Steady Stream of Tourists
Amidst the celebrations of Statute Day on December 15, 1966,
the new Manchebo Beach Hotel was officially inaugurated by
Acting Lt. Governor I. de Cuba.
The motel-style hotel, situated on the beach near the Eagle
Pier, presently has thirty-six rooms, with twelve more to be


available this month.
Built at a cost of nearly one
million guilders, the hotel is
owned by the Manchebo Beach
Hotel N.V. and is managed by
Herman Schotborgh.
Special facilities for the tour-
ists include a sunken pool bar,
piano bar and a swimming pool,
which is still under construc-
tion.


For the pleasure and conven-
ience of tourists, the hotel also
arranges fishing trips, charter
boats and special shopping
tours to Curacao.
The construction of the Man-
chebo Beach Hotel has provided
job opportunities to approxima-
tely forty employees.

Owning Your Own Business
In the last year or so, many Lago employees rose to the level
of manager of their own small business. Former Lago employees
are now operating or are in the process of setting up about fifty
new small businesses throughout the island.
In making the very important decisida of going into their own
business and in selecting the type of business venture, the men
were assisted by the members of the Small Business Committee.
The joint Union-Management committee was set up in 1965 as
part of the 4-point Job Transition Program. It is headed by
Lloyd R. Monroe. Its members are: J. Diaz; E. A. Beaujon, C.
Yarsagaray and A. Theysen.

New Skills Learned by 88 Employees

In Lago-Sponsored Retraining Program
Eighty-eight employees were presented with a certificate re-
cently for completing courses in Lago's retraining program. The
program included courses in welding, plumbing, carpentry, ma-
sonry, electricity and key punch operation.
The Retraining Program was started April 4, 1966 when five


employees took an orientation
session for a welding course. A
total of twenty-seven employees
completed the welding course.
These men received the Ameri-
can Society of Mechanical En-
gineers (ASME) welder's qua-
lification test papers. Instructor
was George F. Harris Jr. of Chi-
cago Bridge and Iron Company.
Sixteen men have completed
the basic carpentry course. Vi-
cente Semeleer conducted the
class.
Floriano Geerman was in
charge of the basic masonry
course. Theory and practical
training were given at the Con-
crete Plant.
Seventeen employees complet-
ed this training. It consisted of


sketch reading, practical work
such as foundation layout, er-
ecting a concrete block wall in-
cluding installation of door and
window frames, plastering,
dashing, and material handling.
In charge of the basic elec-
tricity house-wiring course was
Ricardo Geerman. Fifteen em-
ployees qualified for certificates
in this area.
The basic plumbing course
was given by Marco Stamper.
Five employees completed this
training.
Recently eight employees
completed the Key Punch oper-
ation course under leadership of
F. S. Ruiz of Comptroller's. All
courses were conducted on

a tests so far the APE-controlled floating


rig Caldrill I has set Gulf depth
about 80 miles off Texas.
In the deep waters of the
Continental Slope, conventional
anchors would not be economi-
cally practical to hold the ship
steady over the hole during
each core-drilling operation for
Humble Oil & Refining Com-
pany. On Caldrill I, a converted
navy ship, four outboard pro-
pellers are precisely controlled
by a computer. It is this auto-
matic positioning equipment
(called APE) which keeps the
ship in position in any depth of
water, without use of anchors,
by constant adjustment.
Each of the vessel's four out-

an electric motor. Two propel-
lers are mounted in the stern
and two in the bow. All four
are linked to an analog com-
puter on board the ship.
Signals from the computer
start and stop each motor au-
tomatically to maintain the
ship's position directly over the
core hole. These also control the
speed of the propellers and the
direction in which the force of
each is exerted.
With APE, drilling can con-
tinue and the 4-1 inch pipe can
be handled from the deck of the


ship in 20-foot waves and 40-
mile-per-hour winds. Drilling is
done through a "moon pool" or
hole 10 feet across in the center
of the 176-foot ship.
Humble began the deep-water
research program in Feb. 1966.
Twenty-four core holes have
been drilled so far in the Con-
tinental Slope area off Texas,
and ultimately the whole Texas-
Florida slope will be explored.
The slope angles downward
from the Continental Shelf and
has water depths ranging from
600 to 6,000 feet. The width of
the Continental Shelf ranges
from about 40 to 125 miles off-
shore. In compliance with In-
terior Department regulations
core drilling is being limited to
1,000 feet of sediment and in
water more than 650 feet deep.


Stamper and Ponson Are
Winners of December CYI
Servenio Stamper, an instru-
mentman in Mechanical, was a
new suggester for December,
1966.
His idea called for extending
the crank case exhaust pipe on
compressors Nos. 3 to 8 to the
top of the GAR-1 building.
In addition to Fls. 25 as ini-
tial award, he was awarded a
bonus gift for being a new sug-
gester.
Hendrik O. Ponson, a process
helper A in Process-Utilities,


was another CYI winner for
December. He suggested to re-
model the oil burner pans or
retainers by installing covers
on them. This idea earned him
an initial award of Fls. 50.

Ex-Lago Employees Become a ers

Of Their New Small Busineos Ventures
A new life and new challenges start for many former Lago
employees as they embark on their plans for a new small busin-
ess. So far about fifty men have their own small business or are
setting one up. They may have a hectic time before getting start-
ed, but as they see their dreams materialize, they become more


reassured of achieving their
ambition of managing their
new business. Potential em-
ployment offered by these bus-
inesses may approach 200 in
future.
Wever's Machine Shop
J. F. (Chico) Wever, once an
assistant zone supervisor of
Mechanical-Shop and Garage,
is the manager of the Aruba
Technical Machine Shop located
at Balashi, office phone 2870.
After being with Lago for 30
years, Mr. Wever decided to
start his own machine shop. In
his 50 by 100 feet shop, Mr.
Wever can perform machine
and welding jobs, fabricate
parts and do safety valve and
pump repairs.


His shop, a steel-frame build-
ing that was once the old Lago
drydock machine shop, requir-
ed an investment of over
Fls. 200,000. The building and
nearly all of the equipment and
tools were purchased from La-
go's surplus equipment and ma-
terials.
The shop, opened August 22
last year, employs nine work-
ers on a regular schedule with
a maximum of fourteen men
during peak periods. Except a
son, who is an Aruba Technical
School graduate, all his em-
ployees are experienced ex-La-
go employees.
Most of the job orders are
received from Lago, while
others come from the Aruba
Chemical Industries and other
local enterprises.
Mr. Wever feels that in set-
ting up a business it's impor-
tant to make a thorough survey
of the market possibilities for
your products or services. He
stated he is grateful for the as-
sistance which many of his La-
go friends gave him in setting
up and running his new shop.


Ho Sing Loy's Machine Works
The Aruba Valve and Mach-
ine Works N.V. opened its doors
for business October 20, 1966
with W. (Joe) Ho Sing Loy as
manager. Mr. Eo Sing Loi was
a supervisor Cargo Room in
Mechanical-Materials.
His 30 by 130 feet shop at
Balashi employs fourteen men.
Three of them are experienced
ex-Lago employees and the
others are on training as metal
tradesmen.
The shop is equipped for
handling reclamation of valves,
fittings and flanges. In addi-
tion, the shop does some weld-
ing and sandblasting work.
The company already invest-
ed Fls. 70,000 in the business,


while total investment will
reach approximately Fl. 100,000
in the future.
Through the assistance of
Lago and the New Small Bus-
iness Committee, Mr. Ho Sing
Loy purchased much of his
shop machines and equipment
from Lago. He also receives
most of his job orders from
Lago. His office phone is 1710.
One suggestion Mr. Ho Sing
Loy has for prospective small
business operators is to "apply
for the necessary government
permits and licenses well in ad-
vance."
Before going into business,
Mr. Ho Sing Loy prepared him-
self by taking an ICS Business
Management course.
Boat Builder J. Arends
Once a dock foreman in Oil
Movements, J. N. (Janchi)
Arends is now a boat builder.
He already built a 24-foot
houseboat, which is stationed
at Savaneta.
Powered by an outboard mo-
tor, the houseboat is fully

Teagle Scholarship Winner L. V. Lewis

Earns BS and MBA Degrees at Cornell
Lincoln V. Lewis, an ex-Lago employee and a 1960 Teagle
Scholarship winner, received his bachelors degree from Cornell
University in 1964, in industrial labor relations. In June, 1966
he obtained his masters in public administration from that same


university.
Lincoln left Lago as a proc-
ess clerk after nearly twelve
years of service.
A U.S. citizen, Lincoln is now
the educational coordinator of
New Opportunities for Water-
bury, Inc. In his new post, he is
responsible for developing and
coordinating all education pro-
grams conducted by N.O.W. and


those in which the agency par-
ticipates in cooperation with the
City School Department and
other public and private organ-
izations.
Lincoln is the son of an ex-
employee, Mrs. Mina Sam. She
had been a staff nurse at the
Lago Hospital who retired af-
ter 26 years of service.
Lincoln earned his
BS degree at Cor-
nell University in
1964 with a Teagle
Scholarship and his
masters in June,
1966.

persons. The houseboat, built
at a cost of approximately

and local citizens. It took Mr.
Arends about three months to
build his first fiberglass-coated
houseboat. He now plans to
build another one.
Mr. Arends, who resides at

plans to order surplus PT boats
for rebuilding to fishing boats
