"Lago Now Faces Challenge of Solving

Fuel Oil Sulphur Problem", Says Siegele
"One of Lago's immediate challenges is to develop a workable
solution to the fuel oil sulphur problem," said Lago's new Vice
President H. L. Siegele recently.
"The entire petroleum industry must meet the standards of
the new air pollution legislation in the U.S.," he added and

pointed out that New York
City, "a sizable Lago fuel oil
customer," has set standards
that will require large capital
investment to meet. "It's going
to be a struggle just to hold
the customers and prevent them
from turning to other energy
sources."
Mr. Siegele, who came to La-
go February 1 on a rotational
assignment, had been Assistant
Production Manager in Creole's
Caracas office. He replaces J.
M. Ballenger who is now Man-
ager of Creole's Refining De-
partment.
A chemical engineering gra-
duate from Kansas State Uni-
versity, Mr. Siegele joined Cre-
ole more than 19 years ago in
Maracaibo. A baseball enthu-
siast, Mr. Siegele "touched
base" at every one of Creole's
production operations in Mara-
caibo, Quirequire, Caripito, Tia
Juana and Caracas.
His many years in Venezuela
have made an impression on Mr.
Siegele who sprinkles his con-
versation with Spanish words.
Discussing his Aruba assign-
ment, Mr. Siegele remarked: "I
am impressed with the fine
'ambiente' here. Everyone I've
met has been 'muy amable'."
Actually, he visited Aruba and

Lago in the past as Creole's re-
presentative at the Production-
Refining-Marine meetings. The
last time was in 1960.
"I always enjoyed the Lago
meetings because I got a chance
to visit the beautiful 'playas'.
I'm sure the beaches are a real
attraction for 'turismo'."
During his Creole career, Mr.
Siegele has worked closely with
PR/IR Manager B. E. Nixon,
Comptroller K. D. Seeger, Ref-
ining Division Superintendent
W. D. Wolke and former Lago
Vice President R. E. Nystrom.
In Venezuela he also met Miss
B. McCarthy, a Seroe Colorado
school teacher, Jack Kelleway,
Oil Movements Project man-
ager and Miss Westfall of Lago
Hospital, when they were both
employed in Caripito.
Both Mr. Siegele and his
wife Mary were active in com-
munity activities in Venezuela,
where he was president of a
Caracas Parent-Teacher Asso-
ciation and a member of his
church's board of deacons.
The Siegeles have four chil-
dren, three girls (15, 13, 7),
and a boy (5). In their spare
time they enjoy the beach and
other outdoor activities and are
avid bridge players.

Siegele: Nos Ta Enfrenta Desafio Pa

Solve Problema di Azufre den Fuel Oil
"Uno di Lago su desafio inmediato ta pa desarolja un solution
practice pa e problema di azufre den fuel oil," asina e Vice Pre-
sident nobo di Lago H. L. Siegele a bisa recientemente.
"Henter industrial petrolera mester cumpli cu e standard di e
leynan nobo contra impurificacion di aire na Estados Unidos,"

el a agrega y a remarca cu
New York, cu ta "un client
basta grand di fuel oil di La-
go", a establece standardnan
cual lo obliga nos di inverti hopi
placa pa cumpli cu nan. "Lo
mester di un lucha fuerte sola-
mente pa nos tene e clientenan
y preveni nan pa nan no bai
busca otro fuente di energia".
Sr. Siegele, kende a bini na
Lago Februari 1 ariba un asig-
nacion di intercambio, tabata
un Asistente Gerente di Pro-
duccion den oficina di Creole
na Caracas. El ta reemplaza.J.
M. Ballenger kende awor ta Ge-
rents di Creole su Departamen-

Siendo un graduado den en-
ginieria quimica for di Univer-
sidad di Estado Kansas, Sr.
Siegele a drenta servicio di Cre-
ole mas cu 19 anja pasi na Ma-
racaibo. Siendo un fanatico di
beisbol, Sr. Siegele a "toca
base" na cada uno di e sitionan
di operation di production di
Creole na Maracaibo, Quire-
quire, Caripito, Tia Juana y
Caracas.
Su hopi anjanan na Venezu-
ela a haci un impression ariba
Sr. Siegele, kende ta usa pala-
branan Spanjo de vez en cuando
den su conversation.
Discutiendo su asignacion na
Aruba, Sr. Siegele a remarca:

The main lounge of the Esso

sections and transformed into
a "Dutch Room", an "Anglo-

many tables, expertly decorat-

dental tools with pearl-studded

Purified Hydrocarbons Used by ERE

And Nestl6 to Make Quality Protein
Details of a process being developed by Esso Research and
Engineering Company and Nestle Alimentana, S.A. for produc-
ing quality proteins from high purity hydrocarbons were dis-
closed recently.
The companies said that although a number of technical and

economic problems remain to
be solved, they felt the process
could result in a major new
source of food within the next
decade.
The process has been suc-
cessfully tested in a small pilot
plant in several runs of more
than 700 hours duration. A new
and much larger pilot plant is
now operational in the U.S. The
product from this larger plant
will be used first for safety and
nutrition tests and later for
.development of various food
formulations.
Early last year, the Standard
Oil Company (New Jersey),
the parent company of Esso
Research, and Nestl: announc-
ed they were working on a
joint program to develop a pro-
tein-rich food source through a
process in which micro-organ-
isms are nourished by selected
purified hydrocarbons.
The key element in the pro-
duction of a single cell protein
(SCP, as it is called) with hy-
drocarbons is a continuous fer-
mentation process which in-
cludes a means for sterilizing
and drying the cells. A highly
sophisticated technology is in-

volved in the production of this
SCP material. The process uti-
lizes high-purity hydrocarbons
which minimizes the need for
subsequent purification.
Since the SCP from hydro-
carbons represents a new ap-
proach to nutrition, it is felt
that extensive studies have to
be made to confirm the whole-
someness of the product. Sev-
eral institutions in the U.S. and
Europe are now involved in this
phase of the work, carrying out
both short- and long-term in-
vestigations of the effects of
SCP on laboratory animals pre-
paratory to clinical tests.

pa produci protein di calidad
for di hidrocarburo di alta pu-
reza a ser public reciente-

un solo c6lula usando hidrocar-
buros, ta un process di fermen-
tacion continue cual ta inclui
un manera pa sterilisk y seca e

hidrocarburo di gran pureza, cu
ta reduci necesidad di purifica-
cion te un minimo.
Ya cu protein cu un solo
