Effective Oct. 1, Lago will adopt
a forty-hour work week. The short-
ened work week for all employees
was one of the changes in the Col-
lective Working Agreement agreed
upon during recent Lago-IOWUA
negotiations.
For straight day workers, this
marks the second change in hours in
the last twenty years. Day workers
during the Thirties worked a forty-
eight-hour week. Then during the
early Forties the work week was
shortened to 45-hours, the present
work schedule.
Shift workers now have had four
time changes. From the start of the
refinery operation until about 1937,

for another three-week stint. In 1937,
the work week for shift workers was
reduced to 50.4 hours. Changes which
benefited employees followed and
the shift worker work week was re-
duced to 48.0 and then 44.8. The
last is the present schedule which
will be replaced by an average 39.53-
hour week Thursday, Oct. 1. The
new shift schedule appears on page 2.
A sampling of employees indicates
that most do not really know what
they will do on their first Saturday
off. Some plan to go fishing, some
shopping, while others seem content
to loll around the house possibly
tending repairs that have been put

Otilio L. Jacobs, Former Engineering

Assistant, Re-Employed as Engineer
Otilio L. Jacobs, who left Lago four years ago as an engineering
assistant, rejoined the company last month as a chemical engineer in
Technical Department-Process Engineering Division. During his four-
year absence he obtained his bachelor of science degree in chemical
engineering from Oklahoma State University at Stillwater, Oklahoma.
Mr. Jacobs was originally employ-
ed in 1957 as an engineering trainee
in Technical-Economics and Pro-
gramming after graduating from
HBS-B in Holland He rose to junior
engineering assistant A in 1959 The
following year he decided that he
wanted to become an engineer him-
self. ,

Working with Mr. Jacobs in the
Technical Department at that time
were N. J. Driebeek and T. F May-
field, engineering graduates from
Oklahoma State University These
gentlemen acquainted Mr. Jacobs
with their alma mater and further
intensified his interest in chemistry,
which dated back to his schooldays
First hand experience with the in-
dustrial application of chemistry at
Lago also fanned his interest in the
direction of chemical engineering.
In 1961, Mr. Jacobs enrolled in the
chemical engineering course at Ok-
lahoma State University with Lago
Scholarship Foundation assistance.
He received full scholarships from
the Foundation for the remaining
years.
While at the university, Mr. Ja-
cobs was honored with membership
in the Sigma Tau, an honorary fra-
ternity for engineering students who
have maintained an above average
scholastic record in their junior and
senior years. He was also a member
of the Phi Eta Sigma, another hon-
orary fraternity for freshmen who
attain a 3.5 point average during
the first semester.
His extra-curricular activities in-
cluded memberships in the Pan-
American Club and the International
Club. The Pan-American Club is a
social club which has as its goal the
promotion of relationships between
Latin American and U.S. students.
He was vice-president of this club
for a year. The International Club is
a social club for all foreign students.
Mr. Jacobs spent two of his sum-
mer vacations working for Lago.
During one summer he worked for
a heating and air-conditioning con-
tractor. This last summer, however.
he attended summer school to get
the necessary credits for graduation.
Of his almost four-year stay in
the U.S., Mr. Jacobs said that he
had very few adjustment problems.
To this end he said his three-year
stay in Holland had helped him con-
siderably. "I am very glad to have
had the opportunity to live in a cul-
ture other than that which we have

Peter A. Hassell was selected as the official-of-the-year at the Lago
Sport Park Board party held at the Aruba Caribbean Hotel Sept. 5.
The party, which was attended by 121 guests, is sponsored by the
LSP Board in appreciation for the help received during the year from
the officials.
Mateo Reyes, chairman of the LSP
Board, pointed out that it is impos-
sible for the board to run the Lago
Sport Park efficiently without the
help of the officials who dedicate
their spare time to the furtherance
of sports on Aruba.
Mr. Hassell, a baseball and soft-
ball umpire, was given special re-
cognition at the party when he was
named official-of-the-year. "Mr. Has-
sell has umpired many baseball
games this year," Mr. Reyes said.
"He is always willing to help at the
Lago Sport Park."

who received a transistor radio each.

Increase in Salt Intake

Is Recommended Way

To Avoid Heat Fatigue
If the heat sometimes holds a Lago
employee or his family member back
from really enjoying the ext a ac-!
tivities associated with stunier, a
few glamns of salt may make the
difference between fun and fatigue
Comfortable clothing, cooling de-

vices and taking it easy ale not
enough to beat the heat if excessive
perspiration has robbed the body of
its necessary salt supply
In weather such as we have in
Aruba, adults and children alike
may suffer the symptoms of salt
loss especially when engaging in out-
door activities such as sports and
gardening.
The Lalt loss symptoms begin with
weariness and loss of will to work
Progressive salt depletion may ic-

stilt in heat (c amps.
A person does not need to woilk
in a large refinery, play baseball or
garden for a whole day to need
more salt Any excess in high tem-
perature may cause perspiration to
lower salt contents and start the
salt loss symptoms. The salt loss
must be replaced day to day.

Tanki Leendert Youth Tour Refinery
The 900 Aruban students who visited Lago during the summer
vacation is indicative of the strong interest these young men and
women have in the industrial operations on their island. The students
toured the refinery in class or club groupings.
One such group that visited Lago last month was the Tanki Leen-
dert Youth Club. This club had organized an excursion for its senior
members and included a Lago tour in the outing. It was the last Lago
tour for three members prior to their departure abroad to further
their studies.

"Club Juvenil" Ta Bishita Refineria
tin den e operacionnan industrial ariba nan isla. E estudiantenan a

cion den construction di tankero: Nan ta birando grand dia pa dia. E
aumento den grandura di tankero ta refleha e conceptonan cu ta cam-

exportA. Lago no tin truck, trein of
tuberia pa carga azeta. El ta de-
pende ariba e tankeronan y lama.
E cambio den disenjo di tankero-
nan y nan grandura ta bira evidence
den trafico den Haaf di San Nicolas.
E dimensionnan general di algun a
bira evidence. E Lake Tanker ante-
rior tabata chikito en comparacion
cu e T-2 tankeronan bieuw, e carga-
dornan durante guerra di mas o me-
nos 100,000 baril. Den anjanan cu a
pasa liher, e tankeronan T-2 pronto
a bira chikito y fuera di uso. E su-
per tankeronan, segun e number, des-
pues a bini na existencia. Pronto e
tankeronan a haya un tonelada cu
ta surpass 26,000 ton.
E grandura di tankeronan no a
crece cada bez un dulm, pero nan
dimension a explota. Nan a bula di
35,000 ton pa 47,000 ton, 77,000 ton,
5,000 ton, pa 90,000 ton y hopi tone-
lada entire esakinan. Actualmente,
Standard Oil Company (New Jersey)
tin bapornan di 92,000 ton bao con-
struccion.
Pa tene paso cu demands di
transportation di petroleo y e aumen-

to den grandura di tankeronan nobo
construi, hopi di e bapornan mas
chikito ta ser haci mas grand. Hen-
denan di marina ta yama e process
aki "jumboizing". Pa esnan cu no ta
largo. E portret di Esso Switzerland,
un bishitante frecuente na San Nico-
las, tabata e promer tanker di
35,000 ton cu a ser haci mas grand
pa 49,000 ton. E otro bapornan cu a
ser haci mas largo y grand despues
di Esso Zwitzerland tabata e tan-
keronan Esso Trinidad, Panama, Ar-
gentina, Chile, Crstobal, Jamaica,
Balboa, Peru, Puerto Rico y Colom-
bia. Nan tur a ser haci mas grand
for di 35,000 tonelada pa 49,000 ton.

Bapornan
Aunque e bapornan aki tabata den
servicio pa solamente tres of cuatro
anja, economic realistic di transpor-
tacion marina a dicta e deseabilidad
pa aumenta nan capacidad di carga.
E cuatro bapornan hermana di
Esso cu ta nabega entire Lago y La-
go Maracaibo, Esso Amuay, Caracas,
Caripito y Maracaibo tambe ta
someti na e program di engrande-
cemento. Nan tur, cu segun nan di-
senjo original tin capacidad di 36,000
ton, lo ser had mas grand. -En rea-
lidad, Esso Caracas ya ta mas largo
cu el tabata un tempo. Awor e tin
un capacidad di 39,000 tonelada. Esso
Maracaibo pronto lo ser manda Ale-
mania pa worde haci mas largo. Es-
so Amuay y Caripito ta ariba lista
pa bira mas grand den future.
E trabao anrba Esso Zwitzerland a

ser haci na Japon door di Astillerc
Kobe y fabric di motor di Industria
Pisa Mitsubishi. A tuma cuatro lu-
patras ta wolde saka flotando for
di abao di e dek mas ariba cu a ser
corta y ta keda want ariba dry-
dock. Na e seccionnan di padilanti y
patras un pida di nuebe pia horizon-
tal ta ser install. E dek original ta
ser baha ariba e pidanan horizontal
nobo instalA. E patti padilanti y pa-
tras di e bapor ta ser poni hunto y
conectA door di un seccion met-mer
di ochenta pia cu a set fabric ariba
tera pa pas cu e hundura mas giandi
di e tankero. E proyecto aki a haci
e largura di Esso Switzerland for di
690 pia pa 770 pia y a aumenta su
hundura y haltura di cuarenta y
siete pia pa cincuenta y seis pia.

Enginieronan Ta Reclama
Enginieronan cu a desaroya e pro-
ceso ta reclama cu e hacimento lar-
go ta ser logra "cu un menos canti-
dad di perdida di e estructura pre-
sente y un minimo disruptura dr aco-
modacionnan y facilidadnan exis-
tente." Trecemento di un bon alinea-
cion, manera por ser suponi, ta e
preocupacion mas grand
Tankeronan mas grand ta corta e
costo di transportation di azeta di
Jersey. E grandura piomedio di e
121 tankeronan cu Jeisey ta posede
awor ta 35,000 tonelada
Grandura no ta e unico consideia-
clon. Humble Oil & Refining Com-
"lo transport azeta for di Golfo di
Mexico pa Estados Unidos su Costa
Oriente na un costo mas abao cul
cualkier otro medio atlba tera of
lama E tankero tin 66,700 tonelada
cu un espacio cubico pa 562,500 ba-
irl di carga, yenA den solamente diez-
Snuebe tanki. Esaki ta result den
menos particion, menos linja di tubo,
menos valve y cargamento y des-
carga mas facil.
