Lago Will Sponsor Musical Television

Show Starting Thursday, June 11
Lago will go on television next week. The company's initial ven-
ture in the medium of television will be in the form of sponsorship
of a one-half hour musical variety show. It is called "Broadway
Goes Latin."
The program will be televised every Thursday evening over Tele-
Aruba at 7:45.
The program features Edmundo Ros and his orchestra. The music
and dancing all have Latin and Caribbean rhythms, and for this
reason it is felt the program will be popular and well suited to the
Aruba viewing audience. Its musical nature makes it excellent enter-
tainment for all ages.
The themes of the shows are taken from outstanding Broadway
musicals. Presented with a Latin tempo, "Broadway Goes Latin"
offers such celebrities as Barbara McNair, Xavier Cugat and Abbe
Lane. the DeCastro Sisters and Tito Puente. My Fair Lady, South
Pacific, Oklahoma, Pajama Game and Porgy and Bess are a few of
the musicals from which selections have been taken.

Insurance Is Given Free
To Group Policy Holders
For Three-Month Period
Nearly 2200 Lago employees who
participate in the group life insur-
ance program will receive three
months' free insurance beginning
this month This is the fifth time
since the inception of the program
in March, 1956, that premiums to
policy holders have been waived
Premiums will be waived for June,
July and August. There will be no
Insurance premium deductions in pay
received in July. August and Sep-
tember.
Fls. 31,072 is available for pre-
mium waivers this year to 2193 par-
ticipants, which is seventy-one per
cent of employees eligible to partici-
pate in the group life insurance pro-
gram. Premiums for each individual
covered by the program amount to
FIs. 6 a year for each Fls 1000 of
insurance.
Since the insurance program began
eight years ago, there have been
fifty-two death claims amounting to
Fls. 386,000 and forty-four disability
claims amounting to Fls. 244,875.
Participants in ,he plan received

starting in March, 1960. Free insur-
ance was also provided in May and
June of 1961. and for five-month

Vacuum Still Stack Raised in Sections

As Part of Lago Modernization Project
A modernization of Lago's Vacuum Still, begun Nov. 18, 1963, is
progressing normally, and another step toward its scheduled comple-
tion in mid-July was taken recently with the raising of an 180-foot
stack. When completed, the unit's former furnace will be replaced by
a higher capacity, cabin-type furnace designed for greater efficiency.

Lago's Glowing 'Beacons of Progress'


Are Subject of System Safety Survey
Esso Research and Engineering's G. J. Bacsik and Lago Technical
Department's K. J. Roberts are currently engaged in the first flare
system survey held here since 1945. The survey began May 19, and is
expected to require about four weeks. On completion, recommendations
will be made for improvements to the present system.
As a result of vast changes in --


equipment since 1945. the flare sys-
tem requirements have shifted. The
survey and ensuing recommendations
will be aimed at locating and elimi-
nating potential hazards that may
have crept into Lago's system in the
course of time. The survey makes
available to Lago, through Mr. Bac-
sik, the results of new developments
and changes in the field of flare
system design.
The actual flare stacks, the struc-
tures located throughout the refinery,
whose flames can be seen great dis-
tances at night, are common to every
refinery in the world so much so,
that the term "beacon of progress"
is often used in retiring to a flare,
since through the years they have
been glowing trademarks of indus-
trial achievement. During World
War II, for example, many of the
world's refineries that came under
enemy attack extended their flare
lines several miles from the refinery
site and placed the fire stack as far
away as possible. The flares were
being used by the enemy as targets
during night bombing runs.
This survey, however, is primarily
concerned with the system of lines
that feed into the stacks and how
these systems operate under a mul-
titude of situations.

Survey Provides Training
The five flares located throughout
the refinery are outlets lor the vast
safety system that provides methods
whereby in the event of a unit emer-
gency, the vessel's contents can be
directed to the flare system and
gases burned in the atmosphere. This
is done by releasing the hydrocar-
bon gases and liquids already in the
units. Gases go to the stack, and Ii-
quid is pumped to a slop sphere for
later re-processing. These flares are
also utilized when starting or shut-
ting down equipment, and to ease
pressure build-ups.
While making available to Lago,
through Mr. Bacsik, the wealth of
Esso Research's knowledge in this
field, as it applies to a modern re-
fining operation, the survey also
provides training for our personnel,

design is a highly complex endeavor,
requiring highly specialized training
and considerable experience In his
eighteen yeats with Esso Research,
Mr. Bacsik has traveled throughout
the Standard Oil Company (New Jer-
sey) affiliates on similar projects,

Much of the survey will only serve
as a verification that part of the
systems in use contlnrie to ade-
quately serve present and expected
future needs. Some parts of the sys-
tem were adequate at the time only.
This analysis points up those por-
tions which were efficiently designed
and which merely evolved to handle
a temporary situation that may no
longer exist.
In designing a flare system, there
are certain basic safety considera-
tions which ate set forth by Esso
Research. These a ? termed "single
risks," and refer to a single emer-
gency, such as fire, loss of power or
loss of water at any unit in the re-
finery. It also takes into account all
the problems that might present
themselves as a result of this single
emergency. These are then added up,
evaluated and provisions made in
the system to handle them effec-
tively.
Normally, each flare stack is uti-
lized by a particular unit or group
of units. However, when a flare is
shut down for inspection or repairs.
the system also provides, through in-
terconnections, the flexibility where-
by other flares are available to serve
that unit or group. The complica-
tions at this point Pre numerous, re-
quiring skilled performance by the
operator.

Flare Assignments
Under normal conditions, the Al-
ky-2 flare selves the Alky plant,
Hydro Plant area and ISAR The
Acid Plant flare serves just the Acid
Plant: the Hydro Plant flare is only
used to burn hydrogen sulfide when
the Acid Plant can not handle it
The Con flare in the lagoon behind
the General Office Building. Lago's
highest capacity flare, serves the
Cracking Plant area, ICAR, and
TAR. The Gas Plant flare, west of
the Cracking Plant, serves PCAR,
GAR-1, IAR and LEAR-1. The Gas
Plant and Alky-2 flares are struc-
turally the refinery giants.
Mechanically, the actual flare
stacks are relatively simple construc-
tions and there is very little differ-
ence, except in size, from one flare
to another. The problems are in the
networks of lines and vessels that
must feed these flares and the con-
ditions under which they are called
upon to function.

light. This pilot light is ignited elec-
trically and as the gas comes off it
burns in the same way as a gas stove
burns.
The line to the stack enters a seal
drum which is halt full of water.

stack through a connection to the
seal drum rather than to the line
from the unit. This is a safety
measure to prevent flames from
backing up through the vapor re-
lease line and getting to the unit
The primary, overall objective of
Lago's flare system and the current
flare survey, is to provide the most
effective safety system possible in a
modern day refinery, affording the
greatest protection to both person-
