Only eight disabling injuries occurred to Lago employees last year while on the job. This figure includes cne fatality and represents 367 lost days. The disabling injury frequen- cy rate in 1965 improved to 1.68 (3.21 in 1964), but is still far away form Lago's best safety year 1963, when a frequency rate of .27 was achieved. The worst accident occurred at the PCAR on February 4, 1965, which claimed one fatal- ity. An employee received fatal injuries to the head and face caused by a piece of falling steel floor plate. Traffic islandwide in 1965 was not much safer than in 1964. Twelve traffic fatalities occurred in 1965 and material damages amounted to FIs. 485,907. In 1964, there had been 13 fatal traffic accidents and Fls. 517,205 in material dam- ages. The third class participating in the thirteen- week program began on Jan. 10. Over-all direc- tion of the program is under Joe D. Midwikis who is on loan from the Baton Rouge Refinery. The first phase of the program takes seven weeks and is used to teach fundamentals such as basic math, pressure fluid flow, etc. About seven- ty hours of field work is included for unit sketch- ing observing various operations taught in the class room. The second phase takes six weeks. During this time trainees qualify for a particular position. After qualifying they are assigned to a position and go on shift. The third phase is aimed at increasing the trainee's knowledge of his particular unit by: 1) The Job Learning Program technique. The JLP is on the trainee's own time and lasts until the trainee has a complete understanding of the unit. 2) The Carmody Trainer on which unit operations can be simulated. This is the latest medium of communication in operation at Lago. News relay by telephone at Lago began Feb. 1, 1965, as an im- proved means of communication to employees. An emergency communication medium, "Dial 5" had been used to offer news digest from the Diario and other news for over seven months. On September 21 of last year, a new piece of equipment iden- tical to the "Dial 5" unit was put in operation in the Tele- phone Exchange. This is a 2 feet wide and 9 feet high VMC recorder announcer assembly, or popularly called "Dial 7". This assembly includes hundreds of line connections to the telephone network, a magnetic tape on a recorder drum and an amplifica- tion unit. All this equipment is connected to the company as well as to the outside telephone network. This latter hookup to the island-wide telephone sys- tem was accomplished early this month as a convenience to em- ployee families and employees who are off duty. Another unit completes the "Dial 7" network. This is a re- mote control recorder-an- nouncer unit. It is located in Room 162 of the General Office Building. Every working day, the "Dial 7" announcer records news on the remote control recorder-an- nouncer during morning hours. The operations of the VMC rec- order announcer in the Tele- phone Exchange is controlled from G.O.B. Room 162.
