Honored at Thirty-Year Celebration
Career highlights of three thirty-year employees from the Process
Department were reviewed at a special meeting held at the General

Ends for Miss J. Crombie;

Two Process Men Retire
After working seventeen years.
Jessie M. S. Crombie, an executive
secretary in Comptroller's, left Lago
Oct. 14 for vacation to be followed
by subsequent retirement. Two other
employees will retire Nov. 1 They
are Hercules F. Sint Jago, and Boni-
facto Stamper, both of Process-Oil
Movements Division.


Oil Movements Undertakes Special

Harbor Safety Awareness Campaign
A special campaign promoting general safety awareness and res-
ponsibility that particularly emphasizes harbor safety was launched
recently in the Oil Movements Division. Bill Englebrecht and Ken Cut-
ting are coordinating the new division's planning for increased safety.
Under the new re-organization an added responsibility for safety
consciousness falls to workers in the
dock area and the campaign will
utilize various methods to carry that
point home, such as meetings, pos-
ters, translating harbor safety re-
gulations into Paplamento and
others.
In announcing the campaign, Har-
boir Expediter Cutting emphasized
that the greatest offenders of Lago's
harbor safety regulations "are not

ed on Esso Transportation Com-
pany's lake tankers for a couple of
years before he transferred to the
Dining Hall as a first class waiter

transferred to Process-LOF as proc-
ess helper D. Subsequent promotions
made him process helper C, B, A and
levelman. He attained his current job
of assistant operator in 1948. Mr
Sint Jago's service comes to over
twenty-nine years.
Mr. Stamper's entire thirty-one
year service was spent in Process-
Receiving and Shipping. Specifically,

noted, we will insist that it be cor-
rected immediately. If this is not
done, we will even stop the ship's
loading until it is done. At the same
time, we will continue to record the
names of ships who are continuous
safety offenders and these will be
watched especially close.
"Over the years we have been re-
latively very fortunate in our har-
bor operations because of our safety
observance and we will continue to
demand strict observance from all
ships that dock here," he said.
An average of better than 170
ships call at San Nicolas Harbor
each month.

United Nations Birthday

With Mock UN Gathering
To commemorate the nineteenth
anniversary of the United Nations,
the Toastmasters Club of Aruba will
hold a youth session typical of a
meeting of the world peace organi-
zation at the Sociedad Bolivariana
tomorrow night at 7:30. Objective of
the gathering is to help make the
community more aware of the task
the UN has shouldered.
Top grades of most Aruban
schools are participating in this ses-
sion. Groups consist of one speaker
and two advisors. A successful test
session was held Oct. 3. Official
language for this gathering is Dutch,
but a team of interpreters will
translate Spanish, English and Pa-
piamento.

Care Of Loved Ones
During the latter part of August and throughout September. Lago
expended hundreds of manhours for the training of an inter-lepart-
mental cross section of fifty men in the techniques and methods of
first aid. This practice, mirrored internationally by other industrial
concerns, has developed the noteworthy statistic that most employees,
certainly Lago employees, are safer on the job than they are in their
own homes.
Part of the reason for this, of course, is that persons will take
chances in their homes that they would not think of taking on the
job. On the job, if a task requires reaching a high place, then a sturdy
ladder is surely provided. At home, rather than remove the ladder
from the garage to put up a new light bulb, the person will attempt
to let a kitchen chair serve the purpose. Many times there are no
consequences, but enough times there are so that the accident statis-
tics in the home are much greater than those on the job.
One of the more shocking statistics released recently shows that
family members accident statistics have increased markedly over the
1963 figures. Last year there were 243 mishaps involving family
members. This year, with almost a full quarter remaining in the year,
already family members have been involved in 243 accidents. The
major part, of course, happening in the home.

Turning Around A Giant -
Turning around PCAR, the biggest single maintenance
operation at Lago, officially got underway Sunday, Oct. 4,.
though months of planning and preparations proceeded it. /
More than 650 men are currently working around the
clock on what is called the CCNP project which, along
with the turnaround on PCAR, includes the incorporation
of LEAR-1 and LEAR-2 with PCAR into one single com-
plex. Upon completion, presently estimated for mid-Nov-
ember, LEAR-1 will manufacture feed for PCAR and
LEAR-2 will further process the PCAR product.
Lago employees are handling the maintenance work on
PCAR while employees of Arthur G. McKee are respon-
sible for the new installations. The last turnaround on
PCAR was completed in March, 1961. -

Lago's First Aid Course Increases

Island's Trained Personnel by Fifty
Fifty employees representing an inter-departmental cross section
completed the American Red Cross "instructor-squad leader" first aid
course last month.
These employees will have more opportunities to use their newly
acquired skills for the community's welfare than on the job.. For, as
the statistics bear out, most accidents occur off the job. Samuel J.
Speziale, the instructor, pointed out that as a result not only employ-
ees but also family members and friends will benefit from the first
aid training.
The thirty-hour course was taught in two-and-one-half hour ses-
sions in the mornings and afternoons at the Plant Protection Division
headquarters. Films were used to supplement the program.
In the course the trainees were taught how to give better and safer
help to accident victims until a doctor arrives. This help, they learned.
could mean the difference between life and death.
The trainees also learned that first aid begins with the steadying
effect upon the stricken person when he realizes that competent hands
will help him. First aid, therefore, they found out, is more than a
dressing or a splint. It relates to the victim's mind and spirit as well
as to his injuries. Its contribution includes the well-selected words of
encouragement and the expression of willingness to help. To learn
more about tending injuries, the trainees practiced the different band-
aging techniques on each other.
The course also covered first aid treatment for shocks and burns.
artificial respiration, rescue breathing, stopping of bleeding, splinting,
and methods for transporting the different accident victims.

New Graduate Engineer

Hilton B. Hassel Joins

Mechanical Department
Lago's engineering staff increased
by one when Hilton B. Hassell join-
ed the Engineering Division of the
Mechanical Department on Oct. 5.
Mr. Hassell, a mechanical engineer,
graduated from the HTS in Leeuw-
arden last August.
He obtained much of his early
education in Curaqao. Coming from
Saba, Mr. Hassell enrolled in Saint
Joseph Trade School in Curagao
After obtaining his diploma of auto
mechanic in 1955, he entered the
service of Shell Curagao, N.V. His
first two years with Shell were spent
in vocational training. The following
two years he worked in the operat-
ing department.
In 1950, he war awarded a gov-
ernment scholarship to further his
studies in Holland. For the next four
years Mr. Hassell remained on a


government scholarship. His last
year of study, however, was spons-
ored by the European Common
Market Community.
Nine months of his practical year,
Mr. Hassell worked for the Shell
Refinery in Curacao. He also spent
three months of
that year with
Hoogovens in Hol-
land.
As part of the
educational pro-
gram put up by
the school, Mr.
Hassell visited (

Saint Francis Scouts 25 Years Young
The Saint Francis Troop, the Roman Catholic Boy Scout
organization in Oranjestad, commemorated its twenty-fifth
anniversary Oct. 4.
Festivities began Oct. 4 with a solemn Holy Mass in the
Saint Francis Church, followed by a special festive meeting at
the group center. Several other scout troops joined the Saint
Francis Troop in the celebration.
Later that day other girl and boy scout troops with drum-
bands joined the celebrating troop in a parade through the
streets of Oranjestad.
Celebrations, which continued that evening in the Saint Fran-
cis Clubhouse, culminated in a variety show.
Leader of the Saint Francis Troop is J. F. van Steen.

AMG Promotes Good Citizenship Among Girls
A fairly new organization in the field
of youth work in Aruba is the Antilli-
aanse Meisjes Gilde -- AMG (Antillean
Girls' Guild i.
This movement, affiliated with the
Catholic Girls' Guild in Holland, is also
active in Curacao, Bonaire and Saba. In
Aruba its total membership is about 500
children and seventy leaders. It has been
active here for almost four ears
The AMG movement is identical with
that of the Girl Scouts in principle, dif-
fering only in details of training The
object of the AMG is to promote among
girls the elements of good citizenship
and the sense of service to others.
The movement is subdivided into three
sections, to meet the needs of the child-
ren at the various stages of develop-
ment: Blenchis, eight to eleven years of
age; Guild, from twelve to fifteen years :
of age; and Hobby, over sixteen years. -- ,-


The central Board of the AMG in
Aruba is composed as follows: Joan
Peterson, district leader; Tecla Tromp,
assistant district leader (Hobby):; Chris-

S A request last March by Utilities' C. R. Osborn for a flame safe-
guard on powerhouse boilers during "start up" has resulted in an
ingenious portable instrument that further increases the operational
safety of the boilers while freeing the operator for other duties around

struction and operational success

anical-Instrument. G. Jansen was
planner on the job.
Following the request by Mr. Os-
born, the Technical Department pro-
vided a basic drawing of a principle
which could be utilized in the flame
detector and ordered some basic
parts such as a solenoid valve, a
relay and the flame detector unit,
all at a cost less than five hundred
dollars.
But putting these pieces together
so they served Lago's purpose, draw-
ing the necessary circuits, finding a
frame work in general, making it
work was another matter.
At this point, Mr. Beaujon, Mr.
Amaya and Mr. Gumbs were called
in and thirty-two manhours were al-
lotted for the task.
Inside the relay, the terminals
were marked, but the arrangements
of the circuits was left to Mr.
Amaya's technical ingenuity. At the
same time it was thought that a
junction box would be necessary.
Mr. Amaya felt that this would not
only be cumbersome, but that with
a junction box there would be a
need for several plugs and other
hook ups that increase resistance
and thus the possibilities of sparks
Instead, he came up with the idea
of using a "T" conduit with all the
wiring connected inside. Th" three
