Werleman, Publications Asst. Let's Be Selfish.... The idea that education is a good thing doesn't leave much room for discussion... Most of us accept this at face value... But leaving the subject at this point is of no use to us. If edu- cation is a good thing, then how can we personally benefit by more of it? This is a question which concerns all persons inter- ested in improving themselves and their economic standing. In the case of education, we owe it to ourselves to be specific, to be more selfish... Education takes time and effort. Yet, it is only of value when put to some use. A legitimate question about any kind of educational opportunity is: "How can I put this to use and profit by it?" Then, we should take action. The person ready to act and increase his education, quickly finds many possibilities open to him. To begin with, Lago's Educational Assistance Policy provides financial support in many cases. If the learning improves job performance and effectiveness, Lago will pay two-thirds of the cost after the course is successfully completed. At the present time, there are courses open to all employees in such areas as welding, carpentry, electricity, and many more will be offered partly on company time and partly on the em- ployees' time. Lago will bear the full cost for these courses. (See page 1, "Expanded Training Efforts...") From time to time, seminars are put on which may have either broad or specific job applications. In any case, Lago pays two- thirds of the cost for all employees completing these seminars. Recent seminars in Personal Finance and Process Control met with particular success. Another approach to the subject of education is to examine the many self-help courses available through the company library. With all these opportunities available it becomes increasingly more important that the best choice be made in terms of you, personally. What will help you most ? When it comes to improving ourselves, let's be specific, let's be practical... let's be selfish... Laga Nos Ser Egoista.... E idea cu education ta algu bon, no ta laga much lugar pa mas discusion... Tug Captains Undertake One-Year Study Program In Advanced Navigation Under their personal initia- tive, Lago tug captains will soon start an advanced navigation course. Lago has donated the use of the Reception Center for class meetings. The training, approximately one year, will qualify the tug- mates as captains in coastal maritime trade. They will be able to act as masters of coastal vessels up to 500 tons or of the size of the "Antilia". The classes, two hours twice a week, will be given by Assist- ant Harbor Master G. Katoen, and pilots P. C. Borstlap, A. J. J. Van Velzen and Th. W. Van Velzen. The course will cover subjects such as navigation, cargo hand- ling, seamanship, navigation and ship laws, and shipbuilding. S ENTRENAMENTO (Continua di pagina 1) pia pronto. Jones, President of Humble Oil & Refining Company in De- cember, 1965, published in ERE's The News. Man has propelled himself more than a hundred miles above the earth yet he has only a vague notion of what his own planet looks like five miles be- neath the surface of the oceans. No longer are we merely inter- ested in the surface of the oceans. Now we are interested in the potential wealth that lies within the waters and below them. In addition we are con- cerned with the oceans' military and international implications. Our seas offer the last great area for economic exploration on the planet. The greatest single protein bank on the earth is the ocean. In and beneath the waves are food, minerals, and energy in profusion. It has been estimated, that four-fifths of all life on earth exists in salt water. The problem is to conceive of programs that will make these resources available to us on an economic basis. Full economic utilization of the oceans will take a very long time, but un- derstanding and involvement on the part of industry can help cut courage The Seeking of "I down that waiting time, treaty of the International Con- Considering our total national vention on the Continental picture, it makes little economic Shelf, the right to develop mi- and social sense to spend tens of neral resources lying beyond the billions of dollars on space ex- shelf would go "to those nations ploration and to pinch pennies who first develop the technology insofar as oceanographic re- to exploit them." search is concerned.
