An on-the-job seminar in
basic economics began this
month for 36 employees.
Sponsored by the Lago Semi-
nar Committee, the course is
being taught by Dr. Robert
Henderson of Bowling Green
University who is also con-
ducting a Family Economics
Seminar after working hours.
The four-week Basic Eco-
nomics course began Aug. 7.
Sessions are held Mondays
and Wednesdays from 10:00
a.m. to noon for a total of 16
lecture hours.
Employees participating in
the seminar were nominated
by their departments and in-
clude: staff professional peo-
ple, staff management mem-
bers in key positions and ex-
patriates who have not had
training in economics.
Two weeks before the se-
minar began, the participants
were instructed to read "Eco-
nomics in One Lesson" by
Henry Hazilitt. This book
reviews a number of basic
economic principles and then
analyzes a number of mis-
conceptions which have grown
up around these principles.
Dr. Henderson, in his eight
lectures, assists the students

Shirley Poterson, Nurse in
the Medical Department, was
promoted to Anesthetist & X-
Ray Technician in Lago Hos-
pital.
Mrs. Poterson, the former
Shirley Nicholls, recently re-
turned from Puerto' Rico
where she obtained her anes-
thetist diploma. During a
year and a half she studied
at the Puerto Rico School of
Nurse Anesthetist graduat-
ing with honors.
This specialized training *
was obtained through a
Lago Scholarship Foundation


in examining these fallacies
which can interfere with ma-
king proper economic evalua-
tions on the job each day.
One of the examples that
the class has dealt with is
the fallacy that "automation
creates unemployment". Dr.
Henderson has indicated that
while there are short term
negative effects often related
to automation, the long term
effect is increased employ-
ment and productivity. It's
necessary that the short
term effects be considered
but as a separate problem.
The author also explains
that the whole of economics
can be reduced to a single
lesson, and that lesson re-
duced to a single sentence:
"The art of economics con-
sists in looking not merely at
the immediate but at the lon-
ger effects of any act or poli-
cy; it consists in tracing the
consequences of that policy
not merely for one group but
for all groups.
Based on this, Dr. Hender-
son brings forward economic
situations by giving examples
from everyday affairs.

service men received their
30-year service emblems and
certificates in the President's
office. Mr. W.A. Murray also
presented five employees
with their 25-year service
watches.
The 30-year men are:
George C. Granger, Process -
Oil Movements; Deo G. N. de
Palm, Pub. & Ind. Rel. Dept.,
and Peter J. Nisbet, Process
Refining.
'Mr. Granger was original-
ly employed with Esso Trans-
portation Company. He work-
ed briefly in Lago's Ship-
yard but went back to seafar-
ing. He returned to Lago int
1950 where he worked in Ma-
rine Launches. Since 1956
he has been a quartermaster

New Dempster-Dumpster Trucks Provide


Improved Handling, Durability and Safety


Lago recently acquired the
use of two modern Dumpster-
Dumpster trucks as part of
its replacement program of
automotive equipment.
The new trucks, equipped
with hydraulic lifting equip-
ment, are used for hauling
debris and transporting hea-
vy material.
A special feature on these
replacement trucks include
automatic transmission, which
makes driving easier due to
less gear shifting. An addi-
tional advantage is that the
vehicle bodies are shorter,
enabling better maneuverabi-
lity in a smaller area.


The trucks also stand high-
er than the ones previously
used, making it possible for
the vehicles to pass over irre-
gular or bumpy areas with-
out causing any damage to
the chasis.
Another special feature is
the stabilizer jacks at the
rear of the truck, which en-
ables better distribution of
the weight of heavy loads.
These jacks come down and
help support the hydraulic
system on the truck.

try's first unmanned, fully
automatic service station.
Claimed to be one of the first
of its kind in the world, it
offers both cash and credit
card automated pumps, sup-

matic machines which dis-
pense fruit drinks, foodstuffs
and cigarettes.
It is called Esso-Automatic
and can provide Esso's three
grades of petrol as well as
oil-mixed petrol, and certain
TEA articles (TBA stands
for Tyres, Batteries and Ac-
cessories.)
There is a considerable re-
duction in the price of the pe-
trol from the automatic ser-
vice station compared with

vehicle should not be put in
motion before lifting the

At present these trucks
will be used extensively in the
major construction areas
within the refinery, where re-
moval of debris or handling

front of the central shops.
These are the first heavy

Five Super Tankers Will Be Built

In European Shipyards For Jersey


Standard Oil (New Jersey)
has ordered five super tank-
ers of the 240,000 deadweight
ton class to be built in ship.
yards in West Germany and
the Netherlands. This an-
nouncement was made recent-
ly by Esso International Inc.,
worldwide Marketing and
Marine Transportation affi-
liate of Standard Oil Compa-
ny (New Jersey).
Three of the big ships will
be built in the yards of We-
ser A.G. in Bremen and two
in the Verolme United Ship-
yards in Rotterdam. This is
one of the largest orders to
be placed in European ship-
yards by one company. The
ships have a combined dead-
weight tonnage which totals
more than 1,200,000 DWT.

knots. The tankers will be
the largest single-screw ships
ever built. They will all have
the Esso-developed bulbous
bow which improves speed
and economy of fuel con-
sumption.
The five tankers were devel-
oped after extensive research
directed toward achieving
high performance, handling
and efficiency characteris-
tics. This research was car-
ried out through the coordi-
nated efforts of a number of
Jersey Standard Marine and
Research affiliates.
When completed in 1969
and 1970, the ships will join
the Jersey Standard fleet of
126 vessels, the largest pri-
vately-owned tanker fleet in
the world. No decision has
been made yet on which Jer-
sey affiliate will operate the
ships.

Measuring Sea's Effect on Radar Waves

A group of scientists and
engineers from the John
Hopkins University and the
Defense Research Laborato-
ry of the University of Texas
were in Aruba recently.
Their purpose was a series
of tests to measure the scat-
tering of radar signals from
ocean waves. In all, sixteen
persons from the two univer-
sities participated in the ope-
ration. The work was spon-
sored by the U.S. Navy and
took place over a four-week
period.
The equipment used in the
research in elude a radar van
with two radars, two power
trucks, a communications
trailer, a C-47 aircraft with
two radar systems and a 55-
foot motor sailboat.
The ground-based equip-
ment was located at Colorado
Point to simulate a ship at
sea. Here a commanding view
of the ocean was obtained.

tained that will hopefully

are created, and how they
move. An additional purpose
of this operation is to demon-
strate the usefulness or ra-
dar in the study of oceano-
graphy
Aruba was selected for this
operation because of the
strong trade winds that
create a variety of sea con-
ditions from medium to large
waves. The climate condi-
tions also make this an ideal
place to perform a field ope-
ration of this nature.

Arriving on a brief visit to
Aruba on August 17, was H.
R.H. Prince Claus of the Ne-
therlands. His arrival at the
Princess Beatrix Airport was
videotaped with Lago's VTR
equipment. The videotape was
shown to the community on
Tele-Aruba the same night.
The Prince, accompanied
by his secretary Mr. H.J. Ba-
ron van Asbeck, arrived in
Curagao on August 15 to
inaugurate the Kingdom
Games.
On his visit to Aruba, he
was accompanied by his se-
cretary, Baron van Asbeck,
His Excellency the Governor
of the Netherlands Antilles,
N. Debrot, and his Aide-de-
Camp Captain P.J. Lever, and


His Excellency Minister C.D.
Kroon, acting Prime Minister
of the Netherlands Antilles.
At the airport he was re-
ceived by Lt. Governor of
Aruba, O.S. Henriquez, and
His Excellency F. J. Tromp,
Minister of Culture and Edu-
cation. He was then introduc-
ed to the Members of the Ad-
ministrative Council and the
Kingdom Games Committee.
After a reception at the
Aruba Caribbean Hotel, he
left for Wilhelmina Stadium
to open the football game be-
tween Surinam and the Ne-
therlands Antilles. After the
match, won by the Nether-
lands Antilles, Prince Claus
returned to Curacao.
