*ub VOL. 25, No. 10 Lago Speakers and Film Reach over 8000 People In First Four Months Well over 8000 people of all ages in all sections of Aruba have heard about safety off the job, or home safety, and have seen safety and public relations films presented through Lago's off-the-job safety program and Lago's public relations program In addition, these same people have heard discussions about safety and Lago by members of Lago's speaker's bureau. The 8000 people weie reached dur- ing the first four months of 1964 The programs will continue through- out the year and will continue to furnish the avenue along which Lago and its representatives can re- late important messages and pro- vide a real community service. The programs are brought to specific areas either through the film truck or the use of an organization's hall Public relations film showings have reached over 5000 people. The majority have attended film truck showings at locations such as Seroe Blanco, Pos Chikito, Pavilla, Brazil and Ayo. In January, 1000 listened to off-the-job safety speakers. The other months the speakers drew slightly less. They spoke to a wide variety of organizations including the Piedra Plat youth, Anglican Mothers Union, Oranjestad Credit Union, Juventud Crstian and Tanki Leendert youth. There are five speaking and film engagements scheduled for the re- mainder of May. F. V. Christiaans will address the Noord Credit Union May 26. His topic will be safety of hands and a film will be shown re- lating to the subject. May 27, T. J. Figaroa will speak from the film truck in Paradera. Eleven Employees Honored for Thirty Years of Service Employees Form Largest Group at Special Award Ceremonies for Service Eleven men received thirty-year awards May 13. The honored men represented 330 years of Lago service, and, in addition, they es- tablished a record for the largest number of thirty-year employees pre- sent at a special management-staff award meeting. Ten thirty-year men attended the previous largest meet- ing held March 16, 1960. It was a day of notable happen- ings and recountings. Among the recipients was F. T. Ponson of Mech- anical-Machinist, a member of an Aruban family whose work history closely parallels Lago's history. As noted by Mechanical Manager J. R. Proterra in recounting Mr. Ponson's company career, two of Mr. Ponson's brothers retired last year, each with over thirty years of service. C. B. Ponson of the Process Department retired Dec. 1, 1963, with thirty-one years of service, and C. F. L. Ponson of the Mechanical Department re- tired Sept. 1, 1963, with over thirty- seven years of service. The three brothers represent close to 100 years of company service. Added to this, Mr. Proterra said, is the service of their father, who also worked for Lago for many years. Mr. Proterra was the first of the department managers to relate ex- periences of employees. His discus- sions followed a welcome and intro- duction by Vice President R. E. Ny- strom. Fred J. Legenhausen of Mechani- cal-Field Coordination began his company career in April, 1934, as a carpenter. G. Kossuth, Mechanical-Store- house, division superintendent, has accepted a position with Esso Stan- dard (Switzerland), and will be as- signed as mechanical superintendent of a refinery that will be built at Mittelland, Switzerland, near Zurich. Mr. Kossuth will leave Lago late next month on furlough and will re- port to the Swiss company about Sept. 1. Construction of the approximately 100,000-barrel refinery will begin next year with completion the fol- lowing year. It will operate on Li- byan crude delivered by the South European pipeline. Mr. Kossuth will be actively in- volved in construction work involv- ing mechanical design and the dev- elopment and operation of mechani- cal facilities. Originally employed at Lago in March, 1946, as a piping draftsman, Mr. Kossuth was promoted to su- pervising engineer in March, 1954, and assistant division superintendent in July, 1955. In August, 1961, he was promoted to division superinten- dent of Mechanical-Technical and Administration. In December, 1962, he was transferred to the Process Department as assistant process manager. He became division super- intendent of Light Oils Finishing in June, 1963, and in February, 1964, Mr. Kossuth returned to the Mech- anical Department as division super- intendent of the Storehouse. Printed by the Aruba Drukkerij N.V., Neth. Ant. Unlimited ARUBA ESSO NEWS Opportunities May 23, 1964 lr The May 9 issue of the Aruba Esso News announced the establish- ment of a Lago educational leave of absence policy. The announcement also told of the possibility of youth, who are interested in professional studies applicable to Lago's needs, having their university education financed either through Lago sponsorship or grants from the Lago Scholarship Foundation. What a glorious opportunity this is for intelligent, industrious youth to gain university education! What an outstanding effort this is by Lago to assist youth in attaining education that could be out of reach of the average student because of the high expense involved in university study! But here it is, with no strings attached. Laid out within easy reach, providing the desirous student is academically prepared and recom- mended by his department, is four or five years of university education at Lago's expense. In addition, the employee who is sponsored by Lago will receive a percentage of his Lago salary. Once the student or employee has entered the university, Lago's only criterion for continu- ed sponsorship is that the student maintain academic proficiency. There can be no avoiding the need for skilled, talented people or the need for highly developed young minds. Lago needs these people; the Aruba community needs these people. No community can live and develop without them. Not today, at any rate. Speaking to the student body at Marshall University in West Vir- ginia, M. J. Rathbone, chairman of the Board of Directors of Standard Oil Company (New Jersey), stated that "the most important capital that any economy possesses is in the skills which people carry around in their heads." He went on to say that if "we fail to make adequate investments in what is sometimes called our 'human capital,' then the most brilliant flowering of technology in all history could prove to be, in human terms, a mass catastrophe." Mr. Rathbone spoke of the dynamic changes which are taking place in all economies that impose two educational requirements. He gave the first as the need to upgrade skills and the second as adaptability. Aruba is no different than any other area. The same holds true here. Aruba is advancing as fast technologically as other areas of the world. Aruba's youth must keep pace with the revolutionary changes that engulf society. Many can do this by taking advantage of oppor- tunities as offered by Lago to attend universities. As long as industry and society strive for competitive efficiency, the need for highly skilled professional and technical people will never slacken. Mr. Rathbone said: "Man is the most adaptable of all beings. He is born unspecialized. His brain and his hand can be turned to an infinity of different tasks. But this adaptability soon withers and dies unless it is nourished by education. Education is the foundation on which all specialized skills should rest." No por evita e necesidad pa hende expert y cu talent, of mentenan hoben sumamente desaroya. Lago mester tal hendenan; e comunidad di Aruba mester tal hendenan. Ningun comunidad por biba y desaroya sin nan. En todo caso, no awe mas. Papiando pa e grupo di estudiantenan na Universidad Marshal na West Virginia, M. J. Rathbone, president di Junta di Directornan di Standard Oil Company (New Jersyy), a bisa cu "e capital mas impor- tante cu cualkier economic ta posede ta keda den e abilidadnan cu cual hendenan ta camna rond den nan cabez." Aruba no ta dife- rente cu ningun otro lugar. E mes cos ta berdad aki tambe. Aruba ta avanzando mes liher tecnologicamente cu otro lugarnan f den mundo. Hubentud di Aruba mester tene paso cu e cambionan revo- lucionario cu ta domina sociedad. Hopi por haci esaki door di tuma ventaha di e oportunidadnan manera ofreci door di Lago pa atende universidad. Tantem cu industrial y sociedad ta lucha pa eficiencia competitive, e necesidad pa hendenan professional y tecnico cu gran abilidad nunca lo mengua. Sr. Rathbone a bisa: "Hende ta esun cu por adapta su mes mehor cu tur otro series human. El no a nace un specialist. Su mente y su man- nan por ser usa pa un infinidad di diferente tareanan. E visibilidad di e refleccion di e spiel ta extended pa varies milja y un case a munstra cu un piloto a mira un spiel for di un distancia di new type mirrors, which have an aiming device, are probably the most effective signaling apparatus which can be used without much expense. A member of the Aruba Flying Club, Mr. Murray has flown numer- ous search missions. When he first began flying in the Caribbean in 1957, Mr. Murray became aware that many pilots and seamen were not doing much along the lines of water survival, and were merely go- ing through the motions of comply- ing with the law. Water Survival He became interested in the ques- tion of water survival and upon re- turning to the United States on a leave of absence to continue his edu- cation, he undertook a study of dif- ferent safety methods, equipment and procedures applicable to water survival. The final paper was term- ed "Water, Water Everywhere," which Mr. Murray made available to interested person's or groups. Based on this research, Mr. Mur- ray concluded that the signal mirror is probably the most useful piece of equipment for someone stranded at sea. According to Mr. Murray, United States military records show that the signal mirror proved effective in thousands of wartime ditchings at sea and the mirror can function if the sun is only a few degrees above the horizon. One mirror contact, for example, was made on two P-51's flying at 16,000 feet. Contacts are made easily at 6000 feet and are not uncommon at 10,000 feet. One safety aspect that Mr. Murray emphasizes at this point is that children should not be allowed to play with the mirrors since the reflection is almost blind- ing at short range and could prove disastrous if shone in the face of a driver. Visibility of the mirror's reflec- tion extends several miles and one record shows that a pilot caught sight of a mirror at a distance of twenty miles. Another pilot was di- verted to a rescue from nine miles away at 10,000 feet. In his efforts to promote survival safety, Mr. Murray has been getting assistance from Technical Depart- ment's Muricio Croes, whose father was lost at sea on a fishing trip. binti milja leuw. worde dirigi pa nuebe milja leuw pia.
