New Clay Treating Plant Goes On Stream

Will Hike Quality of Lago's Jet Fuel
A facility for increasing the quality of Lago's production of kero-
type jet fuel through a process of rock salt drying and clay treating
has been erected east of the north acid treating plant where No. 1 and
2 crude still were formerly.
The unit, which went on stream in mid-January, is composed of four


10x30 feet vessels installed vertically
and a 5x10 feet steam-out drum. Th2
unit has a capacity of 30,000 B/SD.
Necessity for the facility grew out
of a need to improve the present
kero-type jet fuel to meet a specifi-
cation of 90 minimum WSIM.
(WSIM, which stands for Water Se-
parometer Index Modified, is a mea-
sure of the chemical cleanliness of
the fuel. A fuel with too low an
WSIM, that is a "dirty fuel." can

operations have been installed at
Amuay, Baton Rouge, Bayway and
other refineries to comply with thil
specification requirement.
The low WISM in acid treated
kero such as produced at Lago --
results from sulfonates formed in the
acid treating step. These sulfonates
remain in the oil as entrained com-
pounds. The compounds, called "sur-
factants," can not be filtered out and
when they appear in excess can in-
activate the filter systems on jets,
making the engines accessible to dirt
and clogging ne cause of flame-
outs. Through the use of clay treat-
ing, WISM rating on our kero fuel
now registers close to 100.
In practice, the rock salt vessel
first dries the kerosene and then in
the second vessel the kerosene is pas-
sed through beds of Attapulgas clay
which, because of its adsorbent qua-
lities, removes these surfactant com-
pounds.

First Aid in Mouth Poisoning Cases
(Sixth of a Series)
Hurry is the word to associate with poisoning by mouth. In most
emergencies of this kind, the objective is to dilute the poison by ad-
ministering fluids, and in most cases to make the patient vomit, ex-
cept when strong acid, ammonia or kerosene has been ingestested.
There is always a possibility that fluids or gases may be sucked into
the lungs when a person is evomit-


ing. If this happens immediate med-
ical care is vital.
Caustic poisons such as lye and
strong acids injure the lining of the
food passages; the injurious action
diminishes when fluids dilute the
poison. Obviously, the first aid
should be almost instantaneous.
Every second of delay causes added
injury. Other poisons do not injure
the lining, but there is danger that
the substance will be absorbed into
the system through the digestive
tract and cause harm. If the poison
can be removed from the stomach by
vomiting, the harm will be averted.
Once the substance passes well into

Rathbone Named Director

Of Deafness Research
M. J. Rathbone, board chairman
and chief executive officer of the
Jersey company, has been named a
director of the Deafness Research
Foundation. The Foundation spon-
sors a broad program of ear research
in university laboratories through-
out the country. It also helps pro-
vide medical scientists with inner
ear structures for hearing impair-
ment studies through the Temporal
Bone Banks Program for Ear Re-
search sponsored in cooperation with
the American Academy of Ophthal-
mology and Otolaryngology.
Mr. Rathbone was the first reci-
pient, in 1962, of the Deafness Re-
search Foundation Humanitarian
Award.

Records In December
Esso Standard Libya Inc has set
new records December, 1964, in four
main phases of its operations -
production, daily exports, total vo-
lume of exports and number of ships
loaded.
Crude production averaged 554,800
barrels a day. Exports reached a re-
cord average of more than 600.000
barrels a day; total volume of ex-
ports for the month amounted to
18,569,000 barrels. Fifty-one tankers
destined for 12 countries were load-
ed at the port ddring December.
