Oil Is Most Competitive Among Largest Industries Do a few large companies control the oil business? The answer is NO. Few in- dustries throughout the world are as competive as the oil in- dustry. Take for instance the refineries. Among the hundreds of companies engaged in refin- ing petroleum, only a few are classified as "majors". Lago is one of them and it has to com- pete worldwide not only against these "majors" but against all, small and large. In marketing, competition is exceptionally keen at both the wholesale and retail levels. In addition to the so-called "ma- jors", there are tens of thous- ands of independent whole- salers or jobbers selling gaso- line, heating oil, or both, throughout the world. The hun- dred thousands of retail gaso- line dealers catering world's automotive needs are also com- peting to sell the best gasoline at the lowest price. Since Lago is selling its pro- ducts to scores of places throughout the world, its gaso- line is also in the race of com- petition. Jan. 13. CALYPSONIAN STING RAY LORD SWEET-SWEET MR. SPARROW S W Is ft Sunspot Activity That Caused Heavy Rainfalls In Last Few Months? During the last three months of 1966, Aruba had abundant showers acoounting for 15.38 inches of rainfall and bringing the year's total to a peak of 24.50 inches in the last five years. This was about twice as much at in 1965. Except for the months of February (2.20 inches) and June (3.31 inches), the first nine months were relatively dry, with total rainfall of 9.12 inches. Last year's rainfall figure contains one definite indication, however. In August last year Max Sand, formerly of Mechanical-M&C, and Ed O'Brien (on loan to Esso Pappas, Greece) made some predictions about heavy rainfalls during the next months. They based their prediction on their study of the correlation of sunspot activity and rainfall during the past 35 years. On a chart they plotted the cycle of heavy sunspot activity occurring about every 11 years, along with the rainfall statistics for the 35-year period. They discovered that the third year before and the third year after sun- spot peaks usually were years with relatively heavy rainfall (1933, 1938, 1944, 1950, 1955 and 1961, as shown on chart above). They also knew that 1966 would be the third year before the n of sunspot activity (see chart). Although only 7.57 inches of rain len from January to July last year, the heavy rainfalls in later P Actividd months brought a high record Ta scuviuau Ul (24.50 inches, see chart for A CAu Inbida dei 1966) for the past five years.
