Largest Pipestill of New Jersey Standard Is In Operation at Fawley Refinery The largest operating pipe- still of Jersey Standard went "on stream" recently at the Fawley Refinery in England. Designed by Esso Engineer- ing, the pipestill has several novel features. Project management and startup advisory services were also provided by Esso Engineering. Fawley Refinery personnel actively participat- ed in all phases of the project. During the project, Faw- ley's No. 3 pipestill was ex- panded from a feed rate of 85,000 to 185,000 barrels per stream day. Ultimately the unit will be expanded to 250,000 barrels a day. The project also included six new light ends towers to process the naphtha product from the pipestill. Some of the project's novel features include a new pipe- still furnace design, the suc- cessful demonstration of the "hot tower" concept for ex- panding an existing pipestill, successful application of noise attenuating principles, and the remote control of a com- plex unit. Another feature in- volves the operation of the unit from a control house some 500 feet away, with con- trol house and field operators communicating through radio hats. ante di Verano na Lago 1 (Continud di Pagina 1) ograma di Nomber di e estudiantenan, aba 11 di y tereno di nan studio, como idiantenan tambe e departamentonan ca- omo ajudo mind nan ta traha ta: (Mira an cu nan kolom 3 y 4 pa nombernan di estudiantes). Among his qua- lifications are a well trained sense of smell, a memory for odors and the ability to sniff out product problems. Under his nose pass a whole range or aromatic oils, ranging from naphthas used in dry cleaning to solvents used in making cooking oils, margarine, and peanut butter. The Baton Rouge,. Baytown, and Bayway refineries of Humble Oil & Refining Company are the homes of the educated noses. By simply smelling a pro- duct sample, odor-test panel- ist can detect minute impuri- ties as indistinct as two parts in a million. Humble odor panels usu- ally lab employees who volun- teer for this extra-curricular duty are chosen with ut- most care. They must take preliminary tests designed to locate noses with a keen sense for scents. Once selected, the panelists go into training. They memorize some 25 aro- mas and their relative strengths from an odor library set up in each refinery. Each panelist picks up a brandy sniffer or sample bot- tle, sniffs, reflects, sniffs again, and in due time, writes down what he thinks he smells and its relative impact. His report is based on standards from the odor libraries. A good panel usually has no trouble agreeing on a verdict. Special precautions are ta- ken by the sniffers. They avoid such things as after- shaving lotion, onions and chewing gum and usually wait an hour after eating before rating a sample. For Your Protection! Dependability, Mileage Are the Rewards Out in Springfield, New Jersey, there is a torture chamber in which can be found highly scientific equip- ment for committing all kinds of mutilations. Regularly, the men in white, who operate the place, put a variety of "bod- ies" through numerous ter- rible contortions stretch- ing, tearing, puncturing. The carcasses thus abused are... brand new tires! For this is the Atlas Laboratory where tires are an extremely impor- tant item in the basic testing and research programs. Every time you drive your car, you rightly place a great deal of reliance (consciously or not) on the ability of your tires to take an unmerciful beating. And, as has been proved frequently, whether or not you return safely, may depend on how your tires face up to the hazards which come their way in the course of an ordinary drive. (For example, hitting a small chuck hole at 50 miles an hour twists a tire grotesquely out of shape). It is the dedicated responsi- As a result of these exten- sive research and testing re- quirements as well as the most rigid manufacturing and performance standards known to the industry, the Atlas brand name represents qual- ity and reliability. Esso gua- rantees every Atlas tire. An indication of how Atlas performance rates against first line competition can be seen quickly in the chart be- low. For example, the Atlas Plycron Tire is made in pre- cision-engraved molds to the extremely fine tolerance of 3/1000th of an inch of per- feet round. Competitive molds can be out of round by as much as 31/1000th of an inch. Just how much difference this really makes can be seen when you know that this, in conjunction with numerous other design and construction features, is enough to allow the Atlas tire to roll 3,000 miles more than most original equipment tires. The Atlas Plycron is the top of the line. It has a longer JIIJ 49 THIS STEEL skeleton of what will be the new Oil ESAKI TA eskeleto di loke ta birando edificio Movements building is another sign of progress of the Oil Movements project. They pursue this res- ponsibility, with a passion for perfection, in "in-depth" tests on Atlas as well as competi- tive brand tires. Their objective is to see that Atlas tires, not only meet, but where practical sur- pass, competition. To accom- plish their work, they use more than 87 tests on a var- iety of highly refined mach- ines and equipment which lit- erally can turn a tire "inside- out". (A few of the tests are illustrated in this page). Much of the testing done might seem unnecessary be- cause it creates extreme con- ditions which the product may never have to face. Neverthe- less, Atlas feels it is impor- tant to assure that products bearing the Atlas trademark will deliver more than is re- quired of them and, for this reason has a huge army of loyal, satsfled users. Its overall perfor- mance is at least 10 per cent better than most original equipment tires installed on new cars. He transfer- red to Mechanical-Machinist in 1940 and later to the Gar- age as a senior apprentice A. He remained there until 1942, when he was called to serve in the army. He returned to Lago three years later and advanced to Garage mechanic A in 1952. His transfer to Executive Marketing was in 1962. Mr. Lopes 'rok Lago courses in Work Direction I & I. Mr. Goedgedrag ham spent his entire Lago career in Technical Laboratories. He began as sample boy B and progressed through the var- ious tester levels, becoming a junior inspector B in 1945. A group head since 1964, his title was changed to Product Quality Coordinator in 1966. Mr. Goedgedrag has follow- ed courses in Modern Super- the Mile-Pak. Both are excel- lent tires in their price level. There is a basic reason for Atlas excellence. It is the in- sistence that all Atlas tires be made according to the ri- gid manufacturing standards set by Atlas and not accord- ing to the manufacturer's own standards. Pursuant to arrangements with Atlas Supply Company, Atlas tires are made by sev- eral manufacturers who must not only accept the high At- las specifications, but also be ready for regular and spot in- spection by Atlas representa- tives who make certain that there is no let down in quality. If there is, Atlas will reject the product and refuse to per- mit use of the Atlas brand upon those goods. When the motorist pur- chases new tires for his car, he is literally placing the lives of his family on the line. Tire performance is that impor- tant! And-the people at Atlas are determined that this con- fidence will never be mis- placed! Watch Recipients | visory Practices II, Organiza- tion Development Lab and in Effective Management.
