Eleven former Lago Voca-
tional School students were
special guests in Mr. Mur-
ray's office this month. To-
gether, they completed 330
years at Lago. They represent-
ed the Mechanical, Technical,
Process and Comptroller's De-
partments.
Those who received their
30-year emblems and certifi-
cates from Mr. Murray were:
Johannes Croes, Mechanical-
Machinist; Vivente C. Figaroa
and Julio Croes, Mechanical-
Engineering; Gabriel A. Hen-
riquez and Floriano Geerman,
Mechanical-M&C; Miguel Ja-
cobs and Juan de Cuba, Mech-
anical Materials; Laureano
Geerman and Clemente Zie-
vinger, Technical-Labs; Da-
mian Tromp, Comptroller's-
Office Services; and Francisco
Croes, Process-Refining.

1942. In May, 1945, he was
promoted to Machinist A, his
present position.
Vicente C. Figaroa, Engin-
eering Assistant A in Mech-
anical-Engineering, was ori-
ginally employed in Mechani-
cal-Pipe. After five years in
the local army, he returned to
Mechanical Pipe. Following
promotions, he was made
Drafting Assistant in Pipe
Craft in 1956. He became a'
Drafting Assistant-Metal
Crafts in 1962. Three years la-
ter, he was transferred to
Mechanical-Engineering as an
Engineering Assistant A.
Julio Croes' employment
started in Mechanical-Instru-
ment as an Apprentice D. He
advanced to Instrumentman A
in 1944. He was transferred
to Technical-Engineering in
1948 as a Jr. Field Inspector
A. In 1964, he became Sr. En-
gineering Assistant in Mech-
anical-Engineering.
All his thirty years, Flori-
ano Geerman has spent in
Mechanical-Mason & Insula-
tors. He was drafted into mil-
itary service in 1940 and re-
turned to Mason & Insulators
in 1944. He progressed
through the various Mason
categories and became Mason
A in 1949. In 1954 he was
promoted to foreman. His title
was changed to Foreman-
Building & Services in 1963.

From Kansas University
"Looking back to the three
years at Kansas University,"
says Harry Wever, "I am
proud to be a KU-man and of
having had the chance of earn-
ing my BS degree in business
administration."
While studying twelve to
fourteen hours a day and at-
tending summer sessions, Har-
ry completed the four-year
curriculum in three years. He
graduated in January this
year and returned to work
early this month in Comp-
troller's-Systems & Data Pro-
cessing.
Since he left Lago in Jan-
uary, 1964 as a LEAP stud-
ent, Harry never returned to
Aruba during his vacations.
But he did a lot of traveling
in the United States. He vis-
ited all the states east and
south of Kansas and in all
crossed more than thirty
States.
During his three years at
Kansas University, he was
twice chosen to attend the
birthday celebration of Ex-
President Harry S. Truman.
Many foreign students are in-
vited by Mr. Truman to at-
tend his anniversary party.
They then congratulate him in
their own language.. On this
occasion, Mr. Wever was a
good-will ambassador for Aru-
ba with his "Masha Pabien."
At Kansas University, which
has a student body of over
15,000, including many for-

Your Kite in The Air.

Of Power Lines Beware
The season for kite flying recently started in Aruba. Through
the centuries, this sport has been practiced by young and old.
An Englishman by the name of George Pocock, who lived in
the early 1800, kited himself into fame with. a carriage that
was powered by a pair of large kites. It moved along at the then
phenomenal speed of 20 miles an hour or so. One windy day
Pocock actually managed to travel 113 miles in his wind-blown
carriage.
The spread of civilization, though, has begun to interfere
with the ancient sport. Now youngsters sometimes learn with
tragic consequences that telephone and power lines seem to have
an almost magnetic attraction for kites.
With this in mind, the National Safety Council suggests you
Instruct your youngsters in the following safety procedures:
- Fly kites in a level, open space away from power lines, airports,
trees and street traffic.
- If the kite should become entangled in power lines, leave it. It is
better to lose a kite than to risk your life.
- Kites should be flown only in dry weather. A wet string may con-
duct electricity down to the flyer.
- Kite strings should not contain any metallic fibers, tinsel or wire.
They conduct electricity, and should the kite become entangled in
a power line it could result in death or serious injury.
- Kites should not be flown over radio and.television aerials.
-Don't fly your kite if the wind is freakish or changeable.
- Don't use protruding frames on a kite, because when swerving
during takeoff, the kite may hit other children, and cause serious
eye injury.

Araba youngsters who wapt
to further their education
abroad again have a chance to
do so through the Lago Schol-
arship Foundation. Applica-
tions for Lago scholarship
grants may be obtained from
. A. Nicolaas, GOB Room
179, phone 9-2527. These ap-
plications must be returned
not later than April 21 for the
1967/68 school year.
This year, to be eligible to
apply for a scholarship grant,
an applicant must have at
least a MULO-B, UTS, HBS-
A or B diploma. Also, the ap-
plicant must meet one of the
four eligibility criteria.
He must be


(1) a perlnanent Staff & Reg-
ular employee of Lago.
(2) a legally recognized depen-
dent child of a permanent
Staff & Regular employee.
(3) a legally recognized depen-
dent child of a deceased
Staff & Regular employee or
annuitant, or other Staff &
Regular retiree.
(4) a non-employee born in -the
Netherlands Antilles of An-
tillean parents, who receiv-
ed the majority of his edu-
cation in Aruba.
Under special circumstan-
ces, an individual not covered
by the above eligibility crite-
ria may apply for scholarship
consideration.
An applicant must also sub-
mit the following documents
with the completed applica-
tion:
(1) Income tax statement for
the previous year, if ap-
plicant is employed. If
not employed, a copy of
his parents' income tax

the school he plans to attend.
This school must be accredit-
ed.
In the selection of scholar-
ship grants, consideration will
be given only to those appli-
cants who:
Have high scholastic stand-
ing.
Receive favorable school re-
commendation.
Perform well on tests admin-
istered by the L.S.F. Commit-
tee.
In addition, the applicant's
proposed course of study will
be considered in relation to its
application to the development
and well-being of the Aruban
community. No assistance will
be given for courses of study
available in the Netherlands
Antilles.
Atpresent, forty-nine stud-
ents are receiving higher edu-
cation abroad, 15 in the USA
and 34 in Holland. Since the
Foundation was instituted in
1957, 241 Aruban youngsters
have been assisted in obtain-
ing advanced education.

He has been an area super-
visor in Mechanical-M&C since
March, 1965.
Presently an area supervi-
sor in Mechanical-M&C, Ga-
briel A. Henriquez originally
came to Lago as an Appren-
tice D in Mechanical-Pipe. He
rose to the position of Pipe-
fitter A in 1944 and to fore-
man in 1956. He transferred
to Mechanical-M&C in March
1956 as an area supervisor.
Miguel Jacobs joined Lago
in 1937 and worked all of his
30 years in the Storehouse. He
served for four years in mili-
tary service and returned to
Lago in August, 1945. He be-
came a Storehouse Helper A
in 1946 and a Cargo Checker
in 1948. In April last year, his
title was changed to Materials
Clerk 3.
Juan De Cuba worked his
first two years in Mechanical-
Welding and then for about a
year in the Boiler Craft. In
December, 1940, he transfer-
red to Storehouse where he
worked as section head in the
various sections. His title was
changed to Materials Clerk 1
in April last year.
Damian Tromp's first as-

automobile .repair, motor re-
winding and battery service
shop of H. Kelly, the Simeon
Antonio Grocery of S. Boek-
houdt, the Max Tinshop of
Max Reemnet, apd ZA's Shop
& Trading of Gaston E. Illis.

Rudolf Chin Dental Laboratory

Mr. Chin A Loi, who has
been an attest clerk in Comp-
troller's, is now a dental tech-
nician. With a Lago scholar-
ship he studied mechanical
dentistry at the McCarrie
School of Mechanical Dentis-
try in Philadelphia, Pennsyl-
vania.
He was awarded the school's
diploma after completing the
7-month training He also took
a two-month training at the
Laboratories of- Nobilium Pro-
cessing Inc.-,in working with
chrome and wlite metal used
in making dentures.
The Rudolf Chin Dental La-
boratory is equipped to make
full or partial artificial den-
tures, crowns and bridges
from impressions made by a
dentist.
Mr. Chin A Loi invested
over FIs. 10,000 in equipping
and building his dental labor-
atory.
He was assisted by the New
Small Business Committee in
acquiring work benches, a sur-
plus desk and other materials
from Lago.

Kelly's Automobile Repair &
Rewinding Shop

Mr. Kelly, who left Lago as
a Machinist A after 29 years
of service, now dedicates his
time to his automobile repair,
motor rewinding and battery
service shop.
Some years ago, Mr. Kelly
started motor rewinding as.a
hobby. Later he took an Auto-
mobile Mechanic course from
I.C.S. and a self-taught, home
study course in electric motor
repair.
In his 20-meter-square shop,
Mr. Kelly repairs and recon-
ditions motors. He is highly
specialized in repairing and
rewinding all kinds of genera-
tors, relays and alternators.
He also has special training
and long experience in servic-
ing batteries.


H. KELLY is an expert in rewinding all

Being a machinist, Mr.
Kelly has two lathes in his
shop for fabricating parts or
doing machining work. He
purchased some surplus equip-
ment from Lago, such as a
milling machine, a hydraulic
arbor press,.a grinder, a lap-
ping machine and other mat-
erial.
He started devoting his full
time to the shop in November
last year, assisted by four
helpers. So far, he invested
over Fls. 15,000 in equipment
and building.
For the future, Mr. Kelly
plans to extend his shop to do
autobody repairing and spray
painting. His shop is at Santa
Cruz, Siribana 21, Phone 8034.
Boekhoudt's Grocery .
The Simeon Antonio Groc-
ery at Alablancastraat 19,
phone 2026, is owned by S.
Boekhoudt. In running the
grocery, Mr. Boekhoudt, who
was once an assistant opera-
tor in the Refining Division, is
assisted by his wife.
The grocery, which has a
varied stock of dry goods, fro-
zen and refrigerated foods, al-
so has a liquor license. Though
sales are over the counter, the
Simeon Antonio Grocery also
makes home deliveries.
Mr. Boekhoudt started the
grocery in August, 1966 and
invested about Fls. 30,000 in
the building and stock items.
To help start his business,

Mr. Reemnet says his shop

from galvanized, steel, copper
and aluminum plate with a

Along with an experienced
tinsmith, Ignovio Briezen who
has 30 years' experience in
Lago's Tinshop, Max is spec-
ialized in fabricating mufflers,
babbitt bearings, oil strainers,
shower heads, funnels, ducts,
and all kinds of sheet metal
work.
Mr. Reemnet followed a
course in Sheet Metal Layout
at Lago, a night course in
drawing and welding at the
Aruba Technical School, and a
welding training under Lago's
Retraining Program.
At present Mr. Reemnet is
working for both local busin-
essmen and the public in gen-
eral. In addition to fabricat-
ing parts in his shop, Mr.
Reemnet also performs instal-
lation work at the location de-
sired.
Illis' Shop & Trading tirm
ZA's Shop & Trading, loc-
ated on Bernhardstraat 178,
Phone 5229, is under general
managership of Gaston E. Il-
lis. He had been a 29-year La-
go employee who worked in
Mechanical-Engineering.
The grocery's name is der-
ived from the last two letters
of the name of Illis' mother,
Eliza. The business, which
opened January, 19, 1967, re-
quired an investment of about
Fls. 20,000. Mr. Ilis has two
assistants in running the bus-
iness. In addition to the gro-
cery, he has an importing and
exporting branch. It exports
to and imports from all parts
of the world, retail or whole-
sale. Other services offered
are as manufacturer's repres-
entatives, commission agents
and mail-order dealers.
Some special items the
store is offering includes: com-
pact first aid kits for auto,
home, office and camping;
black wood carvings imported
from Tanzania, Africa; novel-
ty transistor radios, West
German-made cuckoo clocks
and a variety of rare articles.
Through the New Small
Business Committee, Mr. lis
purchased a desk, a typewriter
and a steel cabinet from Lago.

Two of Four CYI Winners Earn Gifts

In Addition to Cash During February


Four employees from three
departments received cash
awards for their suggestions
during February. Two of them
received a bonus gift in addi-
tion to their cash prize for be-
ing new suggesters.
Dominico Ceerman, an as-
sistant operator in Process-
Refining, was a new sugges-
ter. He earned Fls. 45 for his
idea and also a bonus gift. He
suggested to install a mercoid

Fair? Students from thirteen schools are al-
ready working on projects for the fair. Dead-
line for sending in projects is May 31, 1967.
Eligible to participate in the fair are all stud-
ents from grade seven or higher of MULO
schools, all students from technical schools,
H B S, Huishoudschool (Home Economics
School), and students up to 21 years attend-
ing night classes at a recognized government
or denominational school. Students' projects
will be exhibited in Oranjestad on June 5
and 6, and in San Nicolas, on June 9 and 10.
