30-Year Service Awards, Gold Watches

Presented To Nine Long Service Men
Nine veteran Lago employees were special guests at a manage-
ment dinner at the Basi Ruti Hotel, Friday, May 27. They were
three 30-year-service men and six watch recipients.
The employees who received their 30-year emblems and certi-
ficates were Lovelock Hassell, Process-Refining, Benoit B. Croes,
Process-Oil Movements, and
Juan Croes, Mechanical-Pipe. July, 1948 and was promoted to
Mr. Hassell is presently a assistant shift foreman in Feb-

Lago's Special Educational Program Pays


Engineer Study For Outstanding Students


A new, all-expense paid scholarship program designed to pro-
duce more Antillean engineers was announced May 25, 1966 by
President W. A. Murray.
Officially named the "Lago Special Educational Program for
Outstanding Students," it is primarily aimed at the math and


science graduates of MULO-B,
HBS-B, UTS or equivalent
schools.
This program is different
from the Lago Scholarship
Foundation grants and the La-
go Educational Assistance Pro-
gram for employees. Both of
these will continue to be in ef-
fect.
In his announcement, Mr.
Murray pointed out that "this
investment in learning is neces-
sary to help meet Lago's grow-
ing requirements for profes-
sional and technical personnel.
Unless the present rate of en-
gineer graduates increases,"
Mr. Murray continued, "by 1972
Lago will be short more than
thirty-five engineers and other
professionals".
Under this program, Lago
pays the full cost of study as

Charles A. Stewart Jr. is
leaving Lago June 9 for Athens,
Greece, where he will be Comp-
troller for Esso Pappas.
Mr. Stewart, a University of
Pennsylvania graduate, came
from Libya to Lago in Septem-
ber, 1963 as an assistant comp-
troller.
He has recently been on a ro-
tational assignment as superin-
tendent of Mechanical-Materi-
als Division. Mr. Stewart also
served on the LEAP Commit-
tee.













Charles A. Stewart Jr.
Prior to coming to Lago, Mr.
Stewart was assigned with Es-
so Libya from 1960. Before
that, he was with Jersey Comp-
troller's from September, 1956
until February, 1960.
An avid sailing enthusiast,
Mr. Stewart was commodore of
the Aruba Yacht Club for the
1964/65 season. He also com-
pleted the Esso Club bowling
and softball leagues.
Mr. Stewart has been a mem-
ber of the Seroe Colorado
Church Board of Stewards from
1964/66 and was treasurer of
the Board in 1965.

Netherlands Antilles and the
college location.
Where necessary, Lago will
also pay all costs of attending
a preparatory school for one
year before entering the univer-
sity.
Applications will be consider-
ed for study in engineering or
some other field approved by
Lago. The company, in consul-
tation with the student, will de-
signate the courses to be taken
and will select the school.
To qualify for the new scholar-
ships, applicants must:
- have outstanding grades
- be recommended favorably by
his school
- score well on tests given by Lago
- expect to be a long-term resi-
dent of Aruba
- willing to make career with Lago.
Grants will not be based on
the financial need of the appli-
cant. Anyone is eligible whose
past record indicates the ability
to complete the rigorous four to
five-year engineering course.
Previously, Messrs, Murray
and Schindeler discussed Lago's
need for technical personnel
with the island school princi-
pals and teachers of MULO,
HBS and UTS schools.

Originally employed as a
student engineer by Standard
Oil Co. of New Jersey in July,
1939, Mr. Ballard joined Lago
in January, 1940 in that same
position in Technical-Lab. No. 1.
While assigned with Stand-
ard Oil Co. in 1942. Mr. Ballard
joined military service from
1942 to 1944. He returned to
Jersey Standard in September,
1944 and came back to Lago in
November, 1945 as a Chemist A
in Technical-Lab. No. 1.
After assignments in Process-
Light Oils Finishing, Receiving
& Shipping and Acid & Edele-
anu Plants, Mr. Ballard return-
ed to Technical-Laboratories as
Division Superintendent in Oc-
tober, 1964.
Mr. Ballard was born on
June 11, 1915, in Joplin, Mis-
souri, U.S.A.

Esso Pappas Inaugurates Refinery,

Ammonia And Petrochemical Facilities
On the plains of Macedonia, a few miles from the historic port
city of Thessaloniki, Greece, the Esso Pappas industrial complex
was formally inaugurated May 10. The complex, which includes
a 50,000-barrel-a-day refinery, a 105,000-ton-a-year ammonia
plant and petrochemical facilities, is expected to bring far reach-


ing benefits to Greece.
Special guests at the cere-
monies were their Majesties
King Constantine, Queen Anna
Maria and other members of the
Royal Family, Prime Minister
S. Stefanopoulos, members of
the Cabinet and Parliament.
The other 2,500 guests included
leaders in government, busin-
ess, finance and education from
Greece, Western Europe and
the United States, and employ-
ees of the complex and their
families.
Prime Minister Stefanopou-
los and other speakers hailed
the project as a major contri-
bution made to the Greek econ-
omy by private enterprise.
Ground was broken for the pro-
ject exactly two years ago, on
May 10, 1964.
Financial and technical as-
sistance for the refinery and
the petrochemical and ammonia
plants of the Esso Pappas in-
dustrial complex were supplied
by Standard Oil Company (New
Jersey) in a cooperative effort
with Thomas A. Pappas, well-
known Boston, Mass., business-
man and financier.

complex is the completed and
operating oil refinery providing
more than enough new capacity
to make Greece self-sufficient
in refined products, in addition
to supplying fuel and feed-
stocks to other units of the
complex. The ammonia plant
for fertilizers went on stream
late last month, petrochemical
plants for the production of
solvents, caustic soda, chlorine,
and base materials for vinyl
plastics will be completed be-
fore the end of this year.
Already completed and in
operation are underwater pipe-
lines for unloading tankers of
up to 65,000 dwt. in Thessalo-
niki harbor, and a man-made

Mr. Juan Croes is now a Pipe-
fitter A in Mechanical-Maint-
enance & Construction. He was
employed in June, 1935 as a
laborer 2nd class. Following a
break in service of nearly one
year, he was re-employed in
December, 1936. About a year
later, in November, 1937, he
transferred to Mechanical-Pipe,
where he progressed to his pre-
sent position.
The 25-year employees who
were presented gold service
watches are: Maximo Vries and
Enrique P. Trimon, Process-Oil
Movements; Alex Hassell, Pub-
lic & Industrial Relations; Ru-
dolf E. Polak, Comptroller's,
Serapio R. Tromp, Mechanical-
Materials; and Julian A. Thiel,

Venezuelan guest Jose Hernandez, the first honorary member
of the Independent Oil Workers' Union of Aruba, officially in-
augurated the new office at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, May 14. The
building is at Grensweg 7, San Nicolas. It cost about Fls. 51,500,
including furnishings. Lago paid Fls. 25,000 of the cost.
On hand to bless the building was Father van Baars O.P.
Among the many guests were Lago management representa-
tives; Lt. Governor O. S. Henriquez; John F. Rojas, IFPCW
representative for the Caribbean area; Carlos Pifierfia, president
of the Labor Bank of Fedepetrol and a Venezuelan Labor Deputy,
representing Fedepetrol; Hubert Spencer, PWFC president; and
Aruba Chemical Industries' representatives.
Following a welcome address by IOWUA President F. L. Ma-
duro, congratulatory words were spoken by Lt. Governor Henri-
quez, Mr. Rojas, Mr. W. A. Murray and Mr. Pifierua.
The building has nine rooms, including offices, a conference
room, pantry, and toilets. The airconditioned office was built by
contractor Jose Wever.

Venezuelan Ferry "Cordillera" Makes

First Trip From Punto Fijo to Aruba
After a 51-hour, 60-mile voyage against stiff winds, the Ven-
ezuelan ferry "Cordillera" berthed in Oranjestad Harbor Satur-
day, May 14, on her trial run from Punto Fijo, Venezuela.
Many spectators watched the "Cordillera" tie up at the Oranje-
stad pier at about 5:30 p.m. This marked the first call of a ferry-
boat to Aruba.
The ferry carried 185 persons and thirty automobiles. Cars
were stored below deck and the passengers were accommodated
on the inside deck. The ferry has bar and restaurant facilities.
Among the passengers were Secretary General and acting
Governor of Estado Falcon Dr. Felix Vargas, Bishop Francisco
Jose Iturriza, and Colonel Diego Valderrama.
After touring the island and shopping in Oranjestad, the Ven-
ezuelan guests returned to Punto Fijo, Monday afternoon, May 16.
