Lago, I.O.W.U.A. Officially Sign New CWA
The three-year Collective Working Agreement between the
Independent Oil Workers Union of Aruba and Lago was signed
Thursday afternoon, August 6 It will run through June 30, 1967.
This official document supersedes the letter of argeement signed
by Lago President W. A. Murray and Union President F. L.
Maduro on June 26, in the presence of Federal Mediator Reint
Laan. The letter of agreement which was binding upon both
parties in the interim, covered the major changes negotiated for
the new Collective Working Agreement.
Signing the CWA on behalf of Lago, was Vice-President R. E.
Nystrom. President Murray was off the island. For the Union,
President F. L. Maduro, Secretary L. Albus and Treasurer P. G.
Brook signed the agreement.


Red Cross First Aid Training Program

Scheduled in Immediate Lago Future


Some fifty Lago employees, representing an inter-departmental cross
section, will soon take part in a far-reaching first aid program. Speci-
fically, the men will take the American Red Cross "instructor-squad
leader" course Ultimately, at least ten per cent of all refinery person-

ing the consolidation of the Lago
Fire, Police and Safety functions

would be directed at safe-guarding
refinery personnel and property and
that the consolidation provides the
opportunity for a greater fulfillment
of this purpose.
Mr. O'Brien pointed out that the
first aid training is a "valuable sup-
plement to existing medical facili-
ties filling the need for immediate
and temporary care of a victim until

Effort for Increased Communications
Increased Lago efforts to maintain forthright and meaningful com-
munications took another step forward recently with the announcement
by Lago Vice President R. E. Nystrom that a daily bulletin, "Diario."
would be published and distributed to all refinery personnel.
The single page publication printed in blue and white will include


news items in the following cate-
gories:
(a) Items regarding operations,
maintenance, construction.
(b) Permanent organization
changes.
(c) A listing of visitors to Lago
and Aruba.
Id) Business trips of management
members.
fe) Information about individuals
(citations, etc.).
Sf) Participation of management
members in community acti-


vities and functions.
Information for the "Diario,"
which will be printed in both English
and Papiamento, will be gathered
daily throughout the departments
and will be compiled by the Public
Relations Department. The "Diario"
will be posted at various bulletin
boards and will also be available at
Gates two, three, eight and nine, as
well as at the Administration Build-

Seventy-Five Employees Have Enrolled

In Finance Seminar Beginning Aug. 31
Seventy-five employees have enrolled to date in the Lago sponsored
personal finance seminar. The Training Division has advised that there
is still opportunity to enroll in the four-week course which will start
August 31 and last through September 25. Up to ninety participants

At Lago, the men called upon to
perform this function are Edward
Fowler and Apolonio Werleman.
Through their combined efforts,
Lago is able to function in English,
Papiamento, Spanish, French, Ger-
man, Dutch, Italian and when ne-
cessary. Latin.
According to Mr. Fowler, a trans-
lator must fsst be able to digest
what is being said and then interpret
what ideas are being communicated.
Toward this end, he said "we at-
tempt to be as literal as possible,
but as free as necessary Our goal is
communications." He added that the
necessity to interpret thoughts rather
than words becomes quite evident
when idiomatic expressions enter in-
to communications. Often, literal
translations would be totally mean-
ingless and therefore useless.

Idiomatic Expressions
Regarding idiomatic expressions,
Mr. Fowler related that one reason
why translating Papiamento can be
so difficult is because "it doesn't
have an idiom of its own."
One of the more difficult assign-
ments which the translation group
faces, and one for which Mr Fowler
is continually preparing himself, has
to do with translation of legal re-
ports and legislation Here, the spe-
cific meanings of words becomes of
critical importance.
In this crucial area, however, Mr.
Fowler has an extensive background.
In 1949 he began as a translator in
the lower court in Curaqao and now
translates for the assistant supreme
court justice in Aruba. He provides
the service, with Lago consent, at
no charge
Industry must keep abreast of its
place in the socio-economic structure
not only of the world, but of the
community in which it operates, and
toward this end, the translation de-
partment daily translates newspaper
articles affecting the oil industry or.
specifically, Lago. The pair also
translate newspapers which our
competitors put out, such as Shell's
Nos Isla. Along similar lines, they
do all the Papiamento translations

The field of translation has chang-
ed notably over the years. Histori-
cally, translators were often schol-
ars who worked alone to make the
cultural treasures of different coun-
tries and past generations available
to the public. Now, with the ever-
shrinking quality of the world, trans-
lators are an integral part not only
of business, but of governments and
various organizations, and, accord-
ing to Mr. Fowler, it's no longer pos-
sible to work alone. A translator to
be effective must have a variety of
aids at his disposal. These include
dictionaries of several languages.
legal texts, technical books and glos-
saries, and the publications provided
by different translation organiza-
tions that seek to coordinate the
translating abilities of large num-
bers of persons for mutual benefit
As far as translating being a field
for youngsters to enter, Mr. Fowler
felt that the opportunities were there
for the persons with the keenness of
desire to make the necessary effort.
As an example, he pointed out, a
teaching certificate must he acquired
in a language, then a two-year prac-
tice apprenticeship must be served
under an experienced translator for
further development. Then an eight-
hour examination must be passed,
four written, four oral
