Princess Beatrix and Prince
Claus now have a Lago refinery
of their own. They won't be able
to refine 440,000 barrels a day
with it, but the miniature Cat
Cracker and floating roof tank
they received from Lago will
bring back fond memories of
their visit to Aruba.
On July 22, Lago employees
presented a handmade smoking
table to the royal couple.
The table top, made of waya-
ci wood (lignum vitae), is cut
in the outline of Aruba. On top
of the table stands a miniature
replica of the Cat Cracker and a
floating roof tank both con-
structed from Allegheny metal
(a stainless steel alloy). This

Three employees in the Technical Department and the Market-
ing Division were recently promoted. The men and their new po-
sitions are Bennett S. Whitney to Division Superintendent in
Technical-Laboratories, Julian F. Mote to Division Superinten-
dent of Technical's Process Engineering Division, and Arturo E.


Thijzen to Operations Supervi-
sor in Marketing Division. All
have been effective since July
1.
Mr. Whitney started his ca-
reer with Lago as a student en-
gineer. He spent his 21 years of
service in the Technical-Labora-
tories advancing in the group
head categories. In October,
1962, he was promoted to Senior

metal takes a high shine and
resists tarnishing. Inside the
reactor of the Cat Cracker is a
gold cigarette lighter. The
floating roof tank serves as a
cigarette container.
The table is approximately
two feet long and weighs about
20 lbs. Its top is one and a half
inches thick and is varnished to
a high luster. The whole project
took two weeks to complete.
Wayaca is a dark, hard wood.
It is so hard it sinks when it is
put in water (one cubic foot
weighs 76 lbs.). The bushings
supporting ship propeller shafts
are frequently made from this
slow growing wood. The tree
from which this particular cut
of wood was taken was over 200
years old.
The table was designed and
built by three talented Lago
craftsmen M. Christiaans
and J. Arrindell from the tin
shop and D. Tromp from the
paint shop. These same three
employees constructed the em-
blem commemorating the Neth-
erlands Marines' 300th anniver-
sary last December.
In constructing this gift J.
Arrindell and M. Christiaans
started with flat sheet material.
They used a drill press to shine
and file the metal, but did all
of the shaping by hand.

tion he held before his recent
promotion.
A M.Sc. graduate from Trini-
ty College in Dublin, Ireland,
Mr. Whitney majored in organic
chemistry. He also has had ex-
perience in the Inspection Sec-
tion and Analytical Develop-
ment Sections of the Laborato-
ries.
Mr. Whitney is quite a sailor,
owning a sailfish and a ski
boat. He is also a Hi Fi enthu-
siast and enjoys furniture build-
ing. Mr. Whitney is married and
has one daughter 14 years old.
He intends to travel by freigh-
ter through the Panama Canal
to Los Angeles to visit his par-
ents for his next vacation.
Mr. Mote came to Lago in
September, 1965, from Esso
Standard Oil of New Jersey. He
had been previously employed
with Esso Standard Oil in Balti-
more and Bayway.
His original assignment at


Lago was as Process Foreman-
Refining Division. In May this
year, he transferred to Techni-
cal-Process Engineering, where
he has been acting Division Su-
perintendent.
A Ph.D. graduate in chemical
engineering from Virginia Po-
lytechnic Institute, Mr. Mote
majored in the field of unit
operation-molecular distillation
and liquid extraction. He also
took courses in process design
at Esso Research, economics
and automatic control at Hum-
ble.
Mr. Mote enjoys sailing on his
sailfish as well as exploring the
underwater world.


J. F. Mote
Mr. Thijzen joined Lago in
September 1952, as a Lago Vo-
cational Student in Industrial
Relations-Training Division. In
September, 1955, he was as-
signed as Senior Student B in
Technical-Engineering. He sub-
sequently advanced through the
ranks of Junior Engineering
Trainee, Engineering Trainee,
Junior Engineering Assistant,
and to Engineering Technician
in June, 1964.
Mr. Thijzen transferred to
Executive-Marketing in Septem-
ber, 1964, on special assign-
ment. Before his recent promo-
tion, he has been Supervisor-
Aircraft Fueling and Bunkering
in Marketing Division since A-
pril, 1965.

Just before their departure on Friday, July 22, H.R.H. Prin
cess Beatrix and H.R.H. Prince Claus once again expressed their
gratitude to Lago employees for, as they put it, "the warm, cor-
dial welcome and the beautiful gift."
I also wish to thank you personally for your cooperation and
special effort which helped make the royal visit a success. The
craftsmen receive my particular congratulations for the skill dis-
played in preparing the gift.
I know that on this occasion, as in the past, our employees
demonstrated excellent cooperation in getting the central shops
and refinery area neat and tidy.
This good housekeeping effort not only gives visitors a fine
impression of our job sites and work habits, but, more impol tant,
it gives our employees a more pleasant, healthy and safer place
to work.
Just as we had reasons for being in top shape to receive the

OLYMPIAD


Dramatic Moments And Action-Packed Events Mark

Twelfth A.S.U. Olympiad; Three Foreign Teams Participate
The A.S.U. sports queen elected for year 1966/1967 was Miss
Mercedes Oduber. Miss Oduber was sponsored by the fencing
club "Beau Geste".
The Twelfth Aruba Sport Union Olympiad was officially
launched by a colorful parade of sports delegations in the Wil-


helmina Stadium on July 8. The
program included speeches, pre-
sentation of sports queen candi-
dates, and the naming of Juan
Pablo as sportsman of the year.
Juan Pablo is a member of the
S.V. Dakota football team, the
champions of Aruba's top clas-
sification.
Sixteen Different Sports
The Olympiad, from July 8-
17, provided athletic contests,
feats of skill, and lots of thrills.
Of the 16 sports, the major at-
tractions were track and field
events, cycling, fencing, bil-
liards, boxing, and baseball.
The three visiting delegations
participating in the olympiad
were Curacao, Puerto Rico and


Venezuela.
Fencing matches held be-
tween Aruba and Puerto Rico
at the Eagle Club were won by
the Puerto Rican team 5-4.
The baseball series ended in
a sweeping victory for the Ven-
ezuelan team Sindicato de Tele-
fonos. They won the series by
defeating two of Aruba's top
teams, Heinekens and Esso.
In basketball, Districto Fede-
ral de Venezuela defeated Ply-
mouth and Aruba Jrs.
The Wilhelmina Stadium was
the arena for six events, Tivoli
Club for six and the Lago Sport
Park for four. Various island
clubs were host for the other
events.

Thessaloniki, Greece. He ac-
cepted a loan assignment for a
period of six to nine months as

safety advisor starting August
1.
This is the first such assign-
ment for Mr. O'Brien, who will
be in charge of setting up the
company's safety program.
