Help Your Child Enjoy Vacation With the coming Easter school vacation, the nearly 18,000 Aruba school children will have some two weeks of leisure and gaiety away from school. This is a time of much activity both around the house and at the various recreation areas. Statistics show us that children are safer at school than at home. Another statistic shows that boys are more likely than girls to be involved in accidents. This was borne out by last year's in- jury experience of Lago employee family members. The sons of employees suffered 246 injuries in 1965. Their daughters sus- tained only 101 injuries. Many of the accidents happened during holiday periods, depressing the occasion. There's always a safe way to enjoy any vacation. These pointers may be of help: 1. Climbing is one activity children like, but it may prove fatal. 2. Making fires outdoors may cause a disaster. 3. Swimming is healthy for children, but a guardian should be around constantly. 4. Long exposures to the sun at the beach can cause serious sun- burns and sunstroke. 5. Don't let children go boating without proper supervision and life- saving equipment. 6. Hide-and-seek games? A lot of fun, but don't hide in empty re- frigerators or boxes which may cause suffocation. 7. It's a natural thing for children to be on the run when playing. However, falls and bumping into objects or into each other may cause serious trouble. 8. Discourage children against walking or running with objects in their mouth. 9. Warn children against playing with sharp objects. 10. Horseplay on the road or unsafe cycling can be a dangerous activity. 11. When children play outdoors, make sure they wear shoes. 12. Don't let young children roam about without supervision. 13. Keep poisonous substances out of children's reach, especially now that they have more time to explore. Otro punto di estadistica ta mustra nos cu much hombernan tin mas probabilidad di hanja desgracia cu much muher. Prue- ba di esaki ta e cifranan di anja pasi mustrando cuanto miem- bro di famia di empleadonan di Lago a hanja herida. Mucha hombernan a worde herida 246 biaha na 1965; much muhernan a hanja solamente 101 herida. 7. Ta masha natural cu muchanan ta coriendo ora nan ta hungando. Pero nan mester tene cuidao pa no dal cu cosnan den caminda, nan por cai, dal un cu otro, resultando den desgracia serio. 8. Desconseha muchanan di core of cana cu cos den nan boca. 9. For Peace of Mind, Say "Ah" Good health is a priceless possession. It's worth preserving. Certainly, but who likes being injected with a doctor's needle or seeing some of his blood go in a test tube? Unpleasant ? Yes. But what are the rewards? Well, it may save your life. Also, it gives you peace of mind to know you are in good health. In addition, healthy persons help make a healthy and dyna- mic community. To help preserve this price- less personal possession, Lago examines each employee about every two years. This check may bring to light a developing though unnoticed ailment. Most ailments are easy ta treat in the early stages, but delay may be critical in some cases. There have been many examples of the real benefits the examinations brought to the over 1000 em- ployees who were examined last year. M -- April 7, 1966 ARUBA ESSO NEWS April 7, 1966 Materials Division is Supply Life Line Helping Lago Refinery Operate Smoothly One vital operation of any industrial complex concerns the supply of all kinds of parts, tools and materials for the steady operation of its units and facilities. Mechanical's Materials Division is that supply "lifeline" that helps keep the refinery units at Lago running to meet competi- tion. The heartbeat of one unit may falter and even fail for lack of a vital part. It's there- fore the basic task of the Mate- rials Division to have the parts, tools, equipment and materials available wherever needed. Instrumental in its manifold operations are over one hundred men and women of the Division who have to do careful plan- ning, coordination and decision making to keep the supply line moving. The operations may in- clude the handling of heavy and bulky equipment like vessels towering some 30 feet high and 15 feet in diameter or some- thing like a 1'" copper tack. The yearly business handled by the Division is about six mil- lion dollars, but the lack of some essential part may cause the shutdown of a unit at a consi- derable loss. Therefore, some 41,000 stock items worth 3.2 million dollars are kept on hand. These include general supply items and spares for equipment used throughout the concession. Organizationally, the Mate- rials Division consists of four sections: Procurement & Cata- loguing, Operations, Commissa- ry and Community Services. The 25-man personnel of Pro- curement & Cataloguing, under Regional Supervisor K. T. Wong, are responsible for de- i Sm ciding when and where to place orders, for checking on competi- tive prices with suppliers, for follow-ups and for keeping pro- per records of the many thou- sands of items. A many-sided function is per- formed by the 34 men of Opera- tions Section, which is under Re- gional Supervisor J. A. Abra- hams. They receive, store, issue and deliver the materials. The Operations Section is divided in two groups: Cargo Receiving, Shipping and Materials Delivery System; and Stores and Sales Group. The supply line is maintained by four deliverymen who are the important links with plant and office operations. A constant responsibility of the Operations Section is to keep the materials in good condition while in storage. One way they achieve this is by plastic coating some of the materials in a dip- tank. Others are provided with protective wrapping. The division has four main storage places in various loca- tions with a total area of 750,000 square feet. The two- story west wing of the main Storehouse building contains some 19,000 items. The ware- house on the south across the street has some 16,000 stock items and a special electrical and instrument supply section. A vast area of over 600,000 square feet is the Pipe Yard or Location 70. Here lumber, bricks, oils, gases, pipes in var- ious sizes, lengths and shapes, loading hoses, furnace tubes up to 80 feet long and appropria- tion materials are stored. An- other location is the Cable Yard rear the Garage where many miles of electric cables are kept. The various warehouses of the Operations Section have a total of 120,000 square feet. The two other sections of the Materials Division are the Com- missary, headed by Leslie A. Lejuez, and the Seroe Colorado Community Services, under Ru- oy H. Yzer. The Materials Division is pre- sently headed by Charles A. Stewart, recently named as the new comptroller of Esso Pappas in Greece. S. JANSEN is in charge of filling orders for office sup- plies. S.
