to leave
cooking unattended on stove
or in oven? Yes No
Do you keep children away
from stoves, so that they
would not turn on the
switch? Yes No
electrical Hazards
Are all your electrical appli-
ances, small and large, of
the approved type?
Yes No
Do you permit only qualified
electricians to install and
repair your wiring and fix-
tures? Yes No
Do you use only 15 amps fuses
for your household lighting
circuits? Yes No
If you use extension cords, are
they in good condition, and
out in open rather than un-
der rugs, over hooks, or
through door openings and
partitions? Yes No
Is there ample air circulation
around your TV set and
radios? Yes No
Are the motors of your large
appliances and power tools
cleaned and oiled regularly?
Yes No
Does everyone remember not
to leave a hot iron unat-
tended, never to wrap the
cord around a warm appli-
ance, and not to use more
than one appliance or an
outlet at a time? Yes No
Garage and Yard Dangers
Do you keep gasoline for mo-
tors in safety-type metal
cans (not in bottles) and
refuel outdoors? Yes No
Is your yard, or any adjacent
vacant property, kept clear
of dry leaves and combus-
tible litter? Yes No
When leaves and rubbish are
burned outdoors, do you use
a suitable incinerator, keep
water handy, and never
leave fire unattended?
Yes No
What to Do in Case of Fire
Does everyone know how to
report a fire by telephone.
