Determination and

Bring Engineering
The reward for his deter-
mination and perseverance
was a BS degree in chemical
engineering for Miguel
Young, who graduated last
month from the West Virgi-
nia Institute of Technology.


When he was working as a
yardman, he made up his
mind to get a college educa-
tion. This was made possible
through a twb-year grant
from the Lago Scholarship
Foundation and two years'
study under Lago's Educatio-
nal Assistance 4Program
(LEAP). It was when he join-
ed the tug captain training
course in 1962 that Miguel
decided he wanted to become
a chemical engineer.
Though he was hampered
by his educational back-
ground, Miguel was determin-
ed to prepare himself for uni-
versity training. After finish-
ing grade school at Noord, he
attended the Lago Vocational
School from 1944 to 1947. He
subsequently took a two-year
ICS course in Petroleum Ref-
ining, a one-year course in
chemistry from the California
University at Berkely and en-
gineering courses from the
Wisconsin University. In all
he earned eight certificates.
During his four years at
West Virginia Tech, he fol-
lowed three summer courses.

esters, Miguel made the
Dean's Honor Roll.
Commenting on college
training, Miguel says that al-
though one does not have ex-
tensive formal training, it's
still possible to earn a college
degree through real hard
study and determination.

With nearly twenty years
at Lago, Jack R. Sills recent-
ly left Lago to accept an as-
signment with Esso Standard
Eastern. An assistant comp-
troller since 1962, Mr. Sills
will be assigned to the Esso
office in Bangkok, Thailand.
He will assist in comptroller's
operations for Esso Eastern's
expanding refining activities.
Though his first assignment
will be in Bangkok, he may
be assigned to other opera-
tions of Esso Standard East-
ern in the area.


Following a two-year over-
seas assignment with Rotter-
dam's refinery, C. K. Rodkey
returned to Lago's Technical
Department recently.
At the 180,000-barrel refi-
nery of Esso Nederland, Mr.
Rodkey assisted in training
Dutch engineers in operations
of crude distillation, hydro-
desulphurization, utilities, wa-
ter treating plant, oil move-
ments and storage, lube oil
blending and packaging.
During his two years at
Rotterdam, Mr. Rodkey had
worked closely with Bill.But-
ler, who was transferred from
Lago tp the Rotterdam refi-
nery in 1962 as technical su-
perintendent and is now proc-
ess superintendent. Other La-
go men he met there were
Morley Marks, Kok Tai Wong
and Ron van Heeswijk. Messrs.
Marks and Wong have since
returned to Lago from their
loan assignment there.

problems all over was con-
firmed by a remark Bill But-
ler made to Mr. Rodkey:
"While at Lago, we were con-
cerned about the sulphur, but
here in Rotterdam we also
have the same problem."
Mr. Rodkey's assignment in
Rotterdam also called for
work in the refinery's budget
and project development areas,
where he gained added exper-
ience, particularly in the des-
ign and operation of off-unit
blending systems. The fuels
products part of the refinery,
which also has a chemical
products operation, is con-
cerned with the production of
"LPG, motor gasoline, kero-
sene, middle distillates and re-
sidual fuels. These products
are chiefly for supplying mar-
kets in the area.
As the Dutch engineers are
reasonably fluent with Eng-
lish and the working language
is English, there was no spec-

Information Sessions Keep Supervisors

Up to Date on Mechanical Procedures


Some 54 Mechanical super-
visors are now receiving 1-%-
hour information sessions a
day for one week to keep them
abreast of Mechanical Depart-
ment safety procedures on
tool handling and job handling
responsibilities. The sessions
are intended to give the super-
visors a better knowledge of
how, where and when to apply
these procedures correctly.
The supervisors receive in-
formation in thtee main
areas: Electrical Equipment
Procedures; Building Proce-
dures, and Metal Works Proc-
edures.
Instructor for electrical
procedures is A. W. Beyde, an
acting area supervisor. His
topics cover tool box security;
responsibility for generator re-
pairs; test running equipment
with exposed fan blades; test-
ing motors at Main Electric
Shop; replacement of damag-
ed or deteriorated motor
leaks; Electrical Shop dip
tank safety regulations; stan-
dard procedures for furnaces
and torches; grounding port-
able transformers and port-
able welding stands; tele-

as erecting scaffolds, admin-
istering and handling safety
valves, safety hazard reports,
safety regulations for water-
front areas, pneumatic utility
hoists, boatswain chairs and
portable power tools.
Area Supervisor G. A. Hen-
riquez covers the following
metal trades topics: regula-
tion on grinders; lifting heavy
loads in Mechanical Shops;
operating impact wrenches;
clamping refinery lines; port-
able and pedestal grinders;
pneumatic power saw, hot tap
regulations; regulation on
pipe threading and cutting;
and use of portable pneumatic
test pumps.
In giving the sessions, the
instructors use a manual and
show slides to explain some
of the topics. The sessions,
given to 9-man classes in the
Training Facilities of the
Mechanical Shops, started
August 28 and will run
through September 15.

pated in soccer and was cap-
tain of the school's team. He
once attended a general as-
sembly of the United Nations
in New York and a nuclear
convention in Dayton, Ohio.
Miguel's fellow students
from Aruba who graduated at
the Institute and who now
work as Lago engineers are
Ray Farro, Al Hoo, Henry de
Cuba, Juan Noguera, and
Francisco Kock. Other stud-
ents he left at West Virginia
Tech are Jacobo Geerman,

discussions, Lago President
W. A. Murray said:
"Today the total picture re-
garding our competitive posi-
tion is not as grave as it has
been on other similar occa-
sions in the past.
"But, as you willbe able to
conclude from the informa-
tion, Lago's position continues


to be one requiring consider-
able good judgment and the
most precise analysis of the
Information available."
During the talks, the Coun-
cil heard presentations by
members of Lago's top man-
agement on such areas as:
Lago as a refinery; Lago as
a world market supplier; La-
go's corporate relationships;
Planning for progress; and
Lago as a corporate citizen.
Following the talks, the vi-
sitors were conducted on a re-
finery tour which included a
stop at the new Oil Move-
ments Controlhouse presently
under construction. Later, the
Council was Lago's guest at
an Esso Club luncheon.
The arrival at Lago and the
visit to the Oil Movements
Project were videotaped and
shown on Tele-Aruba the
same evening.

Fire Demonstration In Classroom Now

Possible With Carmody Hazards Trainer


Lago now has a set of ap-
paratuses for giving actual
fire training and demonstra-
tions in classroom. This is the
Carmody Combustible Has-
ards Trainer recently acquir-
ed by the Fire Department.
Compact and stored in box
of about 2x3x4 feet, the
training kit contains 46 pieces
of equipment to perform an
almost unlimited number of
small scale demonstrations
and tests.
With the Carmody training
kit demonstrations in three
main areas can be given:
1. The chemistry of fire, in-
cluding an explanation of
the fire triangle or the re-
quirement for fuel in vapor
form, air, and heat or en-
ergy in order to create a


fire, and the general char-
acteristics of various fuels,
particularly gasoline and
similar hydrocarbons.
2. A series of demonstrations
in which fires and/or ex-
plosions are actually creat-
ed using a variety of ener-
gy or ignition sources, such
as static electricity, electric
current, and fire.
3. Several demonstrations in
which a fire is extinguish-
ed by the removal of any
one of the three elements
necessary for combustion.
Some of the demonstrations
are pictorially illustrated on
this page. For each demon-
stration, the kit also provides
a chart giving a concise and
clear description of basic
principles.

New Oil Developed by ERE Will Help

Control Disease-Carrying Mosquitoes


A new mosquito-control oil
has been developed by the
Baytown Petroleum Research
Laboratory of Esso Research
and Engineering Company to
help combat the growing
world problem caused by this
disease-carrying insect.
In Aruba there is a black,
persistent-type of salt water
mosquito that causes a nuis-
ance in specific areas along
the south coast of Aruba dur-
ing some periods of the year.
The company aid the
threat of household mosqui-
toes has recently increased
because of their growing abi-
lity to resist chemical con-
trols. The new product is der-
ived from petroleum. Mosqui-
toes have developed no known
resistance to petroleum deri-.
vatives as they have to chem-
icals, the company said.
The company, which is
headquartered I Linden, N.J.,
said as little as two gallons
pr acre of the new oil can ef-
ctvely control mosquito
propegatjo. By contrast, die-
se fuel, which is also derived
from petroleum, requires an
radiation of from 20 to 40

within 6 to 12 hours.
The new oil was developed
by G. V. Chambers of the
company's Baytown facility in
coperatlon with Dr. D. W.
Micks, head of the Depart-
ment of Preventive Medieine
and Community Health at the
University of Texas Medical
Branch.

During his vacation last
year, Mr. Rodkey and family.
