It also destroyed furniture and belongings of Mrs. Jack and five children. None was injured, fortunately, the family was out of the house when the fire started. The complete destruction left them with only the clothes they wore. Community organizations wast- ed no time in assisting the troubl- ed family. Leading the movement to aid was the Sociedad Bolivari- ana women's section and its chair- man, Mrs. A. Walfenzao. The dis- placed family was provided im- mediate assistance. Community spirit to assist others in need act- ed as a catalyst in turning thoughts into actions. Money, la- bor, knowledge and materials were directed toward providing a re- placement house. Two dozen organizations and in- dividuals made cash and material donations to the effort to provide a new dwelling for the family. Lago, the Aruba Construction Company and Elmar indicated their willingness to assist Mrs. Walfenzao's committee, and Nov. 18 construction of a new home was begun. Little more than three months later, Jan. 25, the house was completed and presented to Mrs. Jack by Mrs. Walfenzao. The house has four bedrooms, a bathroom, and a living room sep- arated from the kitchen by a four- foot room divider. The dwelling was designed by W. All construction mat- erials were donated by Lago, and the Aruba Construction Comp- any's fee for building the home was much less than its normal charge would be for like construc- tion. To protect this investment and to keep the tank farm operating smooth- ly and efficiently around the clock, some 200 men are required. This in- cludes tank operation, maintenance and repair, the pipelines leading to and from the tanks, the roads in the area and the pump house personnel who regulate the flow of crude and products both in and out of the great metal containers. The tanks themselves are of vary- ing sizes and geometric shapes, with each group of tanks designed for specific functions and products Crude and heavy products, such as fuel oil, are stored primarily in the cone-roof tanks which are paint- ed black to absorb the sun's rays. They can be easily recognized by an aluminum ring painted around the top. The lighter products, such as butane, are stored in football-shaped vessels. fuels are kept in aluminum colored and white cone-roof tanks The lightest product in the tank farm is propane, kept in horizontal cylinders, while the heaviest in fuel oil Numerous problems arise in the normal course of operating a tank farm and the responsibility for deal- ing with these situations is handled by the Process Department. The Mechanical Department per- forms maintenance and repairs Safety is of major concern in the tank farm, as it is throughout Lago. In the tank farm, though, as a result of leakage, an ever-present problem, combustible products can be exposed to sparks or static electricity. Of course, as a precaution, safety and fire-fighting features are built into the tanks. Aruba's corrosive atmosphere pre- sents the greatest hazard to the tanks and accounts for the extensive maintenance each tank requires. Whereas the spheroids were a con- stant source of maintenance head- aches, the floating roof, demetcoated tanks are a major improvement. The spheroids require maintenance about every five years, while the new tanks can go from six to eight or ten years with relatively little maintenance. Aside from the vast spheroid re- placement project, another major change that has occurred in the tank farm has been the improvements made in internal piping. These im- provements now permit better mix- ing and blending of the products. The contents of a tank are mixed by simultaneous pumping into and out of the tank on separate pipelines. The pumphouse handles this oper- ation. In today's highly competitive pet- roleum industry, costs and efficiency is included among the 1964 compe- titors as is runner-up St. Eustatius.
