Seventh NSC First Place Is Assured;

Total On-Job Injuries Also Decline
Lago affirmed its position as the safest refinery in the world Dec.
31, when it closed 1963 with a record breaking 0.27 frequency rate for
disabling injuries, registering but two mishaps in over eight million
manhours. The notable accomplishment all but assures the seventh
first place in National Safety council competition.


A new record for total on-the-job
injuries was also established during
the last twelve months. Along with
the first place citation, an additional
"outstanding performance honor
award" is likely to be presented
Lago.
Presently, Lago is eligible for its
seventeenth safety award of honor,
having gone over three million man-
hours since the last disabling injury
in July. The expected first place, the
seventh, and award of honor, number
seventeen, would provide Lago a to-
tal of twenty four such awards, plus
numerous other commendations since
it first joined the council in May,
1933.
The previous record-breaking year
was 1961 when three disabling in-
juries produced a frequency rate of
0.34. In 1962, Lago employees re-
duced the number of total on-the-job
injuries to a low of 368. In 1963, this
figure was reduced even further to a
record of 303.
Of the prior six first place per-
formances, four have been in the last
ten years, the accomplishments com-
ing in 1954, 1957, 1958 and 1961. The
first honor was attained in 1947-
1948 and Lago employees repeated

Twenty-Five Presented

Quarter Century Watches

At Ceremonies Jan. 3
For the third time since the in-
stitution of watch presentations to
employees having 25-years of Lago
service, a group of twenty-five reci-
pients were on hand along with
forty-five management members for
the January ceremonies, held in the
Administration Building.
On two other occasions, as many
as twenty-nine employees have been
awarded watches at one time. The
January presentations bring the to-
tal to 1368 since the program was
initiated.
Four departments were represent-
ed at the function, with Process hav-
ing the highest number present with
thirteen. Mechanical placed eight and
Marine and Comptrollers two each.

Process Football Team Successfully Defends

Title. Defeats GOB 3-1 In Snort Park Finals


The Process football team again is
champion of interdepartment competi-
tion. Members of the championship team
retained their title for the second
straight year with a 3-1 win over the
football players representing the Gen-
eral Office Building. Both teams went
into the final game undefeated in inter-
department competition at the Lago
Sport Park. The title game was the only
GOB defeat. Presentations for the Lago
competition and the island-wide top
class tournament were made by Corpo-
rate Secretary T. F. Hagerty. Competing
in the Lago play besides the finalists
were teams representing Crafts, Store-
house and Yard. Members of the Foot-
ball Steering Committee are J. Werle-
man, chairman, J. Briezen, M. Reyes, S.
R. Tromp and J. M. Kock.


Twenty amateur boxers participated
in the amateur boxing tournament con-
ducted at the Park by a Sport Park
Board steering committee of which
Mateo Reyes was chairman; Stanley
Smith, referee; F. L. Hodge, timekeeper;
Jose Kock, bellman, and Kenneth John-
stone, assistant. Twenty-one bouts were
staged, and when the swinging and the
flailing had been completed, Narry
Rodgers was accorded the honor of out-
standing boxer. The presentation of
prizes was made by Dr. G. G. Hendrick-
son, Medical Department director. It is
estimated that fight nights drew ap-
proximately 4000 people to the Sport
Park. Boxing apparently is joining vol-
ley ball as the most popular spectator
sport at the Lago Sport Park. Both
activities are always well attended.

On "Long Voyage" Home

When Started July 18
The yawl Kochat sat silhouetted
against the late afternoon sun, moor-
ed just behind the Bali restaurant in
Oranjestad, its shadowed rigging
giving the appearance of so many
charred stick matches. Around it,
the breakers rolled like bubbling cot-
ton.
On board, crewman Dick Pohe,
tanned by rays of numerous ocean
suns, performed the traditional sea-
man's bathing ritual: a pan of water
held above the head, a split second
of anticipation, then the curious bap-
tisim that it is said only sailors can
fully appreciate or understand.
The forty-foot Kochat is captained
by John Evans, a fifty-eight-year
old Englishman who, for several
years now, has been living in New
Zealand when he's not at sea Mr.
Pohe, a youthful 28-year-old New
Zealander, has been with Mr. Evans
since April, 1960.
Currently, the pair is heading for
home part in New Zealand. In 1957,
the last time the Kochat dropped
anchor in Aruba, it was also headed
home after an extended journey to
sea.
This trip began July 18, and they
have ventured to such ports of call
as England, Portugal, Spain, Gibral-
