Just How Safe Are You on the Road?
Are you a safety hazard on the road?
You may say: "I have never scratched a car," or "I haven't
even sat behind a steering wheel." But we will not let you off that
easy. Traffic is something involving all of us. Sooner or later, in
one way or another, we can become involved in traffic accidents.
Remarks as: "I have driven a good many years without an ac-
cident," or "I don't even drive a car" are clinchers that decidedly
do not guarantee you will survive the increased traffic unsafe-
ness.
If all traffic accidents could be reduced to one single cause, it
would be an easy matter to prevent them. But it is not that sim-
ple. Many circumstances such as fatigue, rain, alcohol and care-
lessness can play a part. The decisive factor, however, is human
nature. And human nature is very unreliable.
A collision does not always depend on the behavior of the
driver who has broken the law. One can cause an accident as a
pedestrian: by the hesitant crossing of a street, by an unexpect-
ed movement on the sidewalk, by unintentionally distracting a
passing driver.
You may not be formally guilty. But you may have contributed
toward an unsafe traffic situation. You can while sitting in the
back of a car, influence the behavior of a driver. A sudden cry
or a remark that Uncle John's birthday present was left at home,
can lead to a sizable disaster. We are not always aware of the
mental position of the driver at i particular moment. Precisely
at the critical moment you can irritate him, frighten him, dis-
tract his attention.
If you do the driving, then the responsibility is much greater.
Even the most experienced driver can get rattled when his ci-
garette drops to the floor or when his windshield clouds over.
A fraction of a second is enough.

JOE KOCK, the owner of the Bringamosa zoo, tends to this

Hobby Develops Into National Attraction
What began as a hobby for Joe Kock is becoming a national
attraction for both local residents and tourists.
A variety of local and exotic birds and animals are a familiar
sight now at Bringamosa 9, Santa Cruz. Here Joe and his wife
Rubia, assisted by a few friends, are presently setting up what
promises to become the best assorted zoo in the Netherlands
Antilles.
Joe, a former Lago employee now with Aruba Chemical In-
dustries, has been dedicating all his spare time to this project
for over two and a half years. Once a horseman, Joe tradition-
ally still wears his cowboy suit and is called Joe Cowboy.
A man who is a great help to Joe in getting the animals and
birds is Rudolf (Dichie) Arends.
A number of large cages now contain several hundred birds
and animals. Work is underway to seggregate each species of
animals and birds in separate, more adequate cages. Plants and
trees will provide landscaping and shade for the animals. Many
of the cages have been donated by local merchants.
The zoo population includes a variety of local and exotic birds,
representatives of the reptile family headed by the boa constric-
tor, and different kinds of imported small animals.
In the future, Joe plans to add tigers, lions, bears and other
large animals to his zoo.
Keeping up with the Esso "Tiger-in-Tank" slogan, Joe also
kept a small tiger in his zoo for some time. However, it died
recently.
