Thirty-Year Employees
V. Lampe and P. Bislip
Honored at Award Meeting
Vicente Lampe of Mechanical-
Welding and Pedrito Bislip of Mech-
amcal-Yald were honored for their
thirty years of service at special
award ceremonies Nov. 13
The two long service employees
were introduced by Vice President
F. C. Donovan as men, both under
age fifty, who started at Lago in
1933. Mechanical Manager J. R. Pro-
terra told the guests gathered for
the special ceremonies that Mr
Lampe is an active community work-
er and has been for thirty years. One
of Mr. Lampe's main community in-
terests is the Estrella Club in Santa,
Cruz. He is a member of the club's
board He is also active in the pres-
ent Santa Cruz community project
to build a kindergarten Mr. Lampe
has worked with many other youth
groups, Mi. Proterra reported.
Mr. Lampe is a welder A in Mech-
anical-Welding. He was transferred
to Mechanical-Welding n June, 1934,
from the Technical Department His
service with Lago began in January,
1933, as a laboiet. He later moved
to the Technical Department as a
rodman From March, 1947, through
July. 1948. Mr. Lampe was employed
by the Creole Petroleum Cot po action
in Venezuela.
Mr Pioterra explained that Mr
Bislip's first assignment in 1933 was
unloading sulphur at the Gasoline
Dock This, the Mechanical manager
explained, was an extremely arduous
task. It was also noted that thi ty
years ago, the sulphur unloading
crews were sent home if the sulphur
ship was late. Mr. Bislip transferred
to the Storehouse shortly after his
sulphur endeavors and has remained
in the Storehouse.
It was pointed out that Mrt Bis-
lip's home was moved recently It
occupied an area right in the middle
of the present chemical and ferti-
lizer complex. The thirty-year em-
ployee enjoys fishing and finds equal
enjoyment in farming. The recent
rains enabled Mr Bislip, and many
others, to plant peas and peanuts.
Both men expressed appreciation
for the opportunity Lago has given
them the past thirty years. Mr. Bis-
lip said that his relationship with
workers and supervisors has always
been cordial. Neither man has had a
lost time injury. Both are forty-nine.

Issue Will Be Dec. 18
The next issue of the Aruba
Esso News will be the Christmas
issue. Since the regular bi-weekly
publishing date would be Dec. 14,
and quite a few days before
Christmas, it has been decided to
extend the date of publication to
Wednesday, Dec. 18. The date
places the Christmas issue a little
closer to Christmas.

Lago Employees Will Be Held at GQ 8
Five hundred Lago employees will have the opportunity to buy used
company furniture this afternoon and tomorrow. The furniture sale
will be held at Guest Quarters 8 from 1 to 4 p.m., Nov. 30, and from 7
a.m. to 4 p.m., Dec. 1. The eligible shoppers were the first 500 drawn
from 1935 applications submitted by Lago employees.


MATEO REYES of Mechanical-Electrical and chairman of the Lago
Sport Park Board, was selected to conduct the chance drawing for Lago
furniture purchase options. Community Service personnel registered the
order in which Mr. Reyes drew the names. The sale will be held at the
front, or south side, of Guest Quarters 8 Nov. 30 and Dec. 1.

The sales area will be the front,
or south side, of Guest Quarters 8,
the large green dormitory located
west of the Esso servicenter. To ease
congestion and lessen confusion,
Community Service personnel have
established procedures which will
aid everyone.
1) Park vehicles in the area for-
merly occupied by the Dining Hall.
Vehicles will not be allowed to park
in tront of Guest Quarters 8, the
space just isn't available. When the
purchase has been completed, ve-
nicles will be allowed to move up to
the sales area to remove selected
furniture.
2) Only eligible Lago employees
will be allowed in the sales area.
Family members will not be admit-
ted. The eligible employee must have
his ficha as this will be the badge of
entrance. Possession of the notifica-
tion slip would be helpful but is not
necessary, so if it has been lost do
not worry. The employee's badge and
payroll number will be checked off
against a master list by an atten-
dant at the entrance to the sales
area.
3) No one will be allowed to roam
the sales area unattended. A sales
clerk will assist each eligible em-
ployee admitted to the sales area.
4) Each selection will be tagged
immediately with the buyer's payroll

even by one guilder. No allowances
will be made. The purchase of more
than one specific item will be allow-
ed in some cases, but most will be
sold on a one to a customer basis. In

Assignment In People
The off-the-job safety and public relations film truck is an assign-
ment in people. Nothing else is concerned. The truck and the programs
it makes possible are efforts by Lago to take itself directly into the
community, there to suggest aids in personal safety and to create
understanding of Lago developments. Entertainment is provided in the
variety of films shown.
Only people are involved, the projectionist and speaker on the truck
and the hundreds of community folk who sit on the ground, boxes,
chairs, the backs of trucks to hear the messages and watch the films.
The messages concern only subjects that primarily affect the emotions,
the feelings, the desires of the listeners.
For happier living, safe living is suggested. The means of accom-
plishing this are outlined in terms of the kitchen, the house, the back-
yard, the playground, the roads. The messages concern little things,
which unknowingly exist as safety hazards. To remove one hazard in
the home and save one child the pain of injury is to reap the reward
the film truck and its speakers seek.
When Lago developments are sometimes misunderstood, public rel-
ations presentations by Severiano Luydens aim to place subjects in
true and understanding form. Again, it is the people who are the main
consideration. Messages and answers to questions attempt to lessen
anxieties created by the absence of explanation, examination and
understanding.
The film truck program is indeed an assignment in people, and, by
the way, is one of Lago's continuing efforts to be a citizen who con-
tributes to the well being of the community.

service, it's apparent that each has had a long and fruitful career as a
company employee. The eight employees retiring the first of next

SMr. Tucker has over twenty-seven
yeais in the Comptiollei's Depart-

1936, was as a comptometer oper-
ator. He advanced through payroll
categories and became paymaster in
'September, 1943. He was promoted
to senioI accountant in April, 1956,
and division head, Payroll and Thrift,

xt Off-Job Safety And Public Relations Film Truck Begins New Journey


The off-the-job safety and pub-
lic relations film truck is off on
an extensive journey to bring saf-
ety and understanding to a large
share of Aruba's population. The
truck and its operators are well
suited to meet the task. First of
all, the truck is equipped with
portable electric generating facili-
ties, which means programs can
be offered at any locality on the
island. All that is needed is a clear
area where hundreds of people
may congregate to hear the mes-
sages and view the films.
The messages are presented
over a public address system, part
of the truck's portable equipment.
by members of Lago's speaker's
bureau. They are well qualified to
speak about safety off the job,
and their messages suggest means
through which everyday life can
be happier by being safer.
Projectionist is Severiano Luy-
dens of the Public Relations De-
partment, who also delivers safety
messages and answers questions
and discusses interpretations of
Lago developments.
The film truck's first two visits
were at Cadushi Largo and Ayo.
F. V. Christiaans and B R Arends
were the first two speakers. Each
program was attended by well
over 400 people, who listened to
suggested ways to insure a safe
and happy Christmas.
Other visits will be made in the
vicinities of Bubali-Tanki Flip,
West Punt. Calabas, Sabana Libre,
Paradera, Meiveld, Picaron, Rooi
Kochi and Seroe Blanco.

Lago and Aruba Thoroughly Soaked by Week Long Rainfall;

Over Three Inches Fell During Heavy Downpours Nov. 12

And it rained, and it rained, and it rained. It was
not a series of intermittent showers, nor was it a
deluge for five minutes that ended in bright sun-
shine with a brilliant rainbow bent across the north-
east sky. It was, instead, an unaccustomed and
lengthy downpour that descended on Aruba from
overcast, leaden skies. The main drenching was
preceded by nocturnal showers. Then Tuesday, Nov.
12, the water broke loose from its grey, overhead
carriers. It seemed to start near the middle of the
island; at least Oranjestad was soundly drenched
before San Nicolas felt a sprinkle. An hour later,
however, the island was covered with a blanket of
water.
Streets soon were awash with water racing to low
areas. Some avenues were blocked by pools of water
that could not drain, and steadily increased in size
as the rain continued to fall. Arroyos filled quickly
and volumes of water cascaded over once dry beds.
Rivulets drew crazy patterns, seemingly unable to
hold course over rain-drenched ground. In early
evening of the first day of the torrential downpour,
the rain subsided. Wet ground throughout the cu-
nucu felt the sharp edge of the farmer's hoe strip-
ping away the surface to plant peas and peanuts.
The seeds were sown in time. Later that night and
the next day and the next, it rained some more. The
soil was wet well. There remains much moisture in
the ground which should aid the beginnings of a
bountiful harvest.
Lago and environs were thoroughly drenched.
There were those who earlier in the week had look-
ed at dismal skies hoping for a little rain, but were
completely unprepared for the actual occurrence -
in continuing form. It went from wet to wetter,
from cold to colder. The Technical Department Lab-
oratories reported a rainfall of three inches from 8
a.m. Tuesday to 8 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12 and 13.
Almost an inch fell during the next twenty-four-
hour period followed by nearly one-half inch for the
next like period. Rainfall for the entire week was
4.6 inches. The three days of rain amounted to
nearly four and one-half inches.
The effects of volumes of water on Lago terrain
are usually interesting. The lay of the land in the
concession, like that of the rest of this sunny and
dry island, seems as unable as it is unaccustomed
to face the task of absorbing more than a little
rainfall. Parking lots, hollows and low areas behind
fire walls soon were inundated. Lago had the dis-
tinction, although briefly, of having an impressive
waterfall. In the tank farm area south of the
spheres, water tumbled over a wall in steady fash-
ion. The falls fed a little stream at the base of the
wall that rushed to seek its level, there to drain,
probably into the sea.
Although Aruba has not received another inces-
sant downpour comparable to the Nov. 12 deluge,
there continue to be pleasant rains. The fields have
responded well, as they always do. What was once
parched and barren, is now moist and verdant.
Aruba flora springs to life immediately with a little
watery assist.

Have trouble threading a needle? Try "threading" a fifty-five-ton
tower sometime. Lago's Mechanical riggers do it all the time, not al-
ways the same weight, though. Some towers are lighter, others heavier.
The most recent "threading" assignment was the T-9 tower at NFAR,
which happened to weigh fifty-five tons.

Willing Hands Volunteer To Construct

Centennial Kindergarten in Santa Cruz
What better way to celebrate a church centennial than to build a
memorial, so thought the parishioners of Our Lady of the Immaculate
Conception Church many months ago when they discussed various
ways to commemorate the anniversary.
The community of Santa Cruz became a parish 100 years ago under
the spiritual guidance of Rev. Hendrik de Vries. The church used in
1863, which no longer exists, was built by the faithful. Members of
Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church thought it a propi-
tious venture to again build. This time, not a church, but a kinder-
garten for the church's preschool children.
In deciding on a centennial celebration and memorial, a committee,
headed by C. Angela of Lago's Comptroller's Department. found that
the school building would cost in excess of Fls. 120,000. After a six-
month fund raising campaign, Fls. 45,000 was contributed by the
community. At this point, the men of Santa Cruz decided to wait no
longer. They would build the school themselves, and save the cost of
the contractor.
Everyone pitched in and agreed that this was the solution. Ground
was broken for the new school Oct. 12. On hand were many Lago em-
ployees ready to volunteer their labors and skills, government workers,
tradesmen and businessmen and some very young men, who could only
offer enthusiasm and willingness to accept small chores. But it was
their intent to help, as it was that of the wives, daughters and sisters,
who provided the men with refreshments.
The school is progressing rapidly. The celebration date has been set
for Dec. 8, 1963. Just how much of the school will be completed then '
is questionable. Rev. J. Berlage, parish priest, and the volunteer wor-
kers are striving to complete at least one room so that the school may
be opened in the year of the centennial. To accomplish this the volun-
teer workers work on weekends and the few daylight hours left to
them after returning home from their places of employ. Such a sched-
ule makes a long day for the volunteers, but the goal is in sight.
