Prevent Fire: Save Human Lives & Property
The saying "An Ounce of Prevention Is Worth a Pound of
Cure" also applies to fires. It certainly costs less to prevent them
than to put them out and sum up the damage done.
At Lago every employee is not always aware of fires occur-
ring. We usually hear only about the larger fires. During 1965,
however, we have had 84 small fires at Lago. For the nine
months of this year, we had only 49 small fires.
Though they were small, these fires might have developed into
bigger fires if not controlled in time.
These fires mostly occur on the units and in the laboratories
or include trash fires in Seroe Colorado area. Usually, fires on
the units are experienced during repairs. In the labs fires occur
during testing.
There are, in addition, a number of unreported fires. Some-
times these are put out by using steam hoses and then they are
not reported. It's essential to report all fires, because some fires

a. Practicing good housekeeping. This will prevent having unne-
cessary materials around to help develop a fire.
b. Proper labeling of containers and electrical equipment. Also,
adequate insulation of all electrical appliances and equipment.
c. Strict observance of No-Smoking regulations and "Danger"
signs.
d. Use of proper work permits for the job.
e. Reporting oil spills or leakages right away.
f. Switching off all electrical appliances or equipment when not
in use or when uncontrolled.
g. Know how to give the fire alarm, (call 2222) and know how
to use an extinguisher.
h. Keep fammable liquids tightly covered.
i. Close valves on acetylene and other gas cylinders when not in
use.
j. Advise Fire Maintenance Group whenever extinguishers, hoses
or hydrants have been used.
k. In general, be alert and report all conditions that may cause a
fire.

Survey Shows More Training Can Improve Your Position
Training and progress go hand in hand whether in industry,
government or on an individual basis. Since both business and
the community at large are composed of people, it is when the T nin n qi s a

Progress is the result of

from personal initiative. But of
what value to the individual is
personal initiative? Does it
show in his pay check?
A recent computer survey of
personnel records at Lago in-
dicated that the amount of
training an individual under-
takes on his own initiative pays
off in better and higher paying
jobs.
In making the survey the
personnel records of all Lago
employees, except department
managers, were examined. Man-
agement members were divided
into three groups: Upper, mid-
dle and lower. Salaried employ-
ees were divided into five groups
and fixed rated employees com-
posed a single group. The sur-
vey then recorded the average
number of courses per group
and the average service.
While there was a slight var-
iation among the salaried
groups, the statistics for the


management members confirm-
ed the training factor as being
significant. The three groups
were almost identical in length
of service, but the upper group
averaged five courses per man,
while the other two groups
averaged 4.5 and 3.5, respective-
ly.
The salaried groups also con-
firmed the relationship between
personal initiative and training
and position although there was
a variation of .1 between groups
C and D. The table below gives
the breakdown.

Eighth Esso Motor Hotel In Europe

Now Serves Visitors To Italian Alps
The eighth Esso Motor Hotel in Europe has opened its doors
at Courmayeur in one of the most beautiful year-round resort
areas of Northern Italy.
Just a mile from the Italian exit of the year-old Mt. Blanc
tunnel connecting Italy and France, the Courmayeur Motor Hotel


offers 50 rooms, 106 beds, food
service and discotheque, as well
as lounges and other public
rooms. A service station prov-
ides round-the-clock attention
for motorists in transit or at
the hotel.
Opening a year ago of the
7.2-mile tunnel through Mt.
Blanc, sometimes called the
"subway of Europe", has made
the Aosta valley readily acces-
sible to visitors from France,
Switzerland and other coun-
tries. Courmayeur had been for
many years a popular winter
and summer resort for Italians.
Other Esso motor hotels in
Europe are located in Brescia,

for tourists or businessmen to
travel comfortably from North-
ern Sweden to mid-Italy stop-
ping each night at an Esso mo-
tor hotel. At all stops the same

service and car servicing will
be available from the multilin-
gual sTaff. The Esso mo6tr hb-
fels are operated by Motel Ser-
vices, Inc., an affiliate of Stan-
dard Oil Company (New Jer-
sey) with headquarters in Lon-
don.
