Lago Scholarship Foundation Student

F. Kock Returns as Chemical Engineer


Another Lago Scholarship
Foundation student who com-
pleted his chemical engineer-
ing study at the West Virgi-
nia Institute of Technology
last month was Francisco
Kock.
A mechanical engineering
graduate from UTS (Extend-
ed Technical School) in Hol-
land, Mr. Kock followed his
practical training year at La-
go. He subsequently worked
for about ten months in Tech-
nical-Process Engineering be-
fore enrolling at the West Vir-
ginia Institute of Technology
in September, 1963.
As a senior, Mr. Kock this


year earned a second-place
award from Union Carbide
Corporation Metals Division
at Alloy (W.V.) for a paper
in chemical engineering. He
wrote "A Comparison of
Dropwise and Filmwise Con-
densation on Horizontal Tu-
bes."
In May this year, Mr. Kock
married Shannon Truman,
sister of Mrs. Sonja de Cuba-
Truman. Shannon graduated
recently from the Montgom-
ery High School.
Mr. Kock has been assign-
ed in the Analytical/Develop-
ment Section of the Labora-
tories.

Largest Pipestill of New Jersey Standard

Is In Operation at Fawley Refinery


The largest operating pipe-
still of Jersey Standard went
"on stream" recently at the
Fawley Refinery in England.
Designed by Esso Engineer-
ing, the pipestill has several
novel features.
Project management and
startup advisory services
were also provided by Esso
Engineering. Fawley Refinery
personnel actively participat-
ed in all phases of the project.
During the project, Faw-
ley's No. 3 pipestill was ex-
panded from a feed rate of
85,000 to 185,000 barrels per
stream day. Ultimately the
unit will be expanded to
250,000 barrels a day.

The project also included
six new light ends towers to
process the naphtha product
from the pipestill.
Some of the project's novel
features include a new pipe-
still furnace design, the suc-
cessful demonstration of the
"hot tower" concept for ex-
panding an existing pipestill,
successful application of noise
attenuating principles, and
the remote control of a com-
plex unit. Another feature in-
volves the operation of the
unit from a control house
some 500 feet away, with con-
trol house and field operators
communicating through radio
hats.

To Gain Work Experience
Attending the Lago Sum-
mer Training Program for
college students this year are
fourteen students. Twelve of
them attend universities or
colleges in the U.S., one in
Canada and one in Holland.
One of the summer stud-
ents, R. Barros, studies chem-
ical engineering under Lago's
Special Educational Program
for Outstanding Students.
The summer training pro-
gram is intended to provide
work experience to help stu-
dents learn good work habits
and attitudes.
Enrolled for an eight-week
program ending August 11,
1967, the students will receive
a grant-in-aid for each four-
week period.

Knowing Noses of Oil Odor Sniffers Fourteen Employees Win

A unique occupation that is
guaranteed to befuddle the
most sophisticated computer is
that of the refinery panelist
who tests petroleum products
with his nose. Among his qua-
lifications are a well trained
sense of smell, a memory for
odors and the ability to sniff
out product problems. Under
his nose pass a whole range
or aromatic oils, ranging from
naphthas used in dry cleaning
to solvents used in making
cooking oils, margarine, and
peanut butter. The Baton
Rouge,. Baytown, and Bayway
refineries of Humble Oil &
Refining Company are the
homes of the educated noses.
By simply smelling a pro-
duct sample, odor-test panel-
ist can detect minute impuri-
ties as indistinct as two parts
in a million.
Humble odor panels usu-
ally lab employees who volun-
teer for this extra-curricular
duty are chosen with ut-
most care. They must take
preliminary tests designed to
locate noses with a keen sense
for scents. Once selected, the
panelists go into training.
They memorize some 25 aro-
mas and their relative
strengths from an odor library
set up in each refinery.
Each panelist picks up a
brandy sniffer or sample bot-
tle, sniffs, reflects, sniffs
again, and in due time, writes
down what he thinks he smells
and its relative impact. His
report is based on standards
from the odor libraries. A
good panel usually has no
trouble agreeing on a verdict.
Special precautions are ta-
ken by the sniffers. They
avoid such things as after-
shaving lotion, onions and
chewing gum and usually wait
an hour after eating before
rating a sample. Sniffers with

ing gum, and similar items be-
fore attending sessions.

During the Month of May
Fourteen employees earned
cash prizes during the month
of May, when their sugges-
tions paid off in the CYI pro-
gram. They shared a total of
Fls. 610, the highest prize go-
ing to Alexander Leon, a Ma-
chinist A in Mechanical-Ma-
chinist. Mr. Leon won FIs. 90
with his idea to remove liners
from cylinders on Compressor
No. 6 at GAR-1.
An initial award of FIs. 40
went to Joseph Lioe-A-Tjam,
Tester "B" in Lab-Inspection
Section. He suggested the use
of soap suds on vacuum flask
used for freezing point deter-
mination.

THE ABOVE two graphs give an indication of our safety perform-
ance over the past years. Although our 1966 disabling injury freq-
uency rate was 0.81 (left chart), it can be noted on the chart at
right that the accidents and injuries show an upward trend. At the
end of March, 1967, employees sustained two disabling injuries,
which brought the frequency rate to 2.4.

13th A.S.U. Olympiad
Presents Twenty Events
Throughout the Island
In a 10-day action-packed
program, the Aruba Sport
Union (ASU) features twenty
different sports on the fields,
courts and in the clubs
throughout the island.
From June 22 to July 2,
Aruba sports men and dele-
gates from Venezuela, Colom-
bia, Puerto Rico, Santo Do-
mingo, Martinique and Cura-
cao will compete in various
events. The sport events in-
elude volleyball, basketball,.
softball, baseball, bowling,
fencing, trapshooting, judo,
skindiving, swimming, bil-
liards, table tennis, athletics,
cycling, boxing, football, lawn
tennis, trolling, weightlifting
and sailing.
The Lago Sport Park was
the arena for athletics, cycl-
ing, baseball and softball,
while bowling matches were
held at the Esso Club.
At the opening of the ASUT
Olympiad, Ramon Sharpe of
the Aruba Judo Association
was named Sportsman of the
Year. The crowning of the
1967 Sports Queen and clos-
ing of the ASU Olympiad will
take place Sunday, July 2, at
the Wilhelmina Stadium.

Seven Aruban beauties par-
aded in cocktail dresses, bath-
ing suits and evening dresses
before a jury and a large au-
dience in De Veer .Theater
Friday night, June 16. The
occasion was election of Miss
Aruba 1967.
Ivonne Maduro, Miss Bar-
bie, was elected Miss Aruba,
while Ankie Bruin, Miss Am-
stel, won second place and La-
raine Pappers, Miss Eterna-
matic, was the second runner-
up.


Other contestants were Er-
na Croes, Miss Pieter Schoen;
Filomena Feliciano, Miss Ban-
king; Filomena Diaz, Miss
Hillman; and Filomena Croes,
Miss La Linda.

Attending the occasion were
Nena Sanchez, Miss Curagao

Dependability, Mileage Are the Rewards


Out in Springfield, New
Jersey, there is a torture
chamber in which can be
found highly scientific equip-
ment for committing all kinds
of mutilations. Regularly, the
men in white, who operate the
place, put a variety of "bod-
ies" through numerous ter-
rible contortions stretch-
ing, tearing, puncturing. The

Every time you drive your
car, you rightly place a great
deal of reliance (consciously
or not) on the ability of your
tires to take an unmerciful
beating. And, as has been

not you return safely, may
depend on how your tires face
up to the hazards which come
their way in the course of an
ordinary drive. (For example,
hitting a small chuck hole at
50 miles an hour twists a tire

his entire Lago career in
Technical Laboratories. He
began as sample boy B and
progressed through the var-
ious tester levels, becoming a
junior inspector B in 1945. A
group head since 1964, his
title was changed to Product
Quality Coordinator in 1966.
Mr. Goedgedrag has follow-
ed courses in Modern Super-

rino, who completes 30 years
at Lago today, joined Mech-

recently.
