Will Share Record Fund

Earnings for Past Year
Fund earnings of the Lago Thrift
Plan reached another all-time high
this year. The high return in earn-
ings plus the additional contribution
enbaled participants in the Thrift
Plan to receive an average sum
higher than any previous distribution.
The sum of Fls. 2,560,545 will be
shared proportionately by 3178 em-
ployee participants. The total is the
sum of the money Lago put into the
Thrift Plan as additional contribu-
tion, which is over and above reg-
ular contributions, and the money
earned through investment of Thrift
Plan funds.
From Oct. 1, 1962, to Sept. 30,
1963, interest on Thrift Plan funds
was earned at the rate of 3.90 per
cent. This amounted to Fls. 1,173,794,
and was shared proportionately by
all participants in the plan. The
fund earnings averaged an additional
FIs. 369 to each Thrift Plan member.
Fund earnings is only a portion of
the money that is in addition or ex-
tra to regular contributions. The
other portion is the amount Lago
contributes at the year's end, and is
identified as additional, which is
exactly what it is. The additional
contribution that was announced last
month is just that, additional it is
not related to the company's regular
Plan. This year, the company's addi-
tional contribution was Fls.1,387,251.
This sum plus the fund earnings is
the amount shared by participants.
Participants' savings in the Lago
Thrift Plan continue to increase. Em-
ployees contributed Fls. 2,513,327 to
the Plan during the past year. La-
go's regular contributions during the
same period were Fls. 758,071. These
totals are distinct and separate from
the fund earnings and additional
contribution.
The 3178 members of the Lago
Thrift Plan represent 100 per cent
participation. Ninety-four per cent,
or 2986 members participate at the
maximum ten per cent level
Fund earnings result from high
quality investments. These invest-
ments have increased the earnings
distribution to participants from
2.17 per cent to the present 3 90 per
cent in eight years. Thrift Plan in-
vestments include Netherlands An-
tilles Government bonds, Aruba Is-

The sixteenth consecutive Lago family calendar will be presented to
all employees next week. Twelve scenes which portray Aruba in all its
Caribbean beauty accompany the twelve months laid out in Gregorian
sequence. The full color pictures were taken by B. E. Ellis, Jr., of the

Three men sail their camels over a sea of sand.
A dazzling star hangs above a town huddled in
sleep. On the hillsides, sheep stir and the fires of
shepherds twinkle. A single light burns in the town.
No second guesses are needed to identify this
word-picture as the First Christmas. Yet when was
it, exactly?
Saint Matthew says Jesus was born when Herod
was King of Judea. Scholars have established that
Herod reigned from 37 B.C. until his death in 4 B.C.
Matthew also relates the story of Herod's plan to
kill the Infant King and remove any threat to the
pagan throne. Each year the story is repeated in
Sunday Schools throughout the Christian world:
how Herod sent the Three Wise Men in search of
the Child... how the Wise Men were warned in a
dream that Herod was up to no good .. how Mary
and Joseph received a similar warning and fled to
Egypt with their Child... how Herod tried des-
perately to eliminate Jesus by ordering the slaugh-
ter of all male children in and around Bethlehem.
In the words of Saint Matthew, Herod called for
the death of all boys "from two years old and under,
according to the time which he had diligently in-
quired of the Wise Men."
According to this passage, the Wise Men told
Herod they had first seen the Star of Bethlehem
two years before the tyrant had ordered the
"slaughter of the innocents." Herod died in 4 B.C.;
Jesus must have been born at least two years earlier.
Jesus was born B.C. Before the Christian Era -
because of calendar changes in the Sixth Century.
Many scholars believe they can get a better idea
of the time of Nativity by learning more about the
Star of Bethlehem and the Wise Men.
Today it is known that fundamental mathematical
laws govern the motion of the planets. Astronomers
are able to predict the appearances of comets, stars
and eclipses by applying complicated mathematical
time formulas. One of the most interesting specula-
tions on the origin of the Star of Bethlehem was in
1937 by the Rev. W. Burke Gaffney, S. J.
Star A Nova
Writing in the Journal of the Royal Astronomical
Society of Canada, Father Burke-Gaffney suggests
the Star might have been a nova. Novae are stars
which flare up suddenly and then fade after a few
months. Astronomers believe this is caused by
tremendous explosions, similar to the ones which
occur on the sun, itself a small star.
Astronomy was a budding science long before
Christ. Its center was in Babylonia, which is thought
to have been the home of the Wise Men. They were
known as "Magi," the old Babylonian word for the
scholarly, star-gazing priests of the Zoroatrian reli-
gion. These astrologers, by their beliefs, would see
mystical significance in such a phenomenon. They
thus felt compelled to follow the star wherever it
led.
The great German astronomer Johann Kepler,
who died in 1630, suggested that Christ had been
born in 7 B.C., during a conjunction of the planets
Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. This phenomenon would
have certainly interested the Magi. By calculating
the unchanging journeys of these three planets,
however, it has been learned that Mars, Jupiter and
Saturn could not have been bright enough to be
visible in 7 B.C. Seven B. C., however, is still re-
garded by many to have been the year of the birth.
Scholars substantiate this claim by again using
written records to obtain the terms of office of var-
ious Roman officials and the dates of major tax
collections of the period.
According to the Gospel of Saint Luke: "... there
went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all
the world should be taxed. (And this taxing was
first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)
And all went to be taxed, every one into his own
city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of
the city of Nazareth, into Judea, unto the city of
David, which is called Bethelhem; (because he was
of the house and lineage of David) to be taxed with
Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And
so it was that, while they were there, the days were


accomplished that she should be delivered."
The exact time of the taxation in this passage was
unknown for a long time. In 1923, however, near
Ankara, Turkey, there was found a Roman temple
inscription which told that in the reign of Caesar
Augustus there were three great tax collections.
One was in 28 B. C., the second in 8 B.C. and the
third in 14 A. D.
The taxation in 28 B. C. was much too early to
have been the one mentioned in the Scriptures as it
was too close to the accession of Augustus. The
taxation that took place in 14 A. D. was much too
late as it followed too long after the death of Herod.
(And it was Herod who ordered the slaughter of all
baby boys under two years of age in the hope of
destroying Jesus.) The only tax that fits the des-
cription is that of 8 B.C.
According to the Bible, Jesus was born during one
of the great census takings of the Roman Empire.
It is not unlikely that the census and taxation were
held at the same time since one could have served
as a check on the other.
7 B.C. Nativity
It is then conceivable that Jesus was born a year
later, about 7 B. C. Since Judea was on the frontier
of the Roman Empire, it would have taken a year
for the taxation decree to reach there. From Saint
Matthew's account, it is known that Jesus was at
least two years old at the time of Herod's death in
4 B. C. Allowing a year for the Roman decree to
reach Judea, and subtracting at least two years
from 4 B. C., scholars place the Nativity at 7 B. C.
This date also coincides with the date of the planets'
conjunction.
As for the time of the year of the Birth, many
believe the Bible supplies all the answer needed.
Saint Luke says in his description of the Holy
Night, "And there were in the same country sheph-
erds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their
flock by night."
Since earliest days, it is only in the spring when
lambs are born that the shepherds of Judea watch
their flocks at night. December is the rain season in
the Holy Land, and shepherds are not likely to be
out.
If Jesus was born in the spring, why do the major
Christian religions celebrate his birth in the winter?
Centuries before Jesus, the last week of December
had been the time of festivals. It is also the time of
the winter solstice, when the sun stands farthest
south in the sky. The old Julian Calendar dated this
point Dec. 25. Present day calendar, the Gregorian,
marks it Dec. 22.
The boisterous Kalends celebrations of the Ro-
mans were held at this time. Since the early Chris-
tians were forbidden to worship in Rome, they used
the Kalends as a disguise for their own solemn rites.
The Kalends customs of gift giving and decorating
doorways with evergreens were incorporated by the
Christians, and Christmas, as we know it, was born.
The calendar date of Christ's birth is less impor-
tan than the fact that He was born.. While it is
fascinating to probe the past and ask who the Wise
Men were, and what was the star they followed, it is
not the star, but the scene it illuminated that has
captured men's hearts.

Trees to Island Groups
Every Christmas a representative of Lago's Public Relations Depart-
ment has what is probably his most pleasant task of the year. He de-
livers Christmas trees to churches and island organizations. The num-
ber of trees delivered usually is around 185.
To fully appreciate the pleasantness of the assignment, the number
of trees delivered must be multiplied by the number of people associat-
ed with each church and organization who will derive pleasure from
the trees. The answer is indeterminable, of course, but the propo-
sition suggests the amount of satisfaction that comes to Severiano
Luydens as he delivers each tree and hears many words of apprecia-
tion.
Lago has donated trees for many years. It's an effort or expression
of the season in which Lago places a symbol of Christmas tide tt the
disposal of all of the island's churches and the majority of social or-
ganizations. In a way, the donation of Christmas trees lends joy to the
season and to a large segment of the community.
Lago orders about 1700 Christmas trees. With the exception of those i
that are donated, the trees are imported for employee purchase. The
trees are grown in New Brunswick, Canada, and a balsam variety is
selected because of its ability to withstand the rigors of a sea voyage
and loading and unloading.
The trees had a fairly safe journey to Aruba last year because of
a need for railroad cars in Trinidad. Two open cars, enroute to the
Caribbean island, were shipped on the same vessel with Lago's Christ-
mas trees. The trees were placed in the railroad cars, watered and '- k- *.

American Legion with the annual Christmas basket
donation. Assisting the 1962 effort were Francis Berg-
field, George Cvejanovich and Tim Bagwell.


Legion Distributes
The Aruba Esso Post No. 1 of the American
Legion made its annual distribution of Christmas
baskets last year, as pictured above. It will do so
again this year for the twenty-sixth consecutive
time. Last year, the men of the Legion were assist-
ed by Seroe Colorado Cub Scouts. The baskets were
piled aboard a truck and distributed in the hope
that each basket would carry an amount of Christ-
mas joy. The distribution of Christmas baskets is
one of the many ways the American Legion assists
community efforts. The money for community pro-
jects is raised through the Legion's annual car lot-
tery and other fund raising means. The Cub Scouts
assisted last year for the first time.

B. K. Chand of the Mechanical
Department and Edith Bobb of the
Medical Department have left Lago
for future retirement Mr. Chand
ended active employment the first of
December, and Mrs Bobb Dec. 18.


B. K. Chand E. Bobb


STwenty-five of Mr. Chand's twen-
ty-six years of employ, were in the
Mechanical Department. He came to
Lago in 1937 from British Guiana,
and was employed as an apprentice
sales clerk B in the Commissary. A
year later, Mr. Chand transferred to
the Mechanical Administration Of-
fice. Following three promotions,
which brought him to the level of
junior clerk II, he transferred to the
Storehouse in October, 1941. Succes-
sive promotions made him assistant
section head and section head. Mr.
Chand became an assistant group
head, Surplus Control, in April, 1957,
the position he held at the time he
left Lago.
Mr. Chand was widely known for
his representation activities. He was


i active in employee representation for
over twenty years during which
time he served on the Employee Ad-
visory Committee, the Lago Em-
ployee Council and the Independent
Oil Workers Union of Aruba.
Mrs. Bobb had over sixteen years
of service in the Medical Depart-

Buys Tidewater Facilities

In Western United States
The Humble Oil and Refining
Company, a subsidiary of the Stand-
ard Oil Company (New Jersey),
bought facilities of the Tidewater Oil
Company at a cost of $329,000,000.
The transaction is, financially, the
largest single acquisition made by a
Jersey company.
Purchased was a refinery in Avon,
California, which can process 135,000
barrels a day, five supertankers, and
about 3900 service stations in Cali-
fornia, Washington, Oregon, Idaho,
Nevada, Arizona and Hawaii. Hum-
ble operates about 800 service sta-
tions in this same area with the ex-
ception of Hawaii where it did not
have marketing operations.
Previously, Humble did not have
refining capacity on the West Coast
of the United States. Humble's
marketing operations were covered
by refineries of other companies,
which made products to Humble's
specifications.
Although the supertankers were
not identified in the announcement
of the purchase by Jersey, it was
stated that all were more than
45,000 dead weight tons.
The West Coast sale marked the
second acquisition of Tidewater pro-
perty by Jersey Standard this year.
Earlier, a Jersey Standard affiliate
purchased Tidewater's refinery in
Denmark for a reported $21,500,000.
