Effective Oct. 1, Lago will adopt
a forty-hour work week. The short-
ened work week for all employees
was one of the changes in the Col-
lective Working Agreement agreed
upon during recent Lago-IOWUA
negotiations.
For straight day workers, this
marks the second change in hours in
the last twenty years. Day workers
during the Thirties worked a forty-
eight-hour week. Then during the
early Forties the work week was
shortened to 45-hours, the present
work schedule.
Shift workers now have had four
time changes. From the start of the
refinery operation until about 1937,


for another three-week stint. In 1937,
the work week for shift workers was
reduced to 50.4 hours. Changes which
benefited employees followed and
the shift worker work week was re-
duced to 48.0 and then 44.8. The
last is the present schedule which
will be replaced by an average 39.53-
hour week Thursday, Oct. 1. The
new shift schedule appears on page 2.
A sampling of employees indicates
that most do not really know what
they will do on their first Saturday
off. Some plan to go fishing, some
shopping, while others seem content
to loll around the house possibly
tending repairs that have been put

At Warehouse A Oct. 10
Two hundred Lago employees will
have the opportunity to purchase
used company furniture Saturday,
Oct. 10. Those selected will be the
next 200 in the order of the original
furniture drawing which was held
last November.
In the original drawing, 1935
names were drawn in order. In the
four previous sales, held Nov. 30, Dec.
14, Dec. 21 and Jan. 11, 665 Lago
employees were given the opportu-
nity to use their furniture purchase
option. Of the 1270 names still pend-
ing, the next 200 will take part in
next month's sale.
Employees in the next 200 group
will be notified at their work loca-
tion the week of Sept. 28. The no-
tices will be mailed, and will design-
ate the time between 7 a.m. and 4
p.m that the holder of the option
can enter the sales area.
Previous sales were held in the
Guest Quarters 8 courtyard. GQ 8
no longer exists, so the sales area
has been moved to Warehouse A, the
enclosed area north of the Seroe
Colorado supermarket Option holders
are requested to enter the compound
through the east entrance and de-

Clinic Hours Announced
For Forty-Hour Week
General clinic hours at Lago
Hospital have been announced
for the new forty-hour work
week that goes into effect next
week.
The clinic will be open for em-
ployees from 7 a.m. to noon and
from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Monday
through Friday. Family members
can call at the clinic between 8
a.m. and 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m
and 3 p.m. Monday through Fri-
day.
Saturday, Sunday and holidays,
the schedule for employees and
family members will be 9:30 a m.
to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sunday
and holiday "out of hours" clinics
are for acute and serious cases
only.

Otilio L. Jacobs, Former Engineering

Assistant, Re-Employed as Engineer
Otilio L. Jacobs, who left Lago four years ago as an engineering
assistant, rejoined the company last month as a chemical engineer in
Technical Department-Process Engineering Division. During his four-
year absence he obtained his bachelor of science degree in chemical
engineering from Oklahoma State University at Stillwater, Oklahoma.
Mr. Jacobs was originally employ-
ed in 1957 as an engineering trainee
in Technical-Economics and Pro-
gramming after graduating from
HBS-B in Holland He rose to junior
engineering assistant A in 1959 The
following year he decided that he
wanted to become an engineer him-
self. ,


Working with Mr. Jacobs in the
Technical Department at that time
were N. J. Driebeek and T. F May-
field, engineering graduates from
Oklahoma State University These
gentlemen acquainted Mr. Jacobs
with their alma mater and further
intensified his interest in chemistry,
which dated back to his schooldays
First hand experience with the in-
dustrial application of chemistry at
Lago also fanned his interest in the
direction of chemical engineering.
In 1961, Mr. Jacobs enrolled in the
chemical engineering course at Ok-
lahoma State University with Lago
Scholarship Foundation assistance.
He received full scholarships from
the Foundation for the remaining
years.
While at the university, Mr. Ja-
cobs was honored with membership
in the Sigma Tau, an honorary fra-
ternity for engineering students who
have maintained an above average
scholastic record in their junior and
senior years. He was also a member
of the Phi Eta Sigma, another hon-
orary fraternity for freshmen who
attain a 3.5 point average during
the first semester.
His extra-curricular activities in-
cluded memberships in the Pan-
American Club and the International
Club. The Pan-American Club is a
social club which has as its goal the
promotion of relationships between
Latin American and U.S. students.
He was vice-president of this club
for a year. The International Club is
a social club for all foreign students.
Mr. Jacobs spent two of his sum-
mer vacations working for Lago.
During one summer he worked for
a heating and air-conditioning con-
tractor. This last summer, however.
he attended summer school to get
the necessary credits for graduation.
Of his almost four-year stay in
the U.S., Mr. Jacobs said that he
had very few adjustment problems.
To this end he said his three-year
stay in Holland had helped him con-
siderably. "I am very glad to have
had the opportunity to live in a cul-
ture other than that which we have

ed this week by L. D Dittle, train-
Ing advisor. Applications will be
available Oct. 1 in Mr. Dittle's of-
fice, room 259, in the Administration
Building, and must be returned to
him before the December deadline.
For the second year, nursing
scholarships will be offered to qual-
ified employees of affiliates and their
children. The nursing scholarships
are available at any United States
school of nursing approved by a

John H. Brown III, Lago marine
manager since 1958, has accepted
the position of marine superinten-
dent, Esso Standard, Libya. Mr.
Brown will leave Lago about the
middle of next month for his new
post in Marsa El Brega, Libya.
Mr. Brown came to Lago in 1955
as division head, Agency Operations,
in the Marine Department. In 1957
he was made assistant marine man-
ager and the following year in Sep-
tember he was appointed marine
manager.
His original company employ
started in Januaiy, 1947, as one of
Jersey Standard's sea-going person-
nel. He came ashore in 1950 with
the former Esso Shipping Company
as a cost analyst II.

P. A. Hassell Named Official-of-the-Year

At Annual Sport Park Board Barbecue
Peter A. Hassell was selected as the official-of-the-year at the Lago
Sport Park Board party held at the Aruba Caribbean Hotel Sept. 5.
The party, which was attended by 121 guests, is sponsored by the
LSP Board in appreciation for the help received during the year from
the officials.
Mateo Reyes, chairman of the LSP
Board, pointed out that it is impos-
sible for the board to run the Lago
Sport Park efficiently without the
help of the officials who dedicate
their spare time to the furtherance
of sports on Aruba.
Mr. Hassell, a baseball and soft-
ball umpire, was given special re-
cognition at the party when he was
named official-of-the-year. "Mr. Has-
sell has umpired many baseball
games this year," Mr. Reyes said.
"He is always willing to help at the
Lago Sport Park."
Winners in the door prize raffle
were G. Richardson and J. Alexis,
who received a transistor radio each.

Elected to Jersey Board
J K. Jamieson has been elected to
the Board of Directors of Standard
Oil Company (New Jersey). To ac-
cept the post, Mr. Jamieson has re-
signed as president of Humble Oil &
Refining Company, Jersey Stand-
ard's major affiliate in the United
States. Elected to succeed Mr. Ja-
mieson as president was Charles F.
Jones, an executive vice president
of Humble.
Mr. Jamieson, now a United States
citizen, was born in Medicine Hat,
Alberta, Canada. He attended the
University of Alberta, and was gra-
duated from the Massachusetts In-
stitute of Technology with a bach-
elor of science degree in civil engin-
eering and business administration.
Mr. Jamieson, who was also elect-
ed a Jersey Standard executive vice
president and a member of the exe-
cutive committee, joined Imperial
Oil Limited, Jersey's Canadian af-
filiate, in 1948 as associate manager
of the Coordination and Economics
Department. The following year he
was made head of the Engineering
and Development Division at Sarnia,
and in 1950 he was appointed assis-
tant general manager of the Manu-
facturing Department.
He was elected a director of Im-
perial Oil in 1952 and, one year
later, a vice president. In 1959, he
was elected president and director of
International Petroleum Company.
Mr. Jamieson served with Interna-
tional until June, 1961, when he was
elected a vice president and member
of the board of Humble. He was
elected president of Humble in 1963.

Tanki Leendert Youth Tour Refinery
The 900 Aruban students who visited Lago during the summer
vacation is indicative of the strong interest these young men and
women have in the industrial operations on their island. The students
toured the refinery in class or club groupings.
One such group that visited Lago last month was the Tanki Leen-
dert Youth Club. This club had organized an excursion for its senior
members and included a Lago tour in the outing. It was the last Lago
tour for three members prior to their departure abroad to further
their studies.
