Relaxation Marks First Free Saturday

Under New Forty-Hour Work Schedule
Relaxation was the keynote to the first Saturday off for Lago employees
under the new folty-hour week schedule. Whether the usual Sunday chores

Lago's Medical Department, on a
paper dealing with "Cytology in In-
dustrial Medicine." The paper was
published in May by the Journal of
Occupational Medicine. In his more
than twelve-year employ Dr. Waas-
dorp has had no break in service.
Mr. Perotte, a twenty-six-year
Lago veteran, was employed as a
laborer D in May, 1938. He progres-
sed through the different tester
ranks and in 1944 achieved the po-
sition of junior chemist. A further
series of promotions made him as-
sistant shift leader, group head C,
group head and his latest boost to
assistant supervising chemist. Mr
Perotte's entire service has been in
work connected directly with the
laboratories.

Free time is no problem for G. J.
Tjon-A-Tsien of Community Serv-
ices, who loves to fish. "I usually
spend my Sundays fishing and now
I'll fish on both days." Artually,
Mr. Tjon-A-Tsien was slightly dis-
appointed on his Saturday off. "I
went fishing, but only stayed about
an hour because of rough seas. I
went home and cleaned up my yard.
It hasn't looked that good in a long
time." He added that he also found


time to type some letters.
While many persons were relax-
ing a bit Satuiday morning, Mrs
Maria Robles de Medina of the sec-
retarial pool spent her entire Satur-
day washing clothes, cooking, bak-
ing and cleaning up the house She
added that "ordinarily, my sister
does much of that work for me on
Saturday, but she and my son were
in Curaqao and I did the work my-
self One luxury she permitted her-
self, however, was to sleep an hour
later and "I plan to do that every
Saturday. I must say, though, that
my Sunday was more relaxing than
usual because that's when I do a lot
of my work around the house. Sun-
day I relaxed and read most of the
day."

ministration, knowing that Saturday
would not be a work day, stayed up
later on Friday night and conse-
quently slept later on Saturday
morning. After breakfast, he took
his family to the beach. "Normally,
we go swimming on Sunday, but we
thought it would be less crowded
and more enjoyable on Saturday and

prevented him from carrying out the
plans he had for his first Saturday
off. Because of the sore throat, he
thought it would be best for him to
take it easy until he could go to the
clinic on Monday. He was happy
though, that he was able to spend
the long weekend with his wife and
six children. He plans to do some
work around the house on future
Saturday.

employee carted his equipment to
the Tele-Aruba studio and. in a pro-
gram sponsored by Volks Universi-
telt, told the story of crude distil-
lation
Mr Geerman began with an ex-
planation of the formation of oil as
a result of great changes in tempe-
ratiues and pressures on the earth
and sea ages ago He then told how
some of the wells formed as much
as four miles under the earth's crust
or the approximate distance from
the Tele-Aruba studios to Dakota
Then, using the equipment, he ex-
plained that by heating to increas-
ingly higher temperatures the differ-
ent products are vaporized and then
ronlensed into liquid form. He fur-
ther demonstrated some of the qua-
lities of such products as gasoline,
and kerosene. Mr. Geerman dealt
primarily with the initial distillation
process, but mentioned in passing
that further processing was neces-
sary to arrive at the different types

their perfect performance in Lago's
off-the-job safety contest according
to August statistics.
Of the remaining twenty-three
entrants, nine are currently showing
a better frequency rate than that
with which they completed last
year's contest
At this point, the rate for the
entire company also shows an im-
provement from 28.04 last year to
27.19 to date.
During August the twenty-four
competing groups suffered sixteen
off-the-job injuries bringing the to-
tal for the year up to 208. In July
the same groups experienced twenty-
nine injuries. Last year a total of
350 off-the-job injuries were record-
ed.
One non-contest but nevertheless
shocking statistic shows that in 1963
there were 245 accidents involving
family members. This year in Au-
gust there had already been 243 re-
corded with more than a full quar-
ter remaining in the year.

employee since 1937, Mr. Geerman
not only had the chemistry know
how for such a demonstration, but
had a sincere interest in children as
evidenced by his various off-the-job
activities
He is president of the Center Ju-
venal Commandeursbaai, a group
that serves some 120 youths; presi-
dent of the Vivons en Chantant
choir, which is comprised of teen-
agers from sixteen years and up,
and has been a scoutmaster. Mr.
Geerman is married and is the father
of three gills. He is also a speaker
in Lago's off-the-job safety pro-
gram.
