AROpA Lago Oil & Transport Co.,ss Lago Oil & Transport Co., Ltd. NJ )E weB May It, 19.. Refinery Good Housekeeping Program Adds New Dimension Batman In Good Housekeeping Action! Have you ever seen Batman and Robin in action going up the stairs of our refinery units? Perhaps not But soon, anything above ground level will be inspected by the Saf- ety Inspection men, process foremen and regional super- visors. Batman and Robin can help give an idea how the new Good Housekeeping program works: Robin: Holy broom handle, Batman! What's this new Good Housekeep- ing Program all about? Batman: Well, Robin, there are three new featu- res in the program: 1.From now on, three men will be inspecting the ar- eas: the Safety Section man, a Pro- cess foreman and a Mechanical regio- nal supervisor. 2. These men will al- so check all elevat- ed areas, even as high as the top story of the Cat Cracker. 3. Oil spills and weeds will also be includ- ed in the total rat- ing. Robin: That's all very nice, but why so many men for this kind of job? Batman: One thing you should remember, Robin. In the past, only the Safety man was look- ing around, but three can see more than one. Another thing is that this new system makes it possible for the supervisors to know their areas "inch by inch". They may be startled by observing things, perhaps unsafe situa- tions which might otherwise never have been discovered. They will know their area better and can speak from experience whenever they talk about their area. Robin: I understand now. What are the other points of the pro- gram? Batman: Some of the impor- tant points are the following. Each area will be inspected once every two months, without previous warning. The pro- gram is administered by the IR-Safety Sec- tion and the follow- ing grading system is used: (Continued on page 6) Batman Ta Drenta Na Accion Na Lago Pa Yuda Programa Nobo di Limpieza Bo por a jega di mira Bat- tambe di foreman di process y man y Robin na action ors supervisornan regional. nan ia core sum trapl di nos unidadnan den refineria? ODL-Type Meetings Help Managers In Reviewing Policies Affecting Them Some 200 management members will contribute to the final steps of policy reviews and updating which have been underway since last year. Using the same techniques which proved ef- fective in the Organization Development Laboratory a while back, the management members will have an oppor- tunity to review those policies and plans which apply specifi- cally to them. Before attending the ses- sions, the management mem- bers have already indicated which policies or plans should be considered for this team review and evaluation. Those areas which have the greatest general interest will be con- sidred first and so on until all significant policy questions are dealt with in the team manner. In these policy review ses- sions, a group of about 20 members will be divided into three teams of six to seven persons. Each team will be asked to identify those poll- cies or plans which they con- sider need improvement These team problems will be presented to and discussed by (Continued on page S) Mateo Reyes Awarded Royal Decoration For Contribution T On the occasion of the birth- day of Queen Juliana on April 30 this year, Her Majesty con- ferred a royal distinction on Mateo Reyes, an Electrician A in Mechanical-Electrical. Croce a haya decoracion di Official den Orden di Oranje Nassau. A 100% INCREASE OVER 1965 Lago Purchases Over FIs. 8.5 Million In Local Materials I Services In 1966 During 1966, Lago's pur- chases of materials, equipment and services from local busin- ess amounted to over Fls. 8.5 million. This represents more than 100% increase over 1965, when total purchases of mat- erials and services amounted to Fls. 4,232,000. Major services totaled over Fls. 7,000,000 in 1966, com- pared to Fls. 2,700,000 in 1965. Last year, some forty- one contractors employing se- veral hundred workers were engaged by Lago on the Oil Movements, Control House and other projects. In keeping with Lago's pol- icy to buy all materials, equipment and services that are available locally, the Ma- terials Division does not stock items that can be purchased - or made on the island. The philosophy to discon- tinue as many stock items as possible that can be purchased locally has two definite bene- fits: (1) The local economy is boosted by the increased amounts of money in circula- tion, (2) With less stock items, less money is tied up in in- ventory, and can be used for other building projects. Some of the items and serv- ices bought locally include automobile rentals, stationery and office supplies, lumber, pipe and fittings, paints and hardware. Other typical local expenditures were for sand, crushed stone, concrete blocks, service watches and catering service for Lago dinners. For the first four months of this year, total services and materials purchased locally amounted to more than Fls. 3,293,000, compared to FPs. 2,830,000 for a four-month period in 1966. 100% MAS CU ANJA 1965 Lago Ta Cumpra 8.5 Miljon Florin Na Material y Servicionan Local den 1966 Durante 1966 Lago su com- pranan na material, equipo y servicionan di comerciantenan local a monta na mas cu 8.5 miljon florin. Esaki ta dobbel di anja 1965, durante cual La- go a cumpra un total di f. 4,232,000. Servicionan grand a mon- tana na f. 7 miljon na 1966, compare cu f. 2.7 miljon na 1965. Anja pasa 41 contratis- ta cu ta duna trabao na va- rios centenar di trahador a hanja encargonan di Lago ri- ba proyectos di Oil Move- ments, Control House y otro projectonan. ~- -- i May 19, 197T ARUBA ES80 NEWS Safety Awareness Committee Reviews M.E.SoerstonL.Bergen Soderston Named Materials Div. The effectiveness of the Committee's efforts may be evident from over 160 hazard- ous conditions that were cor- rected in the last four months of this year. "The task of reporting un- safe conditions or hazards is one to which every employee should contribute," says Saf- ety Head John Hodgson. Each employee can report unsafe conditions or hazards by means of safety slips. These should be turned in through the employee's immediate su- pervisor. Every week, the Saf- ety Awareness Committee re- views some fifty of these saf- ety slips. Two promotions were an- nounced effective May 1, Mal- colm E. Bergen May 19, Ifl7 Lago's Heavy Equipment Operators Use Skill and 'Long Arm' To Do Their Job Great skill and experience is needed in all activities in a refinery such as Lago. This is also. true for the drivers and operators of heavy equipment at Lago, like cranes, ross car- riers, winch trucks, and giraf- fe trucks. Of all these pieces of heavy equipment, the crane opera- tors have the longest "arms" to do their job. With manual skills, they extend the long arm of their crane some 110 feet away or raise it over 80 feet high to lift tube bundles or other pieces of equipment at various locations in the re- finery. Lago has five large cranes, which are capable of lifting up to 45 tons. The experienced men in the cranes' cabins are Luis Werleman, Ricardo We- ver, Estanislao Koolman and Ignacio Wernet. A Pettibone winch truck, with a lifting capacity of eleven tons, is ope- rated by Rudolf Rasmjn. One of the largest lifts the operators recall they once handled in the refinery was when four cranes had to join hands to lift and put the east and west reactors of NFAR in place. Because work is frequently done in confined spaces at many refinery units, these op- erators have always to dedi- cate special attention not only to their own safety, but to the safety of their fellow workers as well. In addition to these "crawl- ing animals" with their ex- tended arms, Lago also has other mechanical animals: the giraffes and camels (roes car- riers). The high-back 'camels' can carry up to 20-ton lifts between their four wheels. The giraffe is used particularly to do repairs, painting and other work where a step ladder would be impractical to use. THIS WINCH truck can lift eleven tons. E WINCH truck aki per hiza diezun ton. Give Your Car Battery A Lift With Baking Soda And Get a Better Start Do you have trouble start- ing your car in the morning? Then dirt may very well be the cause of your trouble. It's not generally known, but accumulated dirt on top of a battery can make the differ- ence in instant starts, slow starting or no starting at all. A film of. dirt on a battery top may be conducting electri- city, thus becoming a small but steady voltage leak that keeps the battery in a run- down condition. To check this possibility, ,just borrow a voltmeter from your mechanic, and make the following tests. Attach one lead of the volt- meter to the correct ground terminal of the battery. Touch the free voltmeter lead to var- rious points on top of the bat- tery, always avoiding the ter- minal that is already connect- ed to the voltmeter. If the scale reads more than 0.1 volt for any point touched, the battery should be cleaned. To clean the battery, thor- oughly dissolve three spoon- fuls of ordinary baking soda in a quart of water. Brush this solution onto the battery Although the 914 Copier is not designed to reduce or en- large, it can make multilith masters for reproduction on the multilith presses. The push-button machine, which can produce perfect co- pies without making adjust- ments or exposure setting, is easy to operate. It has control buttons for "On", "Print" and the number of copies desired can be set by turning the print selector knob. The 914 Xerox Copier has been obtained on a rental ba- sis from the Xerox Nederland- pe Antillen N.V. from Curacao. SRA.
